Throughout the past year in Montreal multiple artists have come together
for Artists Against Apartheid, an ongoing concert series uniting artists
in solidarity with the growing international movement against Israeli
apartheid.

CKUT radio presents a special radio broadcast featuring live performances
recorded at the Artists Against Apartheid concert series throughout this
past year, recordings that are being broadcast for the first time live on
CKUT community radio in Montreal.

Broadcast will feature performances from groundbreaking artists from
different front-lines within Montreal's internationally celebrated music
scene; featuring live performances from the celebrated hip-hop ensemble
Nomadic Massive, jazz saxophonist Matana Roberts, cellist Rebecca Foon
from Silver Mt. Zion, composer Antoine Bustros, hip-hop artist Vox Sambou,
the Kalmunity Vibe Collective, Balkan musician Lubo Alexandrov, poet Kaie
Kellough and others...

As a cultural initiative Artists Against Apartheid occurs as Israel's
military occupation over the Gaza Strip and West Bank intensifies, in
violation of international law and multiple U.N. resolutions. Palestinian
citizens face an entrenched system of racial discrimination and
segregation, resembling the defeated apartheid system in South Africa. A
matrix of Israeli-only roads, electrified fences, and over 500 military
checkpoints and roadblocks erase freedom of movement.

In response to apartheid policies imposed on the Palestinian people by
Israel multiple artists are coming together in Montreal through the
ongoing Artists Against Apartheid concert series, presenting a cultural
force in solidarity with the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom.

This radio broadcast is presented on CKUT radio within Tadamon!'s ongoing
political campaigns operating in Canada, including the campaign for
boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid state and the
campaign to challenge the listing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization
by the Canadian government.

19.1 The freedom of all types of mass media and flow of information will
be ensured. Initiatives will be taken for community radio services,
besides national radio network.

19.2 Investigation and trial of assassination of all journalists will be
made expeditiously and the real criminals will be given exemplary
punishment. Persecution and intimidation of journalists will be stopped.
All false cases against them will be withdrawn.

19.3 Discrimination in distribution of advertisements on partisan
consideration shall be discontinued, and development of the newspaper as
an industry will be aided.

Wouldn't it be great if you were walking down the street and your phone
rang? You know what would be even better? If, when you picked up the
phone, it wasn't a telemarketer or someone calling to ask you about your
expired car warranty, but two people genuinely interested in your day and
the stories you have to tell.

That's what Dial-A-Stranger tries to do–interject a little bit of art,
mystery and general excitement into your day. The hosts take questions
from listeners, and attempt to find answers to them by asking strangers
over the telephone. The results are compiled into a weekly podcast.
Mercedes Martinez and Zachary Kent started the show to highlight the
stories of everyday people and to be the excitement they wanted to see in
the world. In the process of producing the show they have talked to people
about a wide range of diverse subjects including tiki conventions, egg
donation, Disneyland and bounty hunting. This knowledge would make them
much more interesting at the dinner parties they still aren't invited to.

We invite you to take part in social change in the making. Over the past four years, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Iraqi-Kurdistan has ceased to be a practice protected by the silence of strict social taboo. FGM is now the topic of open public debate, with growing active support to ban it by law and combat against it through social, medical and educational action. This remarkable change has been made possible by a group of local activists, working across Iraqi-Kurdistan in WADI's various projects and initiatives for women's rights and equality. Not only have we exposed and began to document how wide-spread FGM is in our society, but we have also launched in 2006 a campaign to stop it. To hold to the successes achieved by this campaign so far, and to advance further, we need your support: any donation can make a difference.
 
