Native Arts Association Strives for Satellite Radio

Indianapolis, IN December 22, 2009. The Woodlands Tribal Artists
Association Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote a
renaissance in eastern woodland Indian art and crafts. This is strived for
by means of arts education, trade show and public exhibition
opportunities, and archival support services. A major tool that the
association hopes to use in fulfilling its mission is to deploy and
maintain a Native-interest satellite radio station.

Association Chairman Duane Prescott (Ho Chunk) noted: "We believe that
there is a large number of artists, traders, dancers, singers, and
non-native enthusiasts traveling across the country at any time who would
be very interested in Native American programming if it was an option
available to them. We hope to convince Sirius XM that a station with
cultural, educational, and current event programming would bring them a
healthy number of subscribers and listeners."

Board Member Jim Beuoy added: "Our immediate challenge is to gather
sufficient statistics for our continued meetings with Sirius XM.
Obviously, they cannot give a channel to everyone who requests one. We
need to present the programming decision makers with facts about potential
subscription growth that would result from this valuable and underserved
programming. Consequently, we people interested in hearing Native music,
interviews, and news to complete our on-line survey. It's free to the
respondent and set up in a way that only one response can come from each
computer address. " That site is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KXCYY3T.

Board Member Ross Davis Ph.D. (Workforce Development Coordinator,
Northwoods NiiJii Enterprise Community Inc.) also noted: "Mass media is
unquestionably a powerful agent of socialization—there's a passion
underneath the surface in Indian country, anxious to arise—a passion to
share stories—of culture, history, entertainment, humor, you name it--to
communicate across generations, whether elder, youth, or even the Seventh
generation. Satellite radio is a vehicle to carry forth such passion. We
know that this isn't going to be easy, but we have great advisors and
counsel and are starting to pique the interest of a number of key people
and groups in Indian country. We can get the ball rolling with the help of
everyone taking the opportunity to email the survey link to everyone they
know, so that we can grow this grassroots initiative exponentially. It
would be to our and everybody's advantage if everyone were able to
complete the survey soon. There's no question that the time has come for
Native satellite radio. Please fill out the survey while you're thinking
about it!"

Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad today said community radio would be
introduced forthwith at the country's south part, considered as most
vulnerable to natural calamities.

He described the region as mush exposed to disaster in comparison to
others and said post-disaster response could be prompted in the region
with successful introduction of the community radio.

The minister was inaugurating at a daylong workshop on 'Experience sharing
on climate Change, Natural Disaster and Response Mechanism' in the Senate
Hall of Dhaka University (DU) here. United Development Initiatives for
Programmed Actions (UDDIPAN), an NGO, and Centre for Disaster and
Vulnerability Studies (CDVS), a newly introduced centre of the DU to
provide post-graduate degrees on climate change, have jointly organized
the workshop.

Prof of the CDVS Dr Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain in the chair chaired. Vice
Chancellor of the university Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique spoke as special
guest while adviser of Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP)
Dr SM Morshed moderating. UDDIPON executive director M Emranul Huq
Chowdhury, deputy country director of save The Children, Sweden-Denmark
Shamsul Alam Bakul, professors of different departments of the DU, climate
experts, scholars, dignitaries and representatives from NGOs and
development partners joined the workshop.

The Information minister said the disaster issue got priority at the
present context, but it is unfortunate that Bangladesh has no adequate
preparation to face any large scale earthquake.

Besides, he said, it is not possible to reach densely populated urban
areas with fire fighting equipments if any earthquake occurs. He slammed
developed countries for pushing developing countries including Bangladesh
towards juggernaut of climate change saying that at around two crore
people might be climate refugees if sea level rises to one meter caused by
the perilous impact of climate change.

Azad put emphasis on increasing coordination among experts, NGOs and
government agencies for tackling the climate change in a coordinated
manner. Prof AAMS Arefin said information of the coastal people must be
shared among the new generation so that they can mitigate the challenge by
utilizing their knowledge and expertise.

M Emranul Huq favoured keeping the climate change issue out of politics
and therefore coordination could play a significant role in addressing
the challenge efficiently. Each educational institutions ranging from
primary school to university level should have compulsory climate change
knowledge, said Prof Dr Khondoker Mokaddem.

