Over 120 radio stations tune in to Radio 1812

Worldwide project on International Migrants Day

For the third year, the Belgian NGO December 18 is organising Radio 1812,
the worldwide radio event to celebrate International Migrants Day. Radio
1812 gathers radio stations from all over the world on 18th of December to
produce, broadcast and share programs on migration.

René Plaetevoet, Coordinator of the project and Director of December 18,
says: "Once again we are overwhelmed by the positive responses from the
radios all around the world. We hope that this Global Radio Event
contributes to democratising the discourse on migration: Radio1812 gives an
opportunity to make migrants' voices heard. With the economic crisis,
migrants find themselves even more vulnerable to abuse and discrimination.
It is therefore more than ever necessary to join in the International
Migrants Day events."

18th of December was declared International Migrants Day by the United
Nations in 2000. Groups all around the world and the international community
organise events and activities on that day to celebrate migrants, highlight
their role in societies and their difficulties.

Radio 1812 uses the most effective communication tool in the world, the
radio, to promote these activities and to diffuse their messages.

Based on two very successful previous editions, gathering 53 radios in 2006
and 152 radios in 2007, this year Radio 1812 is expecting even more radios.
So far, 113 radios, in 38 countries have confirmed their participation.
Radios in Asia, such as in the Philippines and Taiwan, will start the radio
marathon in the morning of the 18th followed by stations in Europe and
Africa, such as in Romania, in Germany, in the Netherlands, in Niger or in
South Africa. Finally, the radios on the West coast of the American
continent, such as in Costa Rica or in Chile, will join in.

All kinds of radio stations participate, from community stations to
commercial radios, from national and international broadcasters to online
radios. A world map on the front page of our site
<http://www.radio1812.net/> www.radio1812.net displays all the participating
radios. You can also listen to the programs of the radios from all around
the world. To date, 120 radio stations from 40 countries already confirmed
their participation.

We continue our tradition of welcoming guests to support the event:

On the 16th, Mr. Reynald Blion, Media and Diversity Manager with the Council
of Europe, gives a realistic picture of the representation of migration in
the media ;

On the 17th, we welcome two artists, Mouss and Hakim, from the famous French
group ZEBDA, for an interview about their role and their work on migration
heritage;

On the 18th, Mr. Prasad Kariyawasam, former Chairman of the UN Committee on
Migrant Workers, shares reflexions on migration and migrants' rights in a
radio interview.

IPS signs new partnership with AMARC

Inter Press Service (IPS) has signed a new partnership agreement with AMARC,
the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters. IPS and AMARC share
common values related to freedom of expression, media diversity and
communication for development. The global agreement foresees strengthened
co-operation in terms of expertise, content and distribution.

AMARC is an international NGO serving the community radio movement, with
almost 3,000 members and associates in 106 countries. Mario Lubetkin, IPS
Director General and Marcelo Solervicens, AMARC Secretary General signed the
partnership on the occasion of the AMARC Europe Conference in Bucharest,
Romania.

IPS and AMARC are already working together on different local initiatives.
AMARC-Pulsar works with IPS Latin America to produce audio material in
indigenous languages (Quechua, Kaqchiquel, Aymara and K'iche') as part of
the Voices of the Earth: Indigenous People and Rural Poverty initiative. At
the World Social Forum in Belem in January 2009 IPS and AMARC will share
print, web and audio reporting with their respective networks and audiences.

exposing violence against minorities in Orissa
State

Reporters Without Borders today condemned the
arrest of Lenin Kumar Roy, author and editor of
the quarterly review Nishan, in Bhubaneswar,
Orissa State over a book in which he accuses
Hindu extremists of waging a campaign of violence
against minorities in the Kandhamal district.

Two assistants, Ravi Jena and Dhananjay Lenka,
working for Sovan Press, publishers of Dharma
naanre Kandhamalre Raktara Nadi (Bloodbath in
Kandhamal in the Name of Religion) Sovan Press,
were also arrested.