 
Stopping FGM in Iraqi-Kurdistan: successes, hopes and challenges

Female genital mutilation is recognized in international conventions as a human rights violation and a severe form of violence against women. For several decades, international and local agencies and organizations have been campaigning against it in various countries of Africa, and more recently in Europe as well. But in Iraq, as in other countries of the Middle East, official documents of governments and United Nations agencies alike, still neglect this abuse.
In 2004, members of WADI'smobile teams – working to provide basic medical, social and educational support to women in the rural areas of Garmyan region – received first reports about FGM. They started to ask questions: interviewing a sample of nearly 1,500 women and young girls in various villages, the mobile teams discovered that 907 of them were victims of FGM. A study in the area of Erbil brought similar results: of 440 women interviewed, 380 were circumcised.
Following these troubling discoveries, the campaign Stop FGM in Kurdistan was launched in 2006, planned and carried out by Wadi's staff in Iraq in cooperation with other local women's groups and human rights organizations.  The Suleymiah-based Iraqi NGO WOLA – Woman Law Center  is now running this camapaign in co-operation with Wadi.
 
In the end of two short years since its beginning, the campaign can already report successes:
 
Documentation

In 2007 we began a data-collection research in all three Governorates of Iraqi-Kurdistan, interviewing more than 1,800 women. Analysis of the data has not been finalized yet, but preliminary findings show that FGM is indeed widespread across the region – ranging from 60% to virtually 100% affected women in different areas.
The operation is done in secret to girls aged 4-12. It is carried out by a women member of the family, a neighbour or a midwife. No anaesthetics are used, and instruments are usually not sterile. The girl's clitoris is being cut and sometimes part of the labia. To stop the bleeding the wound is covered with ash or icy water.
The latest findings from the Pishder region and Raniyah paint a dramatic picture of the situation: between March and August 2008, Wadi's mobile team paid 115 regular visits to 50 Villages and 25 girls schools in the Raniya region and as a result they met 2,952 women and girls. From these a total of 2,810 were mutilated, which amounts to 95 %.
 
Breaking the silence
 
These sad facts have been reported in local media, covered by newspapers, debated upon in magazines, radio stations and talk shows. This is an unprecedented appearance of FGM in the public sphere anywhere in the Middle East . This is a remarkable achievement – the secrecy and pretence that FGM does not happen have been an important source of power for the continuation of this practice.
Just recently the minister of health, Zarian Abdel Rahman, on behalf of the Kurdish Regional Government admitted publicly that in the region "60 percent of girls aged four to fourteen undergo circumcision, despite warnings by ministers against this grievous practice committed in the name of religion and hygiene." (AFP, 22.10.2008).
 
Public mobilisation
 
On the occasion of the International Women's Day, in March 2007, the campaign Stop FGM in Kurdistan published an open letter to the Kurdish Regional Parliament, in all local newspapers demanding it to legally ban FGM. In only few days, more than 14,000 people signed the letter, among them prominent journalists, artists and writers.
 
Legal reform
 
Following the public support to the demand to ban FGM, an experts conference met in April 2007, including lawyers, physicians, women's right and human rights activists to draft an anti-FGM law. The bill was submitted to the Regional Parliament and is expected to come into force by the end of 2008.
 
Social and educational action
 
Breaking the silence, mobilising public opinion and advancing a legal ban are the first steps in a longer process to stop FGM. To raise awareness, provide information and practical medical, social and psychological assistance WADI runs women-lead local mobile teams. They visit villages and schools, especially in the rural areas of the region, where services are hardly available and the formal education of women is low.
Through their long term work, the teams have come to be accepted and trusted in the communities in which they work, and can therefore help brining about change. Locally produced films about FGM are shown by the teams in the villages. The teams' experience has shown that many women are willing and hoping to stop this practice, and do not wish to put their own daughters through this. But they lack the support and organization to resist the strong social pressures to conform. The mobile teams help fulfilling this important need.
 
What You Can Do
 
We need your donation to continue the work of the Anti-FGM mobile teams – for their training and operation costs, and for setting up new teams to meet local demand.
 
$ 1,800 is enough to cover the monthly costs of each team. In this very cost-effective enterprise any donation, large or small, will make a difference. The teams-staff already sees a decrease in newly mutilated girls in the villages where they work.

