The BBC World Service Trust is looking for a Country Director to run its
operation in Nepal. The successful candidate will have experience in both
media and international development. You will need to demonstrate a good
understanding of the specific issues facing Nepal, particularly with
reference to governance and health - the two themes in which the Trust is
currently working in the country.

The Trust is the international charity of the BBC. Our record in Nepal is
one of innovation. You will have the skills to lead an award-winning
local team to build on successes in creating programmes with impact for
the people of Nepal.

[creative-radio] Honduras: In new wave of violence against media , de facto regime “reaps what it sowed”

Reporters Without Borders condemns the new wave of violence against the
media that took place last week, while Honduras appeared to be further
than ever from resolving the crisis resulting from President Manuel
Zelaya's removal in a coup on 28 June.

"The de facto government has again illustrated its concept of press
freedom by pitting soldiers and police against news media that are
critical of the coup," Reporters Without Borders said. "The attacks on
community and education media are yet another sign of the deterioration in
the general press freedom situation since 28 June."

The press freedom organisation added: "The de facto government is reaping
what it sowed when it launched a war on the media at the time of the coup.
We urge the activists of the National Front for Resistance to the Coup not
to use physical violence against media that back the de facto government
or the employees of these media."

Lidieth Diaz of Radio Globo - one of the few remaining news media still
critical of the de facto government - said she was denied access to the
presidential palace on 13 August on the personal instructions of de facto
President Micheletti when she want to cover a ceremony in which Micheletti
was participating. She was allowed in several hours later after the office
of the human rights ombudsman intervened.

Radio Progreso, a Jesuit-run educational radio station, said reporter
Gustavo Cardoza was attacked by police while covering the eviction of
Zelaya supporters from their housing in Choloma, in the northeastern
department of Cortés, on 14 August. Cardoza said he was attacked and
beaten while a policeman pointed a gun at him.

Witnesses confirmed that six officials hit him several times in the head
as he lay motionless on the ground. He was taken to a police station and
held for several hours until lawyers from the National Front for
Resistance to the Coup interceded.

During the same operation, police manhandled photographer Julio Umaña of
the daily Tiempo and confiscated his camera although he had just shown his
press accreditation. Tiempo said other members of its staff have been
attacked while covering recent demonstrations in support of the ousted
president.

Soldiers backed by police arrested Alfredo López, the head of Radio Coco
Dulce, a community radio station, during a demonstration by the National
Front for Resistance to the Coup on 12 August in Tegucigalpa and released
later that night, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters
(AMARC) said.

CMFE supports the campaign for the increase of the UK Community Radio Fund

The Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE) has written an open letter to the British Prime Minister, Gordon
Brown, and the Secretary of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport,
Ben Bradshaw, asking them to support the sustainability and growth of
community radio in the United Kingdom by substantially increasing the
resources of the Community Radio Fund.

British citizens and residents have time to sign the letter via the
Prime Minister's e-petition page until 24 September 2009 and CMFE his
encouraging its eliglible members to sign it to support the sector's
campaign.

In the open letter, CMFE's President Pieter de Wit stated
'CMFE is encouraging the British Government to support the community
media sector with the sums needed to put it on a sustainable long term
footing and underlines that these are modest by comparison with the
governments separate proposals for investment in local news consortia,
the objectives of which can partly be met by the provision of news and
information services on community radio stations'.

'CMFE is also aware of that the Department of Culture Media and Sport is
currently conducting a review into the Community Radio Order 2004.
Alongside that review must be a serious commitment to support the
sustainability and development of community radio and its continuing
delivery of social and economic benefit, by substantially increasing the
government's public spending contribution to the Community Radio Fund'.

Where else can you hear programming by and about sex-workers, psychiatric
survivors, independent artists, ethnic communities and other voices that
mainstream radio doesn't include.

So, it was news to me when I heard about the drama threatening another of
Toronto's alternative radio stations, the University of Toronto's CIUT.

While infighting, lawsuits and arrests led to dead air at Ryerson's once
progressive CKLN, the U of T's community radio station was getting the
boot with no appropriate home in sight. Lucky for CIUT, the boot turned
out to be a major upgrade.

CIUT is moving into a $1.3 million renovated space at Hart House this
month once construction is complete. The station will occupy a section of
the first floor and all of the third floor.

"We knew one day we'd be asked to move," says Brian Burchell, CIUT's
station manager for a decade. The Rotman School of Business is expanding
and taking over the Victorian building that CIUT aired from for most of
its existence. It was a long fight to find another appropriate space for
the forty-year old radio station. At one point, the university offered the
basement of one of its off-campus buildings beside the offices of
custodial staff. Burchell wasn't thrilled.

Then Hart House entered the picture. The campus' commuter student space,
known for its library-like quietness, wants to increase its traffic and
relevance to campus life and the surrounding community. Community radio,
say hello to the archery club.