Kumar Roy has been charged with violating
Articles 153-A and 295-A of the Indian criminal
code punishing "provocative literature likely to
disturb peace and communal harmony". Some
sections of the book condemn certain Hindu groups
for inciting violence against minorities, making
Christians sing Hindu religious songs and forcing
young non-Hindu women into prostitution.

"These arrests are arbitrary and violate the
right of free expression which is guaranteed in
India. Lenin Kumar Roy was arrested simply for
condemning inter-communal violence while the
local government has failed to protect the rights
of minorities in Kandhamal district", the
worldwide press freedom organisation said,
calling for his release and that of his two
assistants.

At least 700 copies of the book, which police
call "Maoist literature" were seized from the
publishers. A bail application made by his lawyer
on the day after Kumar Roy's arrest on 8 December
2008 was rejected.

Activist journalists and writers demonstrated on
10 December outside the residence of the governor
of Orissa State to protest against the arrests
and brandished placards with slogans such as
"Stop communalism", "Release Lenin and the
others" and "Thinking and writing are not crimes".

le 8 décembre 2008, de Lenin Kumar Roy, écrivain
et rédacteur en chef de la revue trimestrielle
locale Nishan, à Bhubaneswar, pour avoir publié
un livre dénonçant les récentes violences
survenues dans le district de Kandhamal, dans

minorités dans le district de Kandhamal. Nous
appelons à sa libération immédiate et celle de
ses deux assistants", a déclaré Reporters sans
frontières.

Lenin Kumar Roy a été traduit en justice pour
violation des articles 153-A et 295-A du code
pénal indien qui punissent la publication de
"littérature provocante pouvant troubler la paix
et l'harmonie commune". Certains passages
dénoncent l'attitude de certains groupes
hindouistes incitant à la violence contre les
minorités, contraignant les chrétiens à entonner
des chants religieux hindous et forçant les
jeunes femmes non hindouistes à la prostitution.

L'ouvrage, Dharma naanre Kandhamalre Raktara Nadi
("Bain de sang à Kandhamal au nom de la
religion"), accuse des extrémistes hindous d'être
les organisateurs de la campagne de violences
contre les minorités.

Au moins 700 exemplaires du livre, qualifié de
"littérature maoïste " par la police, ont été
saisis dans les locaux de la maison d'édition. Le
lendemain de son arrestation, la demande de
libération sous caution déposée par l'avocat de
Lenin Kumar Roy a été refusée.

Des activistes, journalistes et écrivains ont
manifesté, le 10 décembre 2008, devant la
résidence du gouverneur de la région d'Orissa
pour protester contre cette arrestation en
brandissant des pancartes sur lesquelles ont
pouvait lire "Stop au communautarisme", "Libérez
Lenin et les autres ", ou encore "Penser et
écrire ne sont pas des crimes".

Malawi's Daily Times - Malawi

Everyday for the past 44 years, Group Village Headman Mvundula of Chileka
in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kuntaja, Blantyre, has seen
aeroplanes hover above his village.

Just 8 kilometres from his domain lies Chileka International Airport, the
gate way to Malawi in the Southern region.

The cruel irony is that he has never boarded a plane his entire life, not
even Air Malawi's Kwacha.

"Villagers in various parts of the country occupy idle stretches of land
and develop the land. It is only after this process is completed that
further development comes in; it may be in the form of tarred roads and
trading centres. The sad thing is that most villagers will not enjoy the
fruits of their labour," he says.

T/A Kunthembwe, also from Blantyre, has an answer to this. He says the
people who construct roads and build bridges "where people need boats"
have dreams of their own, which they may just be implementing. The dreams,
he says, are not universally shared by members of the community who stand
to benefit from them.

"That is the problem we have always had, and seem not inclined to resolve.
The roads are not part of our dreams, the water kiosks are sometimes not
part of the vision for villagers," he says.

When Malawi received independence, he was there. As he grew, he saw
Chileka grow with him; and the tarred roads constructed. Yet, he never
shared in those dreams because he was not brought into the development
equation, let alone asked if that was what the people of Chileka wanted.

