MediaInZimbabwe Website.

http://www.mediainzimbabwe.com/

This website is an offshoot of ZimJournalists Arise which hit the internet
on August 26 2006 to Feburary 2007at www.zimjournalist1.blogspot.com

This was the brainchild of a senior Zimbabwean journalist to have a
website for Zimbabwean journalists and those who write about Zimbabwe.
This was in realization that despite being abused by the Robert Mugabe
regime, journalists still play an important role to deal with problems in
the country and to prepare for the future of a New Zimbabwe.

Hundreds of Zimbabwean journalists have been forced into the streets or
into exile for political and economic reasons, save for a small but
vibrant media.

Although journalists have faced harassment, torture, arrest, victimization
of all sorts, including poor working conditions, we believe that change,
as sure as tomorrow will come is Coming.

It is with that hope that we would like to be the central point for
Zimbabwean journalists. Our main functions is to link journalists with
newsmakers, so that the former can actively cover events and for
newsmakers to publicize their events.

We aim to facilitate this, by circulating information that journalists may
find handy in their work, provide a platform for networking, no matter
which part of the world we are in, to share ideas. Our main focus is to
promote well- informed and well-trained journalists, by keeping
journalists up to date with of training opportunities available and enough
information to prepare for a New Zimbabwe.

Our focus is to have journalists, even those who have been forced by
circumstances to leave their chosen professions, from getting their pens
rusty so that they are not caught with their pants down in a new and
better Zimbabwe.

While we may presently are working in a hostile media environment,
governed by oppressive pieces of legislation such as AIPPA, we need to be
able to be prepared for the future and also be better prepared to overcome
the present hurdles.

Zimbabwean journalists are talented and have a lot of potential as shown
by the growing number of publications, radio stations and news websites,
that have sprouted outside the Motherland.

Therefore given a chance, the Zimbabwean media can spring back to life one
day and we want to prepare journa's for that day.

As a lesson from the last 27 years of repressive rule, we endeavor to have
journalists who are sensitive to human rights and democracy, JOURNALISTS
that are past partisan journalism. Journalists who will report fairly and
objectively, without fear nor favor.

We endeavor to promote a journalists that will not discriminate on the
basis of tribe, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or any other
basis. This also involves dealing with any opposition and democratic
forces, whom we believe are also accountable to the people of Zimbabwe.

This website is for all Zimbabwean journalists whether they work for the
state media, private or international media.

Even state media workers are part of the website's plans because we
realise that although they may be used by the regime to churn out
propaganda, most of them are not doing so willingly but are doing it to
survive.

Media In Zimbabwe hopes to reach out to these journalists, expose them to
news, training programes and organisations that can help them become
better journalists in a New Zimbabwe. MIZ hopes that they are enlightened,
to the ethics and professional standards in journalism. MIZ also hopes to
expose them to news and opportunities beyond the eyes of the ruling party.

Another area of special interest to us are freelance journalists. Although
there are no statistics, freelance journalists, consist quite a number of
journalist, most of whom have been made jobless because of the closure and
turmoil in the Zimbabwean media. Most of these freelancers, do not have
access to press statements, reports etc. This is where we would like to
come in to help them with some of the tools they need.

We are not a news website, but a tool for journalists, and will only cover
a few important news items, or news not normally covered by most of the
media, as we feel that there are enough news website generating news. We
are essentially a TOOL for journalists.

The website also serves to stimulate debate by occasionally giving
commentary on issues and guidance on coverage by taking a honest, candid
and objective look at current issues, suggest ways to deal with the
Zimbabwe crisis and most importantly the challenging issues facing the
Zimbabwean media.

We look forward to working with each and everyone of you. Newsmakers are
most welcome to communicate through us, to a mailing list of the hundreds
of journalists in Zimbabwe, and all over the world.

