accepted wisdom that today the West is obsessed with China as never

"... Newspapers, journals and periodicals were all well-established media
forms by the 1930s but the decade was a time of technological change when
both the radio and the newsreels became forms of mass communication to
stand alongside, complement and often rival the newspapers. China's first
wireless station — the Osborn Radio Station, known alternatively as XRO
and the Radio Corporation of China — had opened in 1923 in Shanghai. It
transmitted from studios on the roof of the Dollar Building on the Bund
with an initial 65-minute programme of classical and light music as well
as some news. The station estimated that there were 500 wireless sets in
the International Settlement though, to boost the audience, XRO's signal
was transmitted to Tianjin and other major areas where foreigners lived.
The station was owned and established by an American journalist called E.
G. Osborn and a wealthy overseas Chinese. Sun Yat-sen declared himself a
fan of the new media but there simply weren't enough listeners. Despite
moving the studios to the more prestigious roof garden of the Wing On
Department Store on Nanking Road and trying to organise live concerts, the
station failed after a few months due to a combination of precious few
listeners, government distrust and censorship.

Second Chance

Nearly 19 years have passed since the Bhutanese refugees have been living in the bamboo camps in Nepal. A whole new generation was born right here in the camps. As the population grows and gets older, there seems very little hope of the Bhutanese refugees being repatriated back to their homes. The UN with support of International Organization for Migration, IOM, and the western countries, especially the US, Canada, Australia and four other European countries have started a resettlement process to help refugees choose to live anywhere they want in those countries. But as thousands of them leave the camp, we wonder what kind of future holds for them?

The next AIRtime Fellowship program deadline will be July 1, 2009.
The AIRtime program provides artists with valuable assistance with which to concentrate on new transmission works and conduct research about the genre using free103point9's resource library and equipment holdings. AIRtime Fellowships are awarded to approximately three artists each year. Fellows present their work in conjunction with WGXC, in Greene and Columbia Counties, and our city-based programs at the Ontological Theater at St. Mark's Church in Manhattan. Fellows receive an honorarium, and technical and administrative support from free103point9 staff. Participating artists are encouraged to archive recordings and other digital media with the free103point9 Transmission Art Archive project.

free103point9 defines "Transmission Arts" as a conceptual umbrella that unites a community of artists and audiences interested in transmission ideas and tools. This genre encompasses a diversity of practices and media working with the idea of transmission or the physical properties of the electromagnetic spectrum. Transmission art is generally a participatory live-art or time-based art, and often manifests as radio art, video art, light sculpture, installation, and performance.

CFYT 106.9 is a community radio station operating in Dawson City, Yukon
Territory, Canada.

We currently broadcast 3 days a week on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Our
programming schedule grows with the population of Dawson City during the
summer season. We provide a widely varied range of programming representing
Dawson's unique population. In addition to regular programming, CFYT offers
special broadcasts of community events, television broadcasts of locals
events and festivals (such as the famous Dawson City Music Festival) and are
currently working towards our remote broadcasting capabilities.

Our radio station is a non-profit community organization run by the Dawson
City Community Radio Society, a volunteer board of 7 members, 30 + volunteer
DJs, and countless other volunteers and supporters. We reveive funding from
the Yukon Territorial Government, Yukon Lotteries, The City of Dawson, and
the Klondike Vistors Association to maintain our equipment and operations.

The cfyt.ca blog/website is an emergent way of increasing our visibility and
listenership, as well as improving accessibility of CFYT radio schedules,
contact information, and events. The site will allow DJs, volunteers, board
members, and listeners to communicate and exchange– contributions and
feedback are encouraged. As the site develops and expands, we strive to
offer audio, video and more here at cfyt.ca.

Starting on July 1, the A.P. will deliver work by the Center for Public
Integrity, the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University,
the Center for Investigative Reporting, and ProPublica to the 1,500
American newspapers that are A.P. members, which will be free to publish
the material.

The A.P. called the arrangement a six-month experiment that could
later be broadened to include other investigative nonprofits, and to
serve its nonmember clients, which include broadcast and Internet
outlets.

"It's something we've talked about for a long time, since part of our
mission is to enable our members to share material with each other," said
Sue Cross, a senior vice president of The A.P. She said the development in
2006 of an Internet-based system for members to receive A.P. material made
it easier to do that kind of sharing, and to offer new products like the
investigative service.

As they sharply reduce their staffs, many newspapers have cut back on
investigations or given them up entirely. When there are barely enough
reporters to cover the daily news from the local courthouse and the school
board, it is harder to justify assigning someone to an in-depth project
that might take weeks or months.

At the same time, independent groups doing investigative journalism have
grown in number and size, fueled by foundations and wealthy patrons, and
are offering their work to newspapers, magazines, television and radio
news programs, and news Web sites. ProPublica was created in 2007 and the
Investigative Reporting Workshop in 2008. The Center for Investigative
Reporting has operated for more than three decades, and is doubling in
size. The four groups combined have more than 50 professional
journalists...."