At first, people could sense a problem coming and leave it like that. Now
things have changed.

"That is the reason, after seeing that most of our problems were going
unheeded, we have come together to support the establishment of what we
feel is our greatest need: a community radio station. This will help us
voice our concerns and solve community problems," he says.

I've just got back from the Global Forum for Media Development in
Athens, Greece, where I interviewed a number of fascinating and
inspiring figures from the world of media development, journalism,
academia, activism and human rights, including:

anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR60) -

Either way, I would love to have the thoughtful and diverse
creative-radio community participate, and you can find out more below.

WITNESS (where I work) uses video to document and expose human rights
violations - but at one time or another we've all experienced the
power of visual images to make us feel what someone else feels, to see
with their eyes, to be inspired by their courage in the face of
oppression. So we asked our staff, family and friends to record a
60-second video or post a comment answering this simple question:
"What image opened your eyes to human rights?" You can talk about a a
video or a photo, a news report or a mobile phone clip, when you were
young, or quite recently, something uplifting or something bleak.

As you can see above, I've spoken to a series of fascinating people
about this, as have colleagues - and I would be honoured if you'd give
it some thought today, and share your answers with us too... You can

web. This bug has the same root cause as the similar problem affecting
YMail and Rocketmail users (and the experience for the user is a similar
loop), but the work around to solve the problem is slightly different.

For the moment, these users must first create an alias before they can
create a group. To do so, they should:
- Go to http://manage.members.yahoo.com/FULLEMAILADDRESSHERE
(replacing "FULLEMAILADDRESSHERE" with their full email address. So, for
example, if the user's email address was jerry313@att.net, they would
enter http://manage.members.yahoo.com/jerry313@att.net )
- Click on the "View My Profiles" link in the navigation at the top of
the page
- Click the "Create New Public Profile" button
- Once finished, click the "Finished Editing" button

Now these users should be able to join (or create) groups. Meanwhile,
we're working on a fix to make this work around unnecessary. And these
users can also be added to a group (or can subscribe via email by
sending email to GROUPNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) without going
through this process either.

Sorry for the extra hassle for these folks.

CKDU-FM is the non-profit campus-based community radio station at
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. CKDU is mandated to
provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters, providing a
forum for diverse and under-represented voices, music and news. The
station broadcasts within the Halifax region 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year and is run by more than 200 volunteers.

Nature of the Job
The Program Director is responsible for the programming schedule at
CKDU. Specifically this involves coordination of volunteer programmers
and the development of new programming initiatives. The Program Director
ensures that the station adheres to CKDU policies, CRTC regulations and
CKDU's promise of performance in regards to programming.

Applicable Skills
The Program Director must understand and work within CRTC programming
requirements and CKDU's promise of performance. Past experience with
community organizations and a demonstrated ability to work with
volunteers are essential. The Director must be supportive of a wide
variety of cultural, musical and political expressions, and be able to
discern which program proposals best match current station needs.
Practical experience in both musical and spoken word programming and
production would be beneficial. The Director must also possess effective
administration skills. The Program Director should have a strong level
of comfort working with computers and be proficient with software that
includes (but is not limited to) email clients, web browsers, file
transfer applications and word processing. Knowledge of and proficiency
with HTML and databases are assets. Familiarity with digital audio and
the Linux OS are also assets.

Salary: $15.75/hour
Terms: 32 hours/week

SANTA CRUZ-BOLIVIA (Agencia de Noticias Chaco-Amazonía-ANC).- Existen
en Bolivia algunos medios de comunicación, que atravesaron la barrera
de lo permisible en cuanto a posición político-ideológica, traducida
en contenidos mediáticos. Radio Panamericana (red nacional con
presencia internacional, vía "real audio" en internet y por satélite)
es uno de esos medios.