How often do you start a search by looking on Google? Yeah, I do that more
often than I'd like to admit, too. But even if you think of yourself as a
Google sophisticate, chances are there are a lot of advanced and
specialized search techniques you aren't taking advantage of – in part
because Google is always developing new and useful ways to search. One
caveat – keep in mind that, for political and other reasons, Google
sometimes engages in search-result censorship (here's a recent example),
so you should never assume that not finding something on Google means it
isn't out there on the Internet somewhere. Hereand here are explanations
of how the censorship works.

That said, Google still offers a useful starting point. There are easy
ways to find new Google-related tools, but first let's review a few
existing tools that are particularly helpful for reporters. One such, I
think, is a link-navigation query. In Google's search box, if you type
link: before the URL for a website, Google will list all the other sites
that link to that website. Just use the domain name (that's whatever is
between the http:// and the first "/" at the end of the URL). For example,
if you type in link: www.J-source.ca you'll find the 661 websites that
have linked to this site. What's the point? Sometimes it can be helpful to
see who's linking to a site when you're looking for a particular source,
or trying to get more information about a website, a company, or what have
you.

There are lots of other useful search terms (what Google calls search
operators) that you can type directly into the search box, instead of
having to go to the "advanced search" page. To offer a few examples...

Padlocked Radio Ramaroshan resumed transmission

After strong objection of ACORAB, local intellectuals and local community,
Radio Ramaroshan resumed transmission from morning of 10 December 2008 after
two days of padlock.

In spite of regular threatening to the station for broadcasting series of
investigative report on corruption, black marketing and illegal trading of
liquor, the station continued to do so. A group of people padlocked the
station at the presence of Police Inspector on 8 December 2008. Though the
people apologised and let the station to resume unconditional at the
presence of Chief District Officer, it is very serious to know that local
police provided back support to padlock the station.

Along with issuing a strong press release condemning such coward act, ACORAB
did talk to Chief District Officer, District Police Officer, local party
leaders and Constituent Assembly members to draw their serious attention on
taking stern action against the culprits and provide support to the station.

Being umbrella organisation of community radios of Nepal, ACORAB will not
compromise on protecting right to information and freedom of expression and
will strongly defend to protect member community radios of Nepal. ACORAB
appreciates all for providing support to the station.

Kursus Jurnalisme Sastrawi XVI

Jakarta, 7-16 Januari 2009

Hari ini
hampir tak ada warga yang mendapatkan breaking news dari suratkabar.
Mereka mendapatkannya dari televisi, radio, SMS, telepon atau internet.
Tantangan baru muncul: bagaimana cara menulis panjang? Bukankah
relevansi suratkabar makin terletak pada kemampuannya menyajikan
analisis?

Tawaran ini di New York dijawab Tom Wolfe pada 1973. Wolfe mengenalkan sebuah genre baru saat itu: New Journalism.
Ia mengawinkan disiplin keras dalam jurnalisme dengan daya pikat
sastra. Ibarat novel tapi faktual. Genre ini mensyaratkan liputan
dalam, namun memikat. Genre ini kemudian dikenal dengan nama narative
reporting atau literary journalism. Menurut Nieman Reports, sejak
1980an, suratkabar-suratkabar di Amerika banyak memakai elemennya
ketika kecepatan televisi memaksa tampil dengan laporan mendalam.

Di
Jakarta, genre ini diperkenalkan lewat sebuah kursus pada Juli 2001.
Mula-mula hanya dua kali namun permintaan tetap datang.
Angkatan-angkatan baru pun dibuat setiap satu semester. Peserta datang
dari berbagai kota, dari Banda Aceh hingga Jayapura, dari Pontianak
hingga Kuching, dari Ende hingga Kupang. Alumninya, kini mulai
bermunculan. Ada yang menulis buku. Ada yang jadi pemimpin redaksi. Ada
yang sekolah lanjut.

Kursus ini dibuat dua minggu. Peserta
adalah orang yang biasa menulis untuk media. Setidaknya berpengalaman
sekitar lima tahun. Peserta maksimal 16 orang agar pengampu punya
perhatian memadai buat semua peserta. Calon peserta diharapkan mengirim
biodata dan contoh tulisan agar pengampu mengetahui kemampuan dasar
peserta lebih awal. Biaya pendaftaran Rp 3 juta. Biaya tersebut sudah
termasuk buku dan materi kursus non buku sekitar 200 halaman serta
coffe break dan makan siang.

