David Barsamian, founder of Alternative Radio

Amidst the current global crisis facing major media organizations, with
newspaper and magazine offices closing within the larger global financial
storm, alternative media projects on the radio and online are alive and
flourishing, with increasing numbers of people turning to such outlets for
their news on the world.

The National Campus and Community Radio Conference (NCRC), taking place here
June 7-13, focuses on the current state of independent media, especially
community/campus radio, and brings community radio delegates from across the
country into an open discussion.

Dating back to the 1980s, Alternative Radio, founded by Armenian-American
journalist and author David Barsamian, has been a shining example of an
independent media initiative that wields international scope while
maintaining fierce independence and strong ties to social movements.
Barsamian is the keynote speaker at the NCRC, offering a historical
perspective on the current state of independent media.

"Radio is uniquely positioned to deliver intellectual content, particularly
because a listener is not distracted by the image, as in TV or the
Internet," says Barsamian. "I think that for ideas and serious talk, radio
is the singular medium that can offer a real ability for listeners to really
delve into the profound issues of our time."

The NCRC is the largest gathering of community and campus radio workers in
the country. In recent years, it has seen the development of Groundwire, the
first national grassroots news program

broadcasting on community radio across Canada.

"Viewers of television and readers of print media have been disappearing in
droves in recent years, and their advertising dollars with them," outlines
Barsamian. "People are turning to alternative media in increasing numbers -
particularly among young people there is a real disgust towards corporate
media, and many of the most popular new media projects are created by young
people who are inventing new media languages."

Radio Lab Workshop
Pre-registration required $25 materials fee
free103point9 Radio Labs provides workshop participants with technical skills and contextual background to consider and utilize the transmission spectrum for creative expression. This workshop will address four main topics: the history of broadcasting; how transmitters work; online transmission tools; and transmission arts as a creative medium. Participants will join Max Goldfarb (free103point9), Andy Gunn (free103point9 & Prometheus Radio Project), and Tom Roe (free103point9) for a transmitter building workshop. Each participant will complete the workshop with a low-power FM radio transmitter of their own. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. Please contact transmitter@universityoftrash.org to secure your spot.

Join transmission artists neuroTransmitter, Tom Roe; engineer Andy Gunn and others for an informal discussion about their work and issues of free speech, free space, and the right to the airwaves.

Angel Nevarez (neuroTransmitter,) Radio Ruido, and Tom Roe broadcast DJ sets from Max Goldfarb's M49 radio transmission truck to boomboxes setup around the university. Beer will be available.

The Right to the Airwaves is a public program of the exhibition The University of Trash.
About University of Trash
From April through July this year, New York based artist Michael Cataldi and London based artist Nils Norman will transform the Sculpture Center into The University of Trash, an exciting experiment in alternative city building and design. Working collaboratively and collectively with students, local organizations, activists, and academics, the artists will gather and investigate research material related to the activities of 1970s countercultural "Appropriate Technology" movement, adventure playgrounds, "Non-plan", emergency and low-impact design, and the vernacular of makeshift housing in 3D form. The result will be the creation of a crazy complex of interconnected architectural spaces, pavilions and walkways from readymade, recycled and found materials. On view May 10 - August 3, the exhibition will run parallel to an extensive series of related workshops, talks and film screenings.

free103point9 has set up a temporary online radio station for The University of Trash show. It is curated by New York based artist Michael Cataldi and London based artist Nils Norman, and features live performances and workshops on Saturdays. Tune in around the clock at:

In this edition, we are in Dhaka, Bangladesh where a sudden rise in the

operation of community radio stations is expected after the government,

for the first time, came up with a progressive and pro-radio broadcasting

law in March 2008 that allows ownership of such radio stations to the

local community. Bangladesh is the second country after Nepal, among South

Asian countries, to make such a move. So far, 116 community radio stations

are waiting their final go ahead to be on air. (15:00)

The Big One

Kathmandu remains one of the most vulnerable cities in the world due to an impending big earthquake. Seismological records show that big earthquakes have occurred every 75 years in Kathmandu. But it is not just the magnitude of the earthquake but the country's poor preparedness that is increasingly putting the lives of the capital's two million at risk. In this edition of Development Dilemma, we will focus on the earthquake risks in Kathmandu and what action should the country take to prepare for the big one which has been long overdue. Naresh Newar moderates this session with experts working on earthquake disaster reduction. Robert Piper is the head of the United Nations in Nepal; Amod Dixit is the executive director of Nepal Society for Earthquake Technology or NSET; Pitambar Aryal, is the director for Disaster Management Department at the Nepal Red Cross Society.