Yours In
Striving For A Better Zimbabwean Journalist

Women make waves in Jordan Valley

Suha Philip Ma'ayeh, Foreign Correspondent

Muneera Shatti, left, and Asma Raja prepare to broadcast their programme.

Salah Malkawi / The National

AMMAN //For the past year, Muneera Shatti and Asma Raja, two young women
from the Jordan Valley, have broadcast a weekly radio show that tackles the
issues faced by their impoverished community, from a lack of buses and the
theft of water, to boys using mobile phones to take photos of schoolgirls.

The work is not without challenges as the tribal-dominated valley on which
they report is staunchly conservative and one of 20 pockets of poverty where
the average income is about US$1,800 (Dh6,624) per year.

"At first there were men who refused to be interviewed by us. They would
say, 'You are women'. But they got used to us. Just last week I interviewed
young men in a cafe to gauge their views regarding public services," Ms
Shatti said. "Interviewing men is something I would have never imagined
myself doing before I became a correspondent for the radio."

In one programme, Ms Shatti reported on the lack of buses connecting her
town with a nearby village. Within a week, the Jordan Valley Authority
responded and provided the needed bus.

"That was encouraging even though later the bus was taken away as other bus
drivers protested that it was affecting their business."

In another broadcast, Ms Raja, 24, reported on water theft.

"Farmers were stealing water from the main pipes, depriving residents of
drinking water. I talked to a senior water official who promised to provide
citizens with another source of water while the government closed some of
the pipes to try to stop those from stealing. Since then, water theft has
declined."

Because the women do not have a licence to broadcast in their community,
Radio Al Balad, an Amman-based community radio, produces and hosts their
show, called the Voice of the Valley.

The women take three buses to get to Amman to broadcast the show, but for
them, the trip is worth it.

Radio Al Balad has been pushing hard to get a licence to launch the first
all-women community radio in Jordan.

But last month, the government turned down the licence application without
giving a reason. The country's laws do not oblige the government to explain
why it rejects applications.

The decision, however, has frustrated Daoud Kuttab, the founder of Radio Al
Balad, who has been trying to launch Zaharat Alghor, the Flower of the
Valley, which would not broadcast news or political programmes.

"We were excited. It is a station run by women. It was supposed to be a
women empowerment station. We were already seeing success in the one-hour
programme," he said. "If the government did not want to give us a licence,
then why entertain our application in the first place? It took us a year and
a half to fulfil the requirements of the application, including paying
$15,000 for the initiation licence fee. We rented offices [in the Jordan
Valley], too."

In 2002, Jordan liberalised its airwaves and a year later created an
audiovisual commission tasked with licensing independent satellite and radio
stations. Since then, 26 independent stations have been granted licences,
most of whom provide music, entertainment and social programmes. Seven have
licences for news and political programmes.

It is 50 per cent more expensive to get a licence for a news and political
broadcast because, according to insiders, the AVC believes the latter
generates more advertisements, while sceptics see it as another restriction
on media freedom.

It is the second time in two years that the government has rejected an
application by Mr Kuttab for a community radio licence, raising some
speculation that the decision was motivated by personal reasons.

Conservative officials are concerned that community radio in a traditional
society could create problems among tribes and upset their social and
cultural values.

Mr Kuttab has also been criticised for allowing Palestinian refugees from
Gaza to make their plea for citizenship on his radio programmes. Jordan sees
such a policy as serving the interest of Israel because the refugees would
then no longer be able to apply to return to Israel.

Because Radio Al Balad is licensed to broadcast only in Amman, residents in
the Jordan Valley can only hear the programme by tuning into Al Qamr radio
station in Jericho, a West Bank city on the other side of the Jordan Valley.

Mr Kuttab had signed an agreement with Al Qamr to rebroadcast the show until
he was able to obtain a licence. The programme can also be heard online, but
only 16 per cent of Jordanian households have internet access.

Mr Kuttab has made it clear in editorials and blogs that he is not happy
with the AVC's decision. But Hussein Bani Hani, the AVC head, argued the
government had acted in the interest of investors.

