Lite rock versus local
culture<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CJFFJC/45ec1b64d9/26dc6f4be8/551fa24ade/id=3546&utm_campaign=Now%20on%20J-Source%3A%20Killing%20comments%3B%20Saving%20community%20radio%3B%20State%20of%20Can%20mags&utm_content=mediamentor@gmail.com&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_term=Lite%20rock%20versus%20local%20culture>
Citizens of Gabriola Island want a community radio station, so they can hear
local culture on the air and have the benefit of emergency broadcasting.
Rogers wants them to step aside for lite rock programming from Victoria, and
has decided to speak against the islanders' CRTC application. The case
reminds us of the struggle and value of community radio stations around the
world.

[excerpt]

A PIRATE radio station operating from the back of a butchery in Mdantsane
is growing in popularity – but is now under investigation.

About two weeks ago, the pirate Mdantsane FM – nicknamed Mdiza FM – went
live on the 99.5 frequency and has since hosted a number of talks with
local politicians and taxi and youth associations.

The station caused confusion among residents, who were eagerly awaiting
the launch of a community radio station with a similar name.

The community station had been granted a licence by the Independent
Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) and was supposed to
operate on the 104 frequency.

Mdiza FM station manager and local businessman Siviwe Mahlahla yesterday
admitted his station had no licence and was operating "underground" while
awaiting Icasa ap- proval .

When the Daily Dispatch visited the station, which operates from an empty
room at the back of Mahlahla's butchery in NU5, equipment was set up on a
makeshift table.

Radio DJs and local guests were sitting on plastic stools. The station had
no sound-proofing and no doors.

Mahlahla said: "The station creates practical opportunities for people who
have love for radio but could not get proper training."

Deputy chairperson of Mdantsane Community Radio Station Bethwell Zulu said
the news of a station trading as Mdantsane FM created a lot of confusion.

"We had a meeting with our stakeholders, including Buffalo City
Municipality and the Department of Communication and this new radio
station was mentioned, " Zulu said.

Posted by: "George Lessard" mediamentor@gmail.com themediamentor
Date: Sun Mar 22, 2009 1:47 pm ((PDT))

My passport with it's Russian visa arrived from the agency that's sending me
to Russia http://www.ceso-saco.com on Friday 20 March along with my expenses
cheque for $545 (with and average weekly income of $50 US in the Chelyabinsk
region of Russia) which should be more than enough to take care of my needs
for my two weeks there.

I leave on Friday the 27th and return to Yellowknife on Easter Sunday. Too
bad I'm not in Russia for the Eastern Orthodox celebration of Easter... I
would have liked to attend a mass there to see how they do it...

I fly from Yellowknife to Calgary via Jazz, Calgary to Frankfurt via Air
Canada, Frankfurt to Moscow via Lufthansa and overnight in Moscow at the
"Arbat" hotel http://www.president-hotel.net/arbat/?lang=Eng
(Google search result <
http://www.google.ca/search?q=arbat+hotel+moscow&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enCA220CA220&aq=t
>
or at the Moscow DME Synixis Domodedovo Airhotel http://www.airhotel.ru/
(Russian only) http://www.tomoscow.com/aeroteldom.html (depending on which
docuument is correct... I'll have to check on this)...

Then the next day I'm flying on an airline called S7 (?) (Some where I think
I saw it called Siberian Airlines) for a two and a quater hour flight to
Chelyabinsk... no word of where I'm staying in Chelyabinsk.. some times one
get put up in a hotel... other times its in a home.. should be
interesting...

I'm brining a laptop and a camera... but my new MAC BOOK PRO hard crashed
(Apple says it needs a service centre and that it might be the ram.. nearest
one is Edmonton... so it will not return before I leave.. so I'll bring my
old MAC or my PC laptop.... I bought a point and shoo digital camera to
bring but I'm rethinking that and will probably bring my full SLR kit...

I'll be trying to post ongoing updates to my Overseas Blog at
http://mediamentor-overseas.blogspot.com/
and pictures to my Flickr site at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/george-lessard/sets/72157613820810814/
and may try to post to my Facebook page at
http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Lessard/528826696
(unless they're blocked or the connection is too slow)

That's all for now...

Halifax, NS / Deadline Date: Friday, April 10, 2009

Eyelevel Gallery and HAC (the Halifax Audio Club) seek completed works for
its latest Listening Cinema project: Audio Bathhouse-an offsite audio and
video presentation in June 2009. This one night event, in tandem with the
Halifax wide Sound Bytes Festival, will open at SeaDog's Sauna & Spa to
the general public for an audio art experience like no other.

The Halifax Audio Club invites established and emerging artists to submit
completed audio and audio/video works (10 minutes or less) for
presentation in the SeaDog's Bathhouse. We encourage site-specific works,
and works that consider the audio over the visual.

Sea Dog's is an active 2-level bathhouse. The space consists of several
rooms (including 23 private rooms, a dark bondage room, a sauna, a
whirlpool, etc). The whole space is dimly lit and has a nautical theme.
The Halifax Audio Club will be renting the space for this one night event.

There are various areas to be activated (see below). The playback systems
will be fairly low tech, audio for stereo playback, and video for monitor
playback.