INSTRUKTUR

Janet Steele --
Profesor dari George Washington University, spesialisasi sejarah media,
mengajar mata kuliah narrative journalism. Menulis buku The Sun Shines
for All: Journalism and Ideology in the Life of Charles A. Dana dan
Wars Within: The Story of Tempo, an Independent Magazine in Soeharto´s Indonesia, yang ahlibahahaskan oleh Arif Zulkifli dan diterbitkan oleh P.T. Dian Rakyat tahun 2007.  Juga menulis tentang jurnalisme di Timor Leste dan Malaysia. 

Andreas Harsono
-- Wartawan feature service Pantau, anggota International Consortium of
Investigative Journalists, mendapatkan Nieman Fellowship di Universitas
Harvard. Menyunting buku Jurnalisme Sastrawi: Antologi Liputan Mendalam
dan Memikat. Kini menyelesaikan buku From Sabang
to Merauke: Debunking the Myth of Indonesian Nationalism, membahas
hubungan media dengan kekerasan etnik, agama dan nasionalisme di
Indonesia dan Timor Lorosae.

"literary" dan "narrative" journalism.

-- Diskusi lanjutan tentang definisi jurnalisme sastrawi, dari Tom
Wolfe hingga Mark Kramer, dan pengaruhnya pada perkembangan suratkabar
mainstream di Amerika Serikat.

Tugas
untuk hari Kamis:  Menulis tentang sebuah peristiwa yang disaksikan. 
Mulai dengan adegan, tanpa "penjelasan." bersadarkan karya Tom Wolfe
"The Girl of the Year." Topiknya bisa apa saja tapi yang bisa memikat
pembaca untuk membaca narasi itu. Mohon tak membuat lebih panjang dari
dua halaman, dua spasi  agar semua peserta bisa mendapat bagian
membacakan karyanya.

Kamis, 8 Januari
2009 pukul 10:00-12:00 -- Diskusi tentang pekerjaan rumah.

Bacaan: 
"Sebuah Kegilaan di Simpang Kraft" oleh Chik Rini; sebagian dari buku
"In Cold Blood" karya Truman Capote dan kliping dari harian The New York Times pada 1959 "Wealthy Family, 3 of Family Slain."

Kamis, 8 Januari 2009 pukul 13:00-15:00
-- Diskusi tentang immersion reporting berdasarkan karya Truman Capote
"In Cold Blood" serta membandingkannya dengan "Sebuah Kegilaan di
Simpang Kraft."

Tugas untuk hari Jumat: Tulislah sebuah narasi
dengan gaya orang pertama ("saya" atau "aku" atau "abdi" atau "gua"
atau lainnya) untuk menggambarkan sebuah adegan. Gunakan model "Buru,
Menziarahi Negeri penghabisan" oleh Amarzan Loebis, dimana Amarzan
memasukkan dirinya dalam laporannya. Bahan ini akan dibacakan di depan
kelas. Panjang maksimal dua halaman, dua spasi.

Jumat, 9 Januari 2009 pukul 10:00-12:00 -- Diskusi tentang pekerjaan rumah yang dibuat berdasarkan "Buru, Menziarahi Negeri penghabisan" serta persoalan kata "saya."

"Tikungan Terakhir" (laporan kematian wartawan Rudi Singgih) oleh Agus
Sopian; "It´s an Honor" oleh Jimmy Breslin, "Buru, Menziarahi Negeri

-- Diskusi tentang persoalan struktur narasi, dan bagaimana
memanfaatkan narasi dalam berita hangat (breaking news) dengan contoh
"Tikungan Terakhir" oleh Agus Sopian dan "It´s an Honor" oleh Jimmy
Breslin. Penutupan serta tanya jawab dan penyerahan sertifikat.

