     RADIJOJO GOES AFRICA !

·          RADIJOJO World Children's Radio finds new partners in Sub-Saharan Africa.

·          Plans for „RADIJOJO Africa" confirmed.

·          The first children's radio bridge between Namibia and Germany raises the  international attention of governments and  of civil society

Windhoek/Berlin, May 22th -

With  yet another innovative project and a whole series  of new partnerships, Radijojo World Children's Radio Network (Radijojo)  is boosting its engagement on the African continent: Radijojo has successfully implemented the first radio bridge of children in Germany and Namibia.  Some of  the  content in 60 minutes segments produced for kids by kids included culture, school life as well as the colonial history:

Marginalized children from migrant families in the African quarter of Berlin did  some research on a street named after the German colonialist  named Luederitz. They found out about the unjust ways in which  Luederitz  had seized Namibian land and then the students  discussed  their findings with the district mayor of the Center of Berlin, Dr.  Hanke.  He agreed with them that the street should be renamed.

Nevertheless,  this process has not yet lead to a political decision,  but the kids symbolically renamed the street themselves  with a self-painted street sign made out of paper where they transformed  it from „Luederitz Street" into „NAMIBIA STREET"!

To make this a real bilateral children's radio project,  Radijojo staged the first direct call-in phone session through the Internet  between  German and Namibian children  ever organized.

Radijojo did  happen to find an excellent partner in Windhoek that contributed to the project, her name is Esther and she is a young Uitani Children's Radio reporter. She  did a presentation about her hometown and  was also quite interested in the outcome of the Luederitz' project in Germany. Her personal contribution was very impressive too,  she conducted her very own interview with Mr. Sam Nuyoma, the „father of the Namibian nation" on the same day! She referred to Mr. Nuyoma's  advice saying that she would fight  anyone who would try to recolonize her country. She had a chance to display  her happiness and excitement  when she found out that her fellow  radio kids at Uitani's Children's Radio would now  be joining the World Children's Radio Network.

This week, Thomas Roehlinger, founder and chief editor of the German based non-profit-organization presented the project to the the Namibian Minister of Education, Mr.Nangolo Mbumba, as well as to the Subregional Summit of Community Media in Windhoek:

„The reaction to our work was simply excellent. More than 20 community radios, multimedia centres, schools all across Southern Africa immediately asked for cooperation – additionally to the dozens of partnerships with Africa that we have already launched. We are overwhelmed by this huge interest in joining our initiative for the kids in Africa and all over  the world!", Mr. Roehlinger said in Windhoek after talks with officials of UNESCO,  the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), the World Association of Community Radios (AMARC) and other organizations.

As a consequence of this intense and ongoing demand, Radijojo plans to implement an African chapter to the World Children's Radio Network: RADIJOJO AFRICA.

Therefore, Radijojo is calling for international donors, governments and NGOs to support the development of RADIJOJO Africa that could be based in Windhoek or Johannesburg.

Mr Roehlinger:  „A small but effective team on the ground  of African kids working in radio can empower ten of thousands of kids  in more than 20 African countries to share and learn regularly within this global educational platform for children by children. Please give them this chance - help us to make this vision come true! "

The output of the projects and the new partnerships will subsequently be released on our freshly redesigned global website www.world-childrens-radio.net/WRN  (in the Namibia / Africa section)

and on our German main site www.radijojo.de

We would like to thank the following organizations for their support: UNESCO, MISA, AMARC Africa, Foerderband, Nord-Sued-Bruecken Foundation, the City of Berlin, Base FM and Uitani Children's Radio, Windhoek and many other friends and supporters in Africa and Europe.

National Geographic in the Field: Young Explorers Grants

<http://www.nationalgeographic.com/field/grants-programs/young-explorers.html>

Enhancing our efforts to foster the next generation of researchers,
explorers, and conservationists, National Geographic now provides seed
grants to individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 in the fields we have
a rich history of supporting. Young Explorers grants provide the
opportunity for many recipients to pursue their first experiences in the
field.

Young Explorers Grants (YEG) offer opportunities to individuals between
the ages of 18 and 25 to pursue research, conservation, and
exploration-related projects consistent with National Geographic's
existing grant programs, including: the Committee for Research and
Exploration (CRE), the Expeditions Council (EC), and the Conservation
Trust (CT).

Eligibility
The Young Explorers Grants Program supports a variety of projects—and an
age-range of applicants—that are generally not covered by other sources of
funding.

Applicants are not required to have advanced degrees. However, a record of
prior experience in the fields of research, conservation, or exploration
should be submitted as it pertains to the proposed project.

Funding is not restricted to United States citizens—foreign nationals are
invited to apply. Researchers planning work in countries abroad should
make great effort to include at least one local collaborator as part of
their team.

Where Should I Apply?
The Committee for Research and Exploration funds hypothesis-based
scientific research. Consult the CRE website for more information on the
fields of research funded.

The Conservation Trust funds innovative and applied approaches to
conservation with potential for global application. Consult the CT website
for more information on the types of projects funded.

The Expeditions Council funds exploration and adventure around the world.
Consult the EC website for more information on the types of programs
funded.

Grant Limits
Young Explorers Grants vary in amount depending on significance of the
project, though most range between US $2,000 and $5,000. National
Geographic Society funds often serve as complementary support—thus the
program encourages applicants to seek additional, concurrent funding from
other sources.

Grant Restrictions
National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs,
overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe
benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or
conferences, tuition, vacations, study abroad programs, volunteer
activities, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of
permanent field stations, or publication of research results.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society
with rights of first refusal for popular publication and other media
coverage of their findings.