[creative-radio] CKUT Radio | India: 'Operation Green Hunt'

* CKUT Radio | India: 'Operation Green Hunt'
interview with activist and academic Radha D'Souza by Stefan Christoff

http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/program/37821

Radha D'Souza speaks on contemporary political realities in India, focusing on
Operation Green Hunt, a major military operation launched by the Indian
government involving over 100 000 military personal. U.S. President Barack
Obama welcomed Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for an official state visit
in Washington while a massive deployment of Indian military forces launched
attacks on Maoist rebels in India's east, a campaign strongly critiqued by
social justice activists in India and globally.

In this interview Radha D'Souza argues that Operation Green Hunt is a
distraction from critically important issues facing Indian society today, such
as the sever economic inequality that continues to shape Indian society, while
corporations are granted increasing rights via 'special economic zones' which
afford corporate rights but have created displacement for impoverished
communities in India.

Beyond the contemporary political situation Radha D'Souza critically examines
Indian history, offering a historical critique on India's Congress party, often
linked to India's independent struggle against British colonialism and
currently in power.

* Radha D'Souza is an activist, lawyer and academic currently teaching at
University of Westminster in London.

* Stefan Christoff is a journalist and social justice activist based in
Montreal http://twitter.com/spirodon

Re: [creative-radio] Hit with new penalty, silenced Peruvian radio vows to resume broadcasts

If they have in fact advocated acts of violence to achieve their ends then most of the world will not be in sympathy. Peaceful resolution needs peaceful means. Violence is not a tool of the peaceful... or has no one noticed that violent acts are the ones penalized, whether individuals or tyrannous states.

A court has frozen the bank account of the station manager who is planning
to return "The Voice" of Bagua (La Voz) to the air on Jan. 4, the CNR
radio network reports.

Federal regulators cancelled the station's license last June for being out
of administrative compliance, and officials accused The Voice of inciting
deadly riots in Bagua, Amazonas in northern Peru. But station
representatives argued in November before the Inter American Court of
Human Rights that The Voice's closing was politically motivated, and not
because of administrative reasons.

The Communications ministry recently blocked the savings account of
station manager Carlos Flores Borja, who had received a loan from the
National Journalists Association of Peru to buy two hours of daily space
on another radio station. Flores says the blockage of the account will not
keep the station from strating its two-hour daily news program next week
on Radio Ariana Mix 95.5 FM, CNR says.

[creative-radio] The Official Call to The Caravan Festival 2010 in Memory of the Dead Victims of Fortress Europe]

Germany: The Official Call to The Caravan Festival 2010 in Memory of the
Dead Victims of Fortress Europe

Call for Support!
Join us and help to distribute this call for participation and support to
organize from your towns and cities for the festival!

The Caravan Festival 2010
For the rights of refugees and migrants in Europe (Juni 4th – 6th, 2010 in
Jena - Germany)

Unite against colonial injustice in memory of the dead victims of Fortress
Europe

Open Air Festival against Neo-colonialism and Racism

A place without racism, sexism and discrimination where everyone cares for
each other!
A bastion of humanity and solidarity!

The VOICE Refugee Forum on behalf of the Caravan-for the rights of
refugees and migrants calls for presentations and performances of
socio-cultural and political arts of resistance that explores the
background and complexities of the lives and political struggles of
refugees and migrants in Germany.

Together with anti-racist and socio-cultural and political activists,
these events will feature discussions and exchange of experiences that
includes poetry, street theatre, live music concerts, traditional African
drums and dance, masquerades and gyration, songs and tributes to the
victims of Fortress Europe.

It will also feature films, arts and photo exhibition and a host of other
activities that will suit the expected range of wide participants from
across Europe, Africa and beyond. Further concrete ideas and proposals are
welcome and will be duly updated.

The highlight of this event will be the "Masquerade Parades"- a
traditional form of expression with subtle and latent meanings in Africa.
This will be supported by other arts and cultural performances with
initiatives from different refugee-migrant communities that reflect our
diversity and the breadth of our socio-cultural and political engagement.

The masquerades will come from our diverse lands with our history and the
dignity of our ancestors. They will tell our stories in our own words and
will ask questions of the colonizers to help us re-assert and reclaim the
essentials of our humanity -solidarity, compassion and human dignity.

With the masquerade parade we want to build a Memorial in the middle of
Europe for the death of thousands of refugees and migrants at the
increasingly deadly and lethal borders of the European Union. With it we
want to reaffirm our commitment to our fight for our right to freedom of
movement, social justice and global solidarity.

Africa is not far from us - Masquerade and Fortress Europe

African Masquerades are revered divine cultural arts and performances
during special traditional festivals in many parts of Africa. They are
celebrated and represent a means of communal self-reflection, protection
and solidarity especially during disasters or mass misfortune.