MINGGU KEDUA oleh Andreas Harsono

Senin, 12 Januari 2009 pukul 10:00-12:00 -- Diskusi tentang
dasar-dasar dan etika jurnalisme. Pedomannya, The Elements of Journalism karya Bill Kovach dan Tom Rosenstiel. [Andreas Harsono]  

Bacaan: Buku
Sembilan Elemen Jurnalisme terjemahan karya Kovach dan Rosenstiel
disediakan dalam paket. Ada resensinya oleh Andreas Harsono. "Media
Bias in Covering the Tsunami in Aceh" karya Andreas Harsono.

Senin, 12 Januari 2009 pukul 13:00-15:00 - Diskusi soal jurnalisme sastrawi, membedakan mana yang fakta dan mana yang fiksi, tujuh pertimbangan dalam genre ini.

Bacaan: "Kegusaran Tom Wolfe" oleh Septiawan Santana Kurnia; "Ibarat Kawan Lama
Datang Bercerita" oleh Andreas Harsono dalam buku Jurnalisme Sastrawi;
laporan-laporan dalam Nieman Narrative Journalism Conference.

Tugas
untuk hari Rabu: Perhatikan sesuatu di lingkungan Anda. Bikin deskripsi
dengan padat. Manfaatkan penciuman, pendengaran, warna, gerakan,
kasar-halus, kontras (lucu, aneh, menarik) dan sebagainya. Hindarkan
klise macam "nyiur melambai" atau "angin sepoi-sepoi." Bikin deskripsi
yang akan merampas perhatian pembaca! Maksimal satu halaman. Bacalah
"Reporting in the key to good journalism" oleh Steven A. Holmes.

Rabu, 14 Januari 2009 pukul 10:00-12:00
- Diskusi lanjutan soal jurnalisme dan masalahnya dengan
nasionalisme-agama-etnik-ideologi-gender. Contoh-contoh dari Indonesia.

untuk hari Jumat: Carilah seseorang yang menarik serta wawancarailah
dia. Gunakan wawancara itu guna membuat deskripsi dan dialog. Pilih
kalimat-kalimat yang bernas, memikat, indah, kuat serta menyentak.
Maksimal satu halaman. Pikirkan dampak dari setiap kalimat dalam
mengikat emosi pembaca.

Jumat, 16 Januari 2009 pukul 10:00-12:00
- Satu isu namun muncul dalam empat pendekatan. Isunya Aceh. Munculnya,
empat naskah, empat gaya, empat struktur. Juga akan mendiskusikan
pekerjaan rumah.

The Radio Conference 2009: A Transnational Forum

This conference – the fifth transnational forum – aims to continue the
work of Sussex 2001, Madison, Wisconsin 2003 Melbourne 2005 and
Lincoln 2007 to bring together scholars, practitioners, and students
of radio to share ideas and perspectives on radio's cultural role in
an increasingly global media context.
We welcome proposals and abstracts for papers, panels, and symposia on
all aspects of radio – historical, cultural, critical, and
institutional – including investigations of the changing form and
content of radio and its associated audio media.

Preference will be given to papers and panels which report on current
empirical research, introduce innovations in learning and teach ing
strategies, or engagement with key areas of theory or debate in radio
studies.

You may submit proposals for individual papers, pre-constituted
panels, or symposia. Papers should be in English primarily. Should
there be sufficient interest, French and/or bilingual panels may be

submission. Please send a 250 to 300 word abstract, brief author's

The conference is jointly sponsored by the York University, Toronto
and the Radio Studies Network.

Global kids radio seeks cooperation, contributions

A German-based youth radio program for kids ages 3 -13 worldwide called
Radijojo is inviting radio journalists from around the world to contribute
and become part of its network.

Radijojo, which invites children to make their own shows, currently
produces educational and cultural content with the contributions of
schools, communities, radio stations and child projects from countries in
five continents.

Programs are focused on early music education, transnational
understanding, health education, ethics, environmental education, science
programs, language learning, promotion of peace, political awareness,
children's literature, etc.

Interested journalists should contribute radio productions in English,
French, Spanish or German. Technical support is also needed for regional
parts of the network, such as local radio stations and children projects.