Ejemplo 1: El contenido de su noticiero matinal (de 7:30 a 8:00 a.m.)
del martes 11 de diciembre de 2007, en el que de doce noticias
difundidas, once (92%), son atribuidas a fuentes informativas de la
"oposición política". A ello se suma una puntualísima conexión diaria
(seguramente por contrato, y con fuerte remuneración de por medio) con
VOA ("La Voz de América", radioemisora del gobierno de EE.UU.), con
CNN-radio (Cable Network News, la transnacional experta en
manipulación de noticias) y a través de "Cuidando su salud desde los
EEUU" (programa que describe cómo resolver los males de salud del
sobre-estresante primer mundo).

Ejemplo 2: Cada domingo cerca al mediodía, al menos en los últimos
ocho años, aparecen en esta emisora, cotidianos "visitantes", que más
parecen dueños de esa radio, como ocurre con el empresario Samuel
Doria Medina, ex ministro de Planeamiento de Jaime Paz Zamora, quien
siendo tercero en la elección de 1989, llegó a ser Presidente de la
República, gracias al favor de su socio Hugo Bánzer. Doria Medina
(compañero de gabinete de Jorge Quiroga Ramírez) se muestra nervioso
en Panamericana, probablemente porque la gradual caída del dólar
afecta a sus suculentos negocios del cemento y las hamburguesas.

Ejemplo 3: Panamericana (como otros medios) "ha hecho propias las
voces de las voces de la oposición" política al actual gobierno, como
lo afirma el estudio titulado "Medios y conflicto en Bolivia: Caminos
para fomentar el papel constructivo de los medios en una
gobernabilidad vulnerable", realizado en octubre 2006, por
Internacional Media Support-IIMS (de Dinamarca).

Ejemplo 4: El gerente-propietario de Panamericana, Miguel Antonio
Dueri Antonmaria, fue embajador del Gobierno de Bolivia en Egipto, del
2 de septiembre de 1998, al 31 de mayo de 2000, durante la gestión
gubernamental del ex dictador Hugo Bánzer Suárez, y del empresario
banquero Jorge Quiroga Ramírez (1997-2002).

Por tanto, no podríamos esperar en Panamericana equilibrio
informativo, o un servicio comunicacional-social que favorezca a la
mayoría social, sino contenidos benefician (exclusivamente) a los
grupos económicos del poder, de los que su dueño forma parte.

Throughout the past year in Montreal multiple artists have come together
for Artists Against Apartheid, an ongoing concert series uniting artists
in solidarity with the growing international movement against Israeli
apartheid.

CKUT radio presents a special radio broadcast featuring live performances
recorded at the Artists Against Apartheid concert series throughout this
past year, recordings that are being broadcast for the first time live on
CKUT community radio in Montreal.

Broadcast will feature performances from groundbreaking artists from
different front-lines within Montreal's internationally celebrated music
scene; featuring live performances from the celebrated hip-hop ensemble
Nomadic Massive, jazz saxophonist Matana Roberts, cellist Rebecca Foon
from Silver Mt. Zion, composer Antoine Bustros, hip-hop artist Vox Sambou,
the Kalmunity Vibe Collective, Balkan musician Lubo Alexandrov, poet Kaie
Kellough and others...

As a cultural initiative Artists Against Apartheid occurs as Israel's
military occupation over the Gaza Strip and West Bank intensifies, in
violation of international law and multiple U.N. resolutions. Palestinian
citizens face an entrenched system of racial discrimination and
segregation, resembling the defeated apartheid system in South Africa. A
matrix of Israeli-only roads, electrified fences, and over 500 military
checkpoints and roadblocks erase freedom of movement.

In response to apartheid policies imposed on the Palestinian people by
Israel multiple artists are coming together in Montreal through the
ongoing Artists Against Apartheid concert series, presenting a cultural
force in solidarity with the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom.

This radio broadcast is presented on CKUT radio within Tadamon!'s ongoing
political campaigns operating in Canada, including the campaign for
boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid state and the
campaign to challenge the listing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization
by the Canadian government.

