No fine for radio station ad breach
Southern Highland News - Bowral,NSW,Australia
NO penalties will be given to Highland FM after the community radio station
was found in breach of one of its licence conditions.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that on April
18 and June 20 this year, during a broadcast of The Highland Living Show,
and on February 9 this year, during a broadcast of What's On in the
Highlands, 2WKT Bowral (Highland FM) broadcast advertisements.
The major difference between community radio and commercial radio is that
community stations cannot broadcast advertisements but instead get their
funding from sponsors.
Under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, sponsorship announcements on
community radio that do not include appropriate acknowledgements of
financial support (tags) are considered to be advertisements.
Highland FM station manager Graham Moir said ACMA had merely got them on a
technicality.
"In regards to the untagged sponsorship announcement, all the guy did was to
forget to mention the word sponsor," he said.
"Everyone knew this particular business had been a sponsor of the station
for years, and with all the other things that go on in the studio, cueing
the song, interviewing someone, checking the levels, he neglected to add the
word sponsor."

How to win a Sony Radio Award
By MH
Community Radio stations are invited to a seminar entitled How to Win a
Sony Radio Academy Award, to be held in Bristol on December 2nd.
"Community radio has well and truly got its feet 'under the table' of the
radio industry but the results of the recent Sony Radio Academy Awards did
not reflect the achievements of the Community radio sector" states Joanne
Schofield of BCfm who is organising the event at the Mercure Holland Hotel
in Bristol on December 2nd 2008 at 2pm.
Representatives from Community Radio and other interested organisations
will get the opportunity to hear Tim Blackmore, Chairman of the Sony Radio
Academy Awards, present on the Awards and respond to questions from the
community radio sector.
After the seminar attendees will be able to network with other community
radio colleagues, to share experiences.
The event is sponsored by broadcast software company ENCO. The Enco team,
along with Tim Blackmore and representatives from the Community Media
Association will be on hand following the presentation to answer questions
on the Awards and Community Radio in general.
"There will be a great deal of radio expertise in the room on the day"
continues Joanne "I would urge community stations to take advantage of
these few valuable hours to learn more about the Sony Radio Academy Awards
and also meet people that will be able to give you important industry
hints and tips. We know that community budgets are tight and that is where
ENCO have stepped in to sponsor this event and we would like to thank them
for their support."
The seminar will be free for pre-registered attendees and parking is
available on the day at the hotel. For more information about the event
and to reserve your place, call Joanne Schofield on 0560 1126659 or email:
joanne@bcfm.org.uk but places are limited and will be allocated on a first
come, first served basis.

Radio station receives emergency alert system
By Jake Palmateer
Staff Writer
ONEONTA _ Emergency officials and local leaders in Oneonta now have the
ability to speak directly to the public during a natural disaster or other
crisis.
WUOW 104.7, the community radio station operated under the auspices of the
State University College at Oneonta, has launched an enhanced emergency
alert system.
Mayor John Nader issued a test message live on the airwaves at about 3:45
p.m. Tuesday during a media conference with public safety, hospital and
college officials.
The new telephone interface allows emergency officials and local leaders
to access the airwaves through any telephone, including cell phones.
"One of the biggest problems is getting the word out in any emergency,"
said Gary Wickham, WUOW's program director.
The interface allows officials to enter an access code on their telephone
to record a message that is immediately and automatically broadcast over
the airwaves. A second access code allows officials to speak live on the
air from their telephones.