Traditionally, masks represent symbols of deity and dead persons whose
faces cannot be physically seen or touched but imbued with the ability to
speak and communicate with members of their community on issues of
important bearings.

The Masquerades can and will tell the stories of those, whose stories may
never be told -those burnt alive under mysterious circumstances in police
custody, those shot and killed by the police in various European
countries, those whose lives are meant to be wasted in the inhuman refugee
and asylum camps all over Europe, those forced to be drowned by the
security forces of European countries, those persecuted and criminalized
by the racist police, those suffocated in the process of deportation and
lots more.

We will not allow any of the memories of these victims to be "mere
numbers" and forgotten without a trace. They are the victims and final
recipients of the consequences of national and international injustice in
Germany (Link) and the wider European Union. We will tell their stories
for their stories are our stories and they remain our heritage.

Memorial Landmark

While recollecting the extreme conditions that precipitated our flight
from our home countries, we will be remembering the horrors of these
victims amidst the fear of certainty that more will die. In their honour
therefore, we will unveil a "monument of human dignity" during the
festival in Jena for all victims of the Frontex border regime and the
barbaric policies of Fortress Europe. This monument will represent what
these victims were denied by the heartless European powers even at death.

For the Rights of Refugees and Migrants in Europe!

The goal of the festival is to remind us of all the victims of Fortress
Europe:
- Also the problems of countries outside Africa and the victims of war
must not be forgotten;
- European participants should show at the festival that they recognize
Europe's responsibility for colonial injustice and to fight against the
injustice - We are here because you destroy our countries!

Preliminary Format

The festival is open to all activists and artists of all nationalities and
communities to express themselves through their arts of resistance with
cooperation and creativity.

The format aims to reclaim the city of Jena as a whole with the festival
events. Thus, there will be four "Blocks" in different parts of the city
where events on different issues/topics will be presented /staged, and one
open square for the central events.

The festival is meant to be a political festival of arts and performances
exhibiting different forms of resistance with international participants
to be coordinated by The VOICE Refugee Forum and activists of the
Caravan-for the rights of refugees and migrants in Germany.

Further……

We want to increase public awareness of the enduring colonial injustice
through this festival and improve our cooperation with various segments of
the society through creative arts of resistance in various forms.
We are committed to the collective practice of building and maintaining a
group/network that appreciate and probably share the history of our
political struggles in a creative process.

We therefore invite and welcome supporters from diverse disciplines,
background and orientations who can bring fresh approaches and ideas to
invigorate our arts of resistance.

There will be special events of children initiatives including Acrobatic
displays and Circus actions with Percussion Jam Session and more!

Volunteers are urgently needed

We are looking for volunteers with particular attention to Artists such as
painters, sculptors, play writers, theatre performers and media activists,
musicians, actors, art critics, in addition to individuals and activists
from political and cultural groups and social networks who have interest
in being a part of the preparatory activities and mobilization to the
festival.

The final selection of materials and actions will depend on the
preparatory group and meetings in cooperation with the nationwide caravan.

Preparation meeting

Preparations are already on track in Jena, Thüringen-wide and
groups/activists from Hamburg, Bremen, Frankfurt, Hanau, Freiburg, Berlin
and Wuppertal are already involved.

2010.

[creative-radio] Free speech activist Liu Xiaobo's eleven-year jail sentence court sneakily issued verdict Dec 24th

RT @RSF_RWB: China - Free speech activist Liu Xiaobo's eleven-year jail
sentence court sneakily issued verdict Dec 25th
http://bit.ly/8U1nxG

[excerpt]

Eleven-year jail sentence for free speech activist Liu Xiaobo, court
sneakily issues verdict on Christmas Day

"It is a disgrace that Liu Xiaobo is going to spend the next eleven years
in prison when all he did was defend free expression and participate in a
debate about his country's future with many other Chinese intellectuals,"
Reporters Without Borders said. "It is also disgraceful that such a
sentence was announced on Christmas Day."

The press freedom organisation added: "Where are the universal values of
freedom of expression that China is supposed to represent in Shanghai in
2010? The national and international pressure for this famous dissident's
release must be redoubled. The international community must not be
manipulated by the Chinese authorities, who are trying to minimise
reaction by concluding this case during the end-of-year holidays."

[...]

A former University of Beijing philosophy professor and winner of the
Reporters Without Borders press freedom prize in 2004, Liu is committed to
the idea that the Chinese media will one day be able to operate as a real
fourth estate and stand up to the omnipotent Communist Party. [...]