Wouldn't it be great if you were walking down the street and your phone
rang? You know what would be even better? If, when you picked up the
phone, it wasn't a telemarketer or someone calling to ask you about your
expired car warranty, but two people genuinely interested in your day and
the stories you have to tell.

That's what Dial-A-Stranger tries to do–interject a little bit of art,
mystery and general excitement into your day. The hosts take questions
from listeners, and attempt to find answers to them by asking strangers
over the telephone. The results are compiled into a weekly podcast.
Mercedes Martinez and Zachary Kent started the show to highlight the
stories of everyday people and to be the excitement they wanted to see in
the world. In the process of producing the show they have talked to people
about a wide range of diverse subjects including tiki conventions, egg
donation, Disneyland and bounty hunting. This knowledge would make them
much more interesting at the dinner parties they still aren't invited to.

Appeal for Donations

We invite you to take part in social change in the making. Over the past four years, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Iraqi-Kurdistan has ceased to be a practice protected by the silence of strict social taboo. FGM is now the topic of open public debate, with growing active support to ban it by law and combat against it through social, medical and educational action. This remarkable change has been made possible by a group of local activists, working across Iraqi-Kurdistan in WADI's various projects and initiatives for women's rights and equality. Not only have we exposed and began to document how wide-spread FGM is in our society, but we have also launched in 2006 a campaign to stop it. To hold to the successes achieved by this campaign so far, and to advance further, we need your support: any donation can make a difference.

Stopping FGM in Iraqi-Kurdistan: successes, hopes and challenges

Female genital mutilation is recognized in international conventions as a human rights violation and a severe form of violence against women. For several decades, international and local agencies and organizations have been campaigning against it in various countries of Africa, and more recently in Europe as well. But in Iraq, as in other countries of the Middle East, official documents of governments and United Nations agencies alike, still neglect this abuse.
In 2004, members of WADI'smobile teams – working to provide basic medical, social and educational support to women in the rural areas of Garmyan region – received first reports about FGM. They started to ask questions: interviewing a sample of nearly 1,500 women and young girls in various villages, the mobile teams discovered that 907 of them were victims of FGM. A study in the area of Erbil brought similar results: of 440 women interviewed, 380 were circumcised.
Following these troubling discoveries, the campaign Stop FGM in Kurdistan was launched in 2006, planned and carried out by Wadi's staff in Iraq in cooperation with other local women's groups and human rights organizations. The Suleymiah-based Iraqi NGO WOLA – Woman Law Center is now running this camapaign in co-operation with Wadi.

In the end of two short years since its beginning, the campaign can already report successes:

Documentation

In 2007 we began a data-collection research in all three Governorates of Iraqi-Kurdistan, interviewing more than 1,800 women. Analysis of the data has not been finalized yet, but preliminary findings show that FGM is indeed widespread across the region – ranging from 60% to virtually 100% affected women in different areas.
The operation is done in secret to girls aged 4-12. It is carried out by a women member of the family, a neighbour or a midwife. No anaesthetics are used, and instruments are usually not sterile. The girl's clitoris is being cut and sometimes part of the labia. To stop the bleeding the wound is covered with ash or icy water.
The latest findings from the Pishder region and Raniyah paint a dramatic picture of the situation: between March and August 2008, Wadi's mobile team paid 115 regular visits to 50 Villages and 25 girls schools in the Raniya region and as a result they met 2,952 women and girls. From these a total of 2,810 were mutilated, which amounts to 95 %.

Breaking the silence

These sad facts have been reported in local media, covered by newspapers, debated upon in magazines, radio stations and talk shows. This is an unprecedented appearance of FGM in the public sphere anywhere in the Middle East . This is a remarkable achievement – the secrecy and pretence that FGM does not happen have been an important source of power for the continuation of this practice.
Just recently the minister of health, Zarian Abdel Rahman, on behalf of the Kurdish Regional Government admitted publicly that in the region "60 percent of girls aged four to fourteen undergo circumcision, despite warnings by ministers against this grievous practice committed in the name of religion and hygiene." (AFP, 22.10.2008).