"The government wants to give a chance for every investor. We want to give
equal opportunities to all," he said. "All the governorates are covered with
radio stations, and we have community stations in several universities that
also provide training for university students on media broadcasting.

"The stations tackle different subjects in different communities and
broadcast social programmes which vary from women and child issues to youth
issues. They are funded by organisations involved in media development."

Although the community radio stations have been welcomed in most areas,
there are some criticism that they are not completely independent.

Ms Shatti and Ms Raja were discouraged at first by the government's decision
not to grant them a licence. They closed the offices that Radio Al Balad had
rented for them last week. But the women said they will continue to
broadcast from Amman.

"I will not let the licence get me down. I will continue to work to make the
voices of people in remote areas heard," Ms Raja said.

At last!

For years, people have been asking Transom for advice on recording over the

done. Jeff covers high and low tech options--analog phone couplers and
hybrids, digital hybrids, cell phone taps, computer-based telephony like
Skype, taping little mics to telephones, and instructions on configuring
"mix minus". Various hardware and software options are reviewed, with
audio samples. There are links to other resources. This is a really good

Global Voices Online » Video: Community Radios Fill the ...
By Juliana Rincón Parra

In a highly globalized and digitalized world, sometimes we may forget that
in many regions of the world, not even electricity is available, and the
possibility of using internet as an alternative information source is
still a distant dream. It is in locations like Guatemala, Chad and India
that community radio rises as the alternative for native communities to
speak about their concerns, hear news and stories, receive information and
all this in their native languages.

In Guatemala, Proyecto Suri [es] has been giving a community radio
workshop to the CUC, the Peasant Unity Committee [es], so they can train
different members of indigenous communities in the techniques to produce
radio shows geared specifically to their needs of information. In a
country where there are 54 living languages [en], there are places where
Spanish, the official language in Guatemala, is not spoken, or when it is,
it is spoken as a second language. Proyecto Suri writes about how
community radios have assisted in keeping these languages alive

Countries:
India, Chad, Guatemala
Topics:
Ideas, Arts & Culture, Development, Refugees, Entertainment

Spanish, English

The Business of Changing Lives
Internews Launches Guide to Making Community Media Sustainable

(February 26, 2009) Internews has launched a wide-ranging new guide
addressing the challenge of how to make community media financially
sustainable in countries around the world. The Community Media
Sustainability Guide: The Business of Changing Lives (direct link:
http://www.internews.org/pubs/pdfs/InternewsCommunityMediaGuide2009.pdf
), is a 81-page publication covering topics such as incorporating new
online platforms and using alternative energy to power radio stations,
all with an eye to keeping the doors open in a sector not known for its
profitability.

"Years ago, the notion of a business model for community media would
have brought responses ranging from dismay to ridicule," lead author and
editor Jean Fairbairn writes in the introduction to the guide.
"Community media's origins in political struggle, its community
ownership structure, and its mission – to give voice to the voiceless,
to provide an alternative to mainstream media, to place control of media
in the hands of ordinary people – seem to contradict the notions of both
'business' and 'model.' Today, however, community media is a valued and
recognized part of the media landscape."

In the guide, case studies of community media outlets and networks
include creative solutions to the perpetual problem of finding enough
funding to stay in business. For instance, Radio Madanpokhara in Nepal
effectively gains community support by asking listeners to donate the
equivalent of a handful of rice, while the Coffee Lifeline project in
Rwanda relies on partnerships with international groups to supply
agricultural news to coffee farmers. Meanwhile, Desi Radio, serving
London's Punjabi community, thrives on a mixed business model that
includes selling advertising, conducting media trainings and hiring out
volunteers to dance at weddings.

"Community media are becoming increasingly recognized for their value in
connecting with hard-to-reach and marginalized populations," Fairbairn
said in a recent interview. "Because they are local and participatory,
they reach people in a way that is sensitive to local cultures, and in
local languages and dialects."