GENEVA, Switzerland – November 25 marked the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  Organizations around the world use the UN day to comment on the situation facing women where they are based.  On November 25, UN's Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Yakin Erturk, commented the conditions of Iraqi women living in Iraq and as refugees in neighboring countries.
According to Erturk, "The ongoing conflict, high levels of insecurity, widespread impunity, collapsing economic conditions and rising social conservatism are impacting directly on the daily lives of Iraqi women and placing them under increased vulnerability to all forms of violence within and outside their home."  She continued, "Violence against Iraqi women is committed by numerous actors, such as militia groups, insurgents, Islamic extremists, law enforcement personnel, members of the family as well as the community."
Iraqi women re victims of rape, sex trafficking, forced and early marriages, murder, and abduction for sectarian or criminal reasons; many are driven or forced into prostitution.  In addition, women often fall victim to disproportionate use of force by US forces as well as Iraqi police and security forces.
Most crimes against women "are not reported because of stigma, fear of retaliation, or lack of confidence in the police," MADRE, an international women's rights group, wrote in its 2007 report about violence against women in Iraq.  A 2005 report published by the Iraqi National Association for Human Rights found that women held in Interior Ministry detention centers endure "systematic rape by the investigators. "
A few national and international organizations work to help rape victims in Iraq.  However, militias have targeted women's rights advocates, forcing their workers underground – making it more difficult to offer services to victims.
In addition, the lack of security in Iraq complicates national and international efforts to document the occurrences of sexual assault.  Marianne Molliman, who leads women's rights advocacy for Human Rights Watch, lamented that the security situation has prevented the organization from getting people on the ground to look at the issue for a long time.  HRW published its last report about rape in Iraq in 2003.
Ms. Erturk also expressed concern over violence threatening Iraqi women from their own family, such as "honor killings."  According to Erturk, the number of honor killings is increasing and they are largely committed with impunity.  When perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, the punishments are quite lenient under the Iraqi Penal Code.  Women who are sexually assaulted will often not report their attack for fear of then being ostracized or even killed by their family.  
In the northern Kurdish region of Iraq, where honor killings are among the primary causes of unnatural deaths among women, there are also frequent reports of female genital mutilation.  According to Kurdish Health Minister Zarian Abdel Rahman, 60 percent of girls (aged four to fourteen) undergo circumcision. 
A survey of 201 Kurdish villages, conducted by the German NGO, Wadi, found that 3,502 out of 5,628 women and girls had been mutilated.
Ms. Erturk concluded by urging "Iraqi government and the international community to prevent women and girls from being the 'soft targets' of violence and the invisible victims of the conflict in Iraq."

Although migration policies in the EU are primarily the competence of the Member States, the Union does have an important role to play because it can set the general framework. The EU has, for example, been criticized recently for the so-called �Return Directive�, which establishes common rules on the deportation of irregular migrants (see report in Spanish: Cr�tica a las pol�ticas de migraci�n europeas). Furthermore, countries on the borders of the Union, like Italy, want to share their responsibility for migrants with the other Member States (see report in Italian: L�industria di sfruttamenti). There is therefore a need for a common solution, claims Kacim Kellal of the French Ministry of Migration and National Identity (see interview in French). Peter Verhaege from Caritas Europa argues that it is essential to take steps towards more rights of migrant workers. (See

Ramaroshan FM Station Padlocked

A group of people from Achham district headquarters Mangalsen captured and
padlocked the transmission station of Radio Ramaroshan, the only community
radio in the district at Thulasain of Janalibandali VDC December 8, Monday.

The radio management claimed that liquor traders padlocked the station with
the help of police as the radio recently broadcast news of free alcohol
trading in Achham, a dry district. They also blamed police for being mere
spectators in the incident.

The radio transmission was halted for an indefinite period from Monday due
to the padlocking.

Freedom Forum terms this incident a severe violation of press freedom that
serves as an example of deteriorating media situation in Nepal. The Forum
asks the concerned authority to book the guilty and take stern actions
according to the law.