Public mobilisation

On the occasion of the International Women's Day, in March 2007, the campaign Stop FGM in Kurdistan published an open letter to the Kurdish Regional Parliament, in all local newspapers demanding it to legally ban FGM. In only few days, more than 14,000 people signed the letter, among them prominent journalists, artists and writers.

Legal reform

Following the public support to the demand to ban FGM, an experts conference met in April 2007, including lawyers, physicians, women's right and human rights activists to draft an anti-FGM law. The bill was submitted to the Regional Parliament and is expected to come into force by the end of 2008.

Social and educational action

Breaking the silence, mobilising public opinion and advancing a legal ban are the first steps in a longer process to stop FGM. To raise awareness, provide information and practical medical, social and psychological assistance WADI runs women-lead local mobile teams. They visit villages and schools, especially in the rural areas of the region, where services are hardly available and the formal education of women is low.
Through their long term work, the teams have come to be accepted and trusted in the communities in which they work, and can therefore help brining about change. Locally produced films about FGM are shown by the teams in the villages. The teams' experience has shown that many women are willing and hoping to stop this practice, and do not wish to put their own daughters through this. But they lack the support and organization to resist the strong social pressures to conform. The mobile teams help fulfilling this important need.

What You Can Do

We need your donation to continue the work of the Anti-FGM mobile teams – for their training and operation costs, and for setting up new teams to meet local demand.

$ 1,800 is enough to cover the monthly costs of each team. In this very cost-effective enterprise any donation, large or small, will make a difference. The teams-staff already sees a decrease in newly mutilated girls in the villages where they work.

How often do you start a search by looking on Google? Yeah, I do that more
often than I'd like to admit, too. But even if you think of yourself as a
Google sophisticate, chances are there are a lot of advanced and
specialized search techniques you aren't taking advantage of – in part
because Google is always developing new and useful ways to search. One
caveat – keep in mind that, for political and other reasons, Google
sometimes engages in search-result censorship (here's a recent example),
so you should never assume that not finding something on Google means it
isn't out there on the Internet somewhere. Hereand here are explanations
of how the censorship works.

That said, Google still offers a useful starting point. There are easy
ways to find new Google-related tools, but first let's review a few
existing tools that are particularly helpful for reporters. One such, I
think, is a link-navigation query. In Google's search box, if you type
link: before the URL for a website, Google will list all the other sites
that link to that website. Just use the domain name (that's whatever is
between the http:// and the first "/" at the end of the URL). For example,
if you type in link: www.J-source.ca you'll find the 661 websites that
have linked to this site. What's the point? Sometimes it can be helpful to
see who's linking to a site when you're looking for a particular source,
or trying to get more information about a website, a company, or what have
you.

There are lots of other useful search terms (what Google calls search
operators) that you can type directly into the search box, instead of
having to go to the "advanced search" page. To offer a few examples...

Padlocked Radio Ramaroshan resumed transmission

After strong objection of ACORAB, local intellectuals and local community,
Radio Ramaroshan resumed transmission from morning of 10 December 2008 after
two days of padlock.

In spite of regular threatening to the station for broadcasting series of
investigative report on corruption, black marketing and illegal trading of
liquor, the station continued to do so. A group of people padlocked the
station at the presence of Police Inspector on 8 December 2008. Though the
people apologised and let the station to resume unconditional at the
presence of Chief District Officer, it is very serious to know that local
police provided back support to padlock the station.

Along with issuing a strong press release condemning such coward act, ACORAB
did talk to Chief District Officer, District Police Officer, local party
leaders and Constituent Assembly members to draw their serious attention on
taking stern action against the culprits and provide support to the station.

Being umbrella organisation of community radios of Nepal, ACORAB will not
compromise on protecting right to information and freedom of expression and
will strongly defend to protect member community radios of Nepal. ACORAB
appreciates all for providing support to the station.