Obtaining an Application Form
Applying for a Young Explorers Grant is a two-step process.

First, you must submit a pre-application form online. If your
pre-application is approved, you will be sent an email with a link and a
password giving you access to our full application online.

Before you submit a pre-application, there are a few things you should
take into consideration:

* The pre-application form can be completed in multiple sessions. You
will be allowed to save your work and complete it at another time.
* You will be asked to upload an electronic copy of your curriculum
vitae (CV) while completing the form. Instructions will be provided.
* Please make sure that your browser is configured to receive cookies.
* This system works best on Internet Explorer 5.5 and Netscape 6.0 or
higher.
* If you have any questions about the online pre-application form,
consult our Frequently Asked Questions.
* If you don't find the answer to your question, Please email the
question to the fund you are applying to: cre@ngs.org,
conservationtrust@ngs.org, or council@ngs.org. Please remember to
include Young Explorers Grant in the subject line.
*

The Young Explorers Grants Program accepts pre-applications
throughout the year. Please submit your pre-application at least
eight months prior to your field dates, at least six months for the
Expeditions Council. If your application is approved—a decision
which takes about eight weeks—the relevant grant program will send
you an email with a link to the full application online. The names
of three academic or professional references and a curriculum vitae
are to be included with the full application.

THAILAND
Internet censorship to be followed by censorship of radio and TV

Reporters Without Borders is alarmed by a government announcement on
14 May that it will introduce new regulations for community radio
stations and cable and satellite TV stations aimed at controlling
programme content. Broadcasters would be required to seek permission
for each programme being aired, the government said.

"The adoption of these regulations would deal a fatal blow to free
expression in Thailand, which is already heavily restricted on the
Internet," Reporters Without Borders said. "The government will have
the power to ban programmes that question their policies and
legitimacy. We urge the authorities to scrap this plan."

Sathit Wongnongtoey, the minister in charge of the prime minister's
office, said the regulations would enable the authorities to take
action against any broadcaster airing content deemed to undermine
democracy. They would be enforced even-handedly with both "red-
shirt" (anti-government) and "yellow shirt" (pro-government)
broadcasters, Sathit said.

"Once the regulations take effect, any broadcast station airing
content deemed to be politically incendiary will not be allowed to
operate," he added.

The communication ministry has been censoring the Internet strictly
since January, ridding it of all content that is deemed to be
"politically incendiary" or to "attack the king." Suwicha Thakor, for
example, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 3 April on a lese
majeste charge for posting content critical of the monarchy online.

-------------------

THAILANDE

projet", a déclaré l'organisation.

autorisée à opérer", a déclaré Sathit Wongnongtoey.

Voice over IP

http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/software/page4824.cfm?cg=telegreen&sg=blogweek4

[excerpt]

When we needed a personal touch, Voice over IP (also called VoIP, IP
Telephony, and Internet telephony) came in handy and kept costs down. VoIP
technology enables the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or
any other IP network. With VoIP, eRiders could chat online with each other
or with managers without incurring the expensive long-distance charges of
regular phone calls. VoIP allows users to place calls to traditional
landline phones, as well as to those with a VoIP account, a computer, and a
microphone headset.

eRiders typically use the VoIP service
Skype<http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/downloads/internet/page10380.cfm>
, but there are other services available. To learn about other VoIP tools,
or about VoIP technology in general, read TechSoup's article Ditch Your
Telephone for VoIP<http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4776.cfm>
.

Ditch Your Telephone for VoIP Make free, or nearly free, phone calls over
the Internethttp://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4776.cfm

[excerpt]

Although in recent years the cost of long-distance phone calls has decreased
in many parts of the world, phone rates are often still prohibitively
expensive for nonprofits, especially those working internationally.
Communicating online is an alternative, yet can lack the efficiency -- and
effectiveness -- of a phone call. A possible compromise? Voice over Internet
Protocol ( VoIP or Voice over IP), a technology that enables you to make
calls over the Internet for significantly less than the cost of a
traditional phone call, or even for free.

Organizations most likely to benefit from VoIPs are those that need to make
lots of long-distance phone calls, particularly abroad. This includes
organizations that work internationally, but could also apply to those with
staff in other parts of the country or abroad. Small nonprofits and NGOs
that already have computers and an Internet connection, or whose staff work
remotely because there is no office, could also benefit, even if they are
just making local calls.

Depending on the service they choose, most organizations already have much
(if not all) of what they need to make use of VoIP technology. Any
additional required software is often free or inexpensive. However, there
may be extra costs for hardware and services, meaning that Internet phone
calls aren't cost effective for everyone. See below for more information.

Community Radio Training Workshop
Organised by Community Radio Forum
at Dahanu, Maharashtra
July 1 - 4 2009

Community Radio Forum-India is a registered association of community radio
broadcasters, researches and advocates in India and its members have played
a significant role in shaping and drafting the new CR policy currently in
place. CRF believes in the power of community radio, is committed to
democratization of India's airwaves and works to enable community
organizations to set up their own Community Radio Station. The CRF, being a
membership based organization, is the only representative body of CR
practitioners in India

CRF is organising a 4 day workshop in July 2009 (1 - 4 ) targeted primarily
at communities and groups who have already applied for a CR license and are
in the preparatory phase of setting up a CRS. However, groups considering

Aims and Objectives of workshop

1. To demystify technological aspects of CRS
2. To understand the various aspects of content and programming required to
run a CRS

The 4-day Workshop will discuss various options for studio as well as
transmission equipment, aiming to provide a clear understanding and

Besides transmission, both hardware as well as software options for radio