Seventy years since the first community radio stations began
broadcasting to tin miners in Bolivia, community media has come of age.
The Internews guide is being published just as governments around the
world are introducing legislation that enables and protects community
media, and as media outlets are learning to take advantage of the new
online media platforms to extend their reach and services.

The Community Media Sustainability Guide is designed for community media
practitioners and activists, trainers, and the donors and development
agencies that support them. The guide provides different perspectives on
sustainability, practical approaches to achieving it, and a
comprehensive list of resources for practitioners and activists.

The publication was funded by a grant to Internews Network from the US
Agency for International Development via a subgrant from Pact. The
advisory committee, many of whom wrote sections of the guide, includes
community media experts Kate Coyer, Bruce Girard, Franklin Huizies,
Birgitte Jallov, Bill Siemering, and Ivan Sigal.

"It's Your Radio, Your Voice"

Thousands Attend Opening Celebration of Southern Sudan Community Radio
Station
http://www.internews.org/prs/2009/20090223_sudan.shtm

[excerpt]

(February 23, 2009) When Naath FM, the only community radio station in Leer
County, Southern Sudan, was officially launched this week, thousands of
people came to honor and claim the station that has been a part of their
lives for the past year.

"I have never seen anything like this," said Deborah Ensor, Internews Sudan
Program Director. "There were literally thousands of people here, and they
were all trying to get into the studio. If you want to know what community
radio is all about, you simply must come to Leer."

Naath FM is one of four radio stations that Internews has built in the most
remote regions of Southern Sudan. Though the station has been on the air for
more than a year, officials and the community were eager to have it formally
opened and dedicated as a community radio station.

Appropriately enough, the station is called Naath FM – it means "Citizen" in
the local language of Nuer and was chosen after listeners called in and
suggested it.

Gender and Media Diversity Journal No. 6

Gender, Diversity, Elections and the Media

The Gender and Media Diversity Journal is the biennial journal of the Gender
and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC). The GMDC is a physical and virtual
resource centre based in Southern Africa, managed by Gender Links and the
Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network, with linkages in Africa
and across the globe. The journal is an intellectual but not academic
journal. It provides up-to-date and cutting edge information on media
diversity in Southern Africa and the space for the dissemination of research
findings and projects; case studies; campaigns; policy developments; and
opinion and debate on media practice in the region. Each journal covers
latest developments in media and diversity, as well a focuses on a different
thematic area identified in consultation with the GMDC advisory group.

Contributions are sought in the following broad categories:

* What's New - briefs on new research, initiatives in training and
education, policy initiatives, and IT developments relevant to gender, media
and diversity, and activism. (500 words each)
* Media watch - review of media programmes from a gender and diversity
perspective, reports on recent monitoring projects by gender and media
networks (750 words each or in-depth articles 3000 words each)
* Talk back - opinion (750 words) and letters (250 words)

In focus topic: Gender, Diversity, Elections and the Media
(Articles 3000 - 3500 words each)
The sixth edition of the Gender and Media Diversity Journal will focus on
the topic of "Gender, Diversity, Elections and the Media." This topic is
particularly relevant given the large number of elections happening in the
SADC region in the next few years, the August 2008 signing of the SADC
Gender Protocol (which includes commitments from leaders to 50% women in
decision-making) , and Gender Links' ongoing work with media and politicians
around gender and elections. The recent past and next couple of years will
see elections all around Southern Africa. The complex post-Zimbabwean
election aftermath, last years first Angolan Parliamentary elections since
1992, and Ghana's recent successful handover of power through the polls, all
offer cases for analysing intersections between Gender, Diversity, Elections
and the Media. Malawi, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique will
all go to the polls in 2009. In 2010, it is Mauritius' turn. The media's
coverage of elections is central to ensuring free and fair elections,
including the representation of diverse voices. Media access is also
essential for women politicians, to work towards successfully achieving the
50% goal.