Kursus Jurnalisme Sastrawi XVI

Hari ini
hampir tak ada warga yang mendapatkan breaking news dari suratkabar.
Mereka mendapatkannya dari televisi, radio, SMS, telepon atau internet.
Tantangan baru muncul: bagaimana cara menulis panjang? Bukankah
relevansi suratkabar makin terletak pada kemampuannya menyajikan
analisis?

Tawaran ini di New York dijawab Tom Wolfe pada 1973. Wolfe mengenalkan sebuah genre baru saat itu: New Journalism.
Ia mengawinkan disiplin keras dalam jurnalisme dengan daya pikat
sastra. Ibarat novel tapi faktual. Genre ini mensyaratkan liputan
dalam, namun memikat. Genre ini kemudian dikenal dengan nama narative
reporting atau literary journalism. Menurut Nieman Reports, sejak
1980an, suratkabar-suratkabar di Amerika banyak memakai elemennya
ketika kecepatan televisi memaksa tampil dengan laporan mendalam.

Di
Jakarta, genre ini diperkenalkan lewat sebuah kursus pada Juli 2001.
Mula-mula hanya dua kali namun permintaan tetap datang.
Angkatan-angkatan baru pun dibuat setiap satu semester. Peserta datang
dari berbagai kota, dari Banda Aceh hingga Jayapura, dari Pontianak
hingga Kuching, dari Ende hingga Kupang. Alumninya, kini mulai
bermunculan. Ada yang menulis buku. Ada yang jadi pemimpin redaksi. Ada
yang sekolah lanjut.

Kursus ini dibuat dua minggu. Peserta
adalah orang yang biasa menulis untuk media. Setidaknya berpengalaman
sekitar lima tahun. Peserta maksimal 16 orang agar pengampu punya
perhatian memadai buat semua peserta. Calon peserta diharapkan mengirim
biodata dan contoh tulisan agar pengampu mengetahui kemampuan dasar
peserta lebih awal. Biaya pendaftaran Rp 3 juta. Biaya tersebut sudah
termasuk buku dan materi kursus non buku sekitar 200 halaman serta
coffe break dan makan siang.

The Radio Conference 2009: A Transnational Forum

Location: York University, Toronto, Canada,
Dates: July 27-30th, 2009

This conference – the fifth transnational forum – aims to continue the
work of Sussex 2001, Madison, Wisconsin 2003 Melbourne 2005 and
Lincoln 2007 to bring together scholars, practitioners, and students
of radio to share ideas and perspectives on radio's cultural role in
an increasingly global media context.
We welcome proposals and abstracts for papers, panels, and symposia on
all aspects of radio – historical, cultural, critical, and
institutional – including investigations of the changing form and
content of radio and its associated audio media.

Preference will be given to papers and panels which report on current
empirical research, introduce innovations in learning and teach ing
strategies, or engagement with key areas of theory or debate in radio
studies.

You may submit proposals for individual papers, pre-constituted

Submission deadlines

Abstracts deadline is Friday 30th January 2009 and decisions will
be20communicated before Tuesday 30 March 2009. If you have a
particular need for an earlier decision please explain why in your
submission. Please send a 250 to 300 word abstract, brief author's
biography and contact information to Anne MacLennan at
radio09@yorku.ca (radio zero nine at yorku.ca).

The conference is jointly sponsored by the York University, Toronto
and the Radio Studies Network.

The proposals will be peer reviewed by a panel of international

Global kids radio seeks cooperation, contributions

A German-based youth radio program for kids ages 3 -13 worldwide called
Radijojo is inviting radio journalists from around the world to contribute
and become part of its network.

Radijojo, which invites children to make their own shows, currently
produces educational and cultural content with the contributions of
schools, communities, radio stations and child projects from countries in
five continents.

Programs are focused on early music education, transnational
understanding, health education, ethics, environmental education, science
programs, language learning, promotion of peace, political awareness,
children's literature, etc.

Interested journalists should contribute radio productions in English,
French, Spanish or German. Technical support is also needed for regional
parts of the network, such as local radio stations and children projects.