We seek works for the following locations:
- Audio for Dark room (no lights, includes couch and wall handcuffs)
- Audio for Sling room and Maze (darkened area with leather slings and
metal maze)
- Audio for the dry sauna (functioning wooden sauna room with two wooden
benches, approx. 6 feet by 6 feet, seats approx 8 people comfortably at a
time)
- Audio for the revolving door (metal revolving capsule, big enough for
one person)
- Video for private rooms (Many private rooms with beds receive the same
video feed to monitors. Rooms are very small, there are mirrors on the
walls and ceilings. the rooms are dimly lit.)
- Video for Group room (large flat-screen monitor with nearby couch/bed,
dimly lit area with space for approximately 15 people to view the work)
- Video only for Hot Tub - (there is a video screen beside the whirlpool.
We want video to go with sounds generated live by the functioning hot
tub!)

Seven artists will be chosen to participate and each artist will be given
a $350 screening fee.
Deadline for submissions is Friday April 10th. Please submit your
completed work on CD or DVD, 10 minutes or less in duration, with
preferred presentation space(s) to:

Growing pains: Young children, poverty and AIDS in South Africa

Radio features - free and ready-to-broadcast

Being nurtured with help of a loving caregiver helps children to build
lifelong emotional resilience. But for many children, especially those
who witness their parents and relatives die, their early years can bring
pain and suffering.

In this series of five short radio features, children, parents, carers
and experts in South Africa speak frankly about meeting the challenges
of growing up in the face of bereavement, poverty and AIDS.

The features are accompanied by full scripts, and an un-narrated version
so that the features can be placed easily within a radio programme.

1. Fledgling Years <http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26720>

High levels of poverty and HIV push many families to breaking point.
What's the impact on children? In this feature we visit an early child
development site outside Johannesburg and hear how to mend the
parent-child relationship - http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26720

Duration: 00:06:01

2. A place to grow <http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26722>

Pre-school education helps children grow holistically. But the quality
of provision is patchy - with poor neighbourhoods often missing out as
this feature from rural KwaZulu-Natal explores -

3. A family pulls together: Lungi's story
<http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26724>

Lungi Ngidi's mother died when her daughter was still at school, leaving
her future education in jeopardy and Lungi in charge of her brothers and
sisters - http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26724

4. Children left behind: the right to grieve
<http://www.panos.org.uk/?lid=26727>

Growing up without parents can be traumatic. Children and families may
need professional help to express their grief fully but there are often
not enough psychological services to support them -

Surabaya, 20 Maret 2009.
Soekarno Hatta Blok A No. 8,  pada hari Minggu 22 Maret 2009 pukul 18.00. Is it not time that the big stations/networks saw the cost of changing a community station to another frequency, and pay for all the costs (including the time of the people involved)?

3. What is the Audio/Video Edition of NGO-in-a-box?

The Audio/Video edition of NGO-in-a-Box is a toolkit that lowers the entry
level for NGOs, non-profits and media activists wanting to use audio and
video for social change. It is a collection of Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS) tools, documentation and tutorials that introduce you to
the world of FOSS and the low-cost technology that is transforming the
balance of forces in the realm of media production.

Traditionally audio and video production and distribution have been cost
prohibitive for many people, particularly for those in developing
countries. New technologies are dramatically changing that. Tactical Tech
and EngageMedia have collaborated to put together a toolkit that lowers
the entry level for organisations and individuals wanting to use audio and
video as a tool for social change. [read more]

Video
FOSS video is still in the early stages of development however there are
still many great tools that compete well with their proprietary rivals.
The selections in this toolkit cover topics such as:

* capture and editing - transferring video footage from your camera
onto your computer and editing and adding effects and transitions.
* compression and encoding - reducing the file size of your video and
converting it to appropriate formats for storage and distribution.
* DVD/VCD - ripping content from DVDs or VCDs for saving on your
computer and authoring your compilations of video for burning on
DVD/VCD media for storage or distribution.
* online distribution - distributing your video content over the
Internet allowing people to download, watch streaming video or
subscribe to video podcasts.
* video players - playing video content on a computer from a variety
of formats.

Video
Online Distribution

Vodcasting
* Video podcasting (vodcasting) is a way to subscribe to video feeds.
Each time a new video is added subscribers receive notification and
can instantly download the new video. The software listed here either
allows you to create a vodcast or to subscribe to them.
http://av.ngoinabox.org/?q=toolpage/125

Video Streaming

* Video Streaming is a way for you to create your own television
channel on the web. Video podcasting has begun to replace streaming
for creating a channnel as it doesn't need to be broadcast live and
can be available at any time. Streaming however can be great for
events that you want others to view live and in real time around the
world. You can also archive the stream and put it on the web for
later.
http://av.ngoinabox.org/?q=toolpage/59

Audio Editing and Compressing

* The tools included here enable you to work with the audio material
that you have collected or created to produce radio or music pieces.
Also listed are tools for compressing your audio piece after you have
created it for distribution.
http://av.ngoinabox.org/?q=toolpage/1

Podcasting and Online Distribution

* Distributing your audio on the internet is a great way to reach
thousands of people anywhere in the world with very little effort and
cost. You no longer need an expensive transmitter to distribute your
productions. You can use streaming - allowing users to listen like
radio, podcasting - which allows users to subscribe to shows like you
would a magazine or simply upload it onto a website for download.
Audio online is also very easy to use on your local community radio
station, creating a great complimentary distribution mechanism.
http://av.ngoinabox.org/?q=toolpage/120

Audio Streaming

* Audio streaming allows you to send out live audio over the internet.
It's a way to create your own internet radio station and is
particularly useful during events or where broadcast laws restrict you
from transmitting via radio waves.
