[creative-radio] Australian Community radio gets online music catalogue

Community radio gets online music catalogue

Digital Media - Australasia

Community radio stations will have access to online playlists from today as
part of a project initiated by the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project
...
The new service, AirIT, provides access to fully customised Australian
music playlists, with the aim to easily spread Australian music throughout
Australian Community radio. The Music is delivered to stations either as
digital file downloads or in CD format.

Music publishers and community radio stations can register here
http://www.amrap.org/airit/

<http://www.digital-media.net.au/article/community-radio-gets-online-music-catalogue/497925.aspx>

AirIT is:

An Australian music catalogue

A CD and digital audio download distribution system

A community radio social network

Exclusively available to Australian community radio stations
.

AirIT Compliments the promotional releases sent to Music Directors and
stations by making feature tracks available to broadcasters who control
their own playlists.

AirIT enables labels and artist representatives to get music to more
stations to inspire national impact through community radio.

AirIT enables likeminded stations to share music discoveries, and skilled
broadcasters and Music Directors to advise and mentor others.

The AMARC Int'l BoD will meet in Paris on November 11th.

As usual, I have been asked to prepare a report on community radio
activity in the US and Canada.

Please send me comments, or BRIEF reports that I will compile into a
report for the board. Please bear in mind to keep an "overview" approach
to your reports, as local issues will not be as well known to the
international body.

Links to websites are useful and welcome.

[creative-radio] Request for support to community radio stations in West Java, Indonesia

---------------------------- Original Message ----------------------------
Subject: [Asiapacific-general] Request for support to community radio
stations in West Java, Indonesia
From: "Suman Basnet" <suman_basnet@asiapacific.amarc.org>
Date: Thu, September 10, 2009 01:37
To: "AMARC_AP_General_List" <asiapacific-general@lists.amarc.org>
----------------------------------------------------------

Dear friends and colleagues:

As you know, a devastating earthquake has hit West Java Province of
Indonesia. We have been sharing information about the situation of community
radio stations in this list. According to the latest reports more than 5,000
houses and hundreds school buildings have been severely damaged, and more
than 270,000 people are compelled to live as refugees.

As reported earlier, a number of community radio stations have been damaged
too. As West Java gradually recovers from the initial shocks and comes
together to rebuild, its vitally important to get the damaged and out of
operation community radio stations up and running again so that the huge
information gap can be filled in. The sub-district (local government) of
Java province has requested community radio stations of that area to support
relief work by acting as emergency radio service. AMARC members in the
affected region have identified a number of equipment and technical support
that is urgently needed. The list of the most essential equipment include
transmitters, computers, UPS, microphones, headsets, power-supply units,
radio receivers, and mixers.

I would like to request you to extend support to our friends in Java in
whatever way you can - spare equipment and/or monetary support are welcome.

The Association of Community Radio Broadcasters of Indonesia (JRKI -
Jaringan Radio Komunitas Indonesia) has appointed the following as contact
persons. Please feel free to write to them to receive the complete list of
equipment as well as for guidance on how and where to send your support.
Please copy your emails to suman_basnet@asiapacific.amarc.org and
iprakoso@ygy.centrin.net.id.

1. Adi Rumansyah, JRKI (Community Radio Association of Indonesia), email:
kaulathea@yahoo.com and his cell phone: +6285 220 387225

2. Gani Rachman (Gagan) from West Java JRKI, email: ga2n2004@yahoo.com
and his cell phone: +6281 320 527571

Thanking you for your support and with warmest regards, Suman

Politics of Climate Change

Political debates still continue to overshadow much of the global climate change issue and we still have a long way to focus on how to reduce the vulnerabilities of the affected population. This is the same in South Asia where governments have still failed to reach a consensus on many contentious issues. In September, senior government officials from South Asia met during what was supposed to be a significant regional conference in Kathmandu hosted by the Nepali government with the support of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, DFID and Embassy of Denmark. Panos Radio South Asia spoke to Jarullah Mansoori from Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency, Bangladeshi Parliamentarian Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Maldivian Minister for Housing, Transport and Environment Mohamed Aslam, and Nepali Parliamentarian Sunil Babu Pant. We try to understand their political perspectives on climate change agenda and asked them how prepared their countries were for the much talked about conference in Copenhagen in December.

[creative-radio] US: Low-Power Radio’s Voice Rises

Low-Power Radio's Voice Rises

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/08/us/08radio.html?_r=2

A bill now before Congress, and considered by some low-power radio advocates
to have a good chance of passage this year, would potentially double the
number of licensed, low-power stations from about 800 now to perhaps 1,600
or more.

At the same time, technology is shifting the boundaries and definitions of
what it means to be local, and even what it means to be radio. Internet
streaming and digital wireless reception are combining in ways that could
allow almost any station, even one broadcast from a front porch, to be heard
anywhere in the world from the next generation of hand-held devices and
smartphones.

A kind of "aha" moment on that front arrived for Mr. Johnston earlier this
year when a surgeon in Jacksonville, Fla., who listens to KXZI in his
operating room via the Internet, signed up to become a financial sponsor.
Mr. Johnston has been streaming live since 2004, shortly after his station
went on the air.

"My nurses know to have it going when I come in," said Dr. Steve Felger, who
said he likes the station's quirky musical mix — bluegrass, jazz, folk and
blues — and the feel of rural Montana that he has come to love through his
vacations there.

And the low-power noncommercial stations that have emerged in the last
decade are nothing if not local. One station in St. Paul broadcasts to
the Hmong
community <http://www.hmongradio.tv/>. A station in Woodburn, Ore., focuses
on the interests of farm workers <http://www.pcun.org/kpcn-radio>.
Many stations have a religious bent. Mr. Johnston's station is in fact
licensed to his church — federal licensing required a nonprofit organization
to sign on — but the congregation's leaders do not insist on any religious
programming and have given him carte blanche to play the music he loves, he
said.
