[creative-radio] How do you sell your non-profit it 30 seconds?

The Ask

by ben on September 22, 2009 more at http://www.jhr.ca/ben/

http://www.jhr.ca/ben/?p=738

How do you sell your non-profit it 30 seconds?

It's a lot tougher than it sounds. I find myself constantly changing my
pitch based on who I'm talking to, what my specific ask is, how long I have
to talk and, to be honest, my mood.
[image: Lincoln at Gettysburg (circled). Two minutes and the rest is
history.]

Lincoln at Gettysburg (circled). Two minutes and the rest was history.

But there are a number of constants that I try to remember, including:

1) Use simple language. The number one mistake people make is to explain
their work in complicated industry terms. Don't. Use simple, easy to
understand language. You never want someone to walk away thinking "what the
hell was that person saying?" You don't come off as smart if you confuse
people with industry terms, etc. Studies show that, on average, people
perceive others as smarter when they use less and more simple words to get
their point across.

2) It's about the end product. Talk concisely about the end result you hope
to have. How many kids you will save. How many people you will feed. Avoid
the temptation to ramble on about you. Don't talk about how you are starting
this great organization because of some experience you had last year. blah,
blah, blah. Get to the point!

3) Be pithy. You only have a few moments to sell your wares. Tell them how
you are going to address a significant problem in as few and finely
constructed words as possible. The Gettysburg Address was only two minutes
long.

4) Know exactly what you want from the person you're talking to. Do you want
them to donate? Sign up for your newsletter? Volunteer? You've worked hard
at getting someone excited about your work…don't leave them high and
dry–give them something they can do to help!

5) Practice. Practice. Practice. Write down your 10 second, 30 second and 2
minute pitches. Think them through. Test them with friends and family that
will give honest and constructive advice. Use them. See what works and
doesn't work. Constantly improve.

The ask, or the pitch, is perhaps the single most important element for
success. It will determine if people follow you or make fun of you. It will
determine if people donate or not. It will determine how people perceive you
as a leader of your organization. Work on it. Perfect it.

[creative-radio] Re: British Library releases 23, 700 rare audio tracks online

Another great source of traditional music are the enthomusicollegy
collections of universitiies... Back in the early 1980s when I was
working for an Inuit radio and television network in the Nunavik (Arctic
Quebec, Canada) region, I spent a couple of weeks making copies of the
interviews and music recordings enthomusicologists had made of Inuit
elders. I was allowed to make those copies simply because I asked and
because I was doing so to return those sound recordings back to the people
of the region where they were originally recorded...

So I heartly suggest that community radio stations get in touch with the
ethomusicology departments /sections of university anthopology departments
around the world and see if they have any recordings from your region of
the world... In my case... the department's policy was to
a) leave copies of recordings with the communities in which they were
recorded...
and because they knew that those copies were often lost... it was also
their policy to
b) allow representatives of those communities to make other copies to
replace those originally left... at no cost...

Searching "ethnomusicology recordings" on Google gives about 1,290,000 hits

[creative-radio] Raipur agri university gets clearance to start CR station

Raipur agri university gets clearance to start CR station ...
By RnMTeam

MUMBAI: The Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya Raipur, Chhattisgarh has
signed a Grant of Permission Agreement for establishing, maintaining and
operating a Community Radio Station with the information and broadcasting
ministry.

A Letter of Intent had been issued to the institute after recommendations
of Inter Ministerial Committee and seeking requisite clearances from
various Ministries. The Community Radio Station is expected to be
operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the
number of CRS will increase to 54 in the country.

Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV) aims to help development in
agriculture and allied fields by increasing quality manpower, providing
relevant technological solutions, piloting their fields uses and
supporting other related activities. The university has the objective to
at least double the crop yields in the region with appropriate increase in
livestock husbandry, fishery and agro forestry.

To make its mission possible the university strives continuously to
provide quality education in the areas of agriculture and allied Sciences,
to undertake basic, applied and adoptive research and to develop the most
appropriate solutions and technologies that are relevant to the area and
which can elevate the socio- economic conditions of the people. Through
the Community Radio Station, IGKV also aims to provide direct and indirect
education and technological support to the public in general and to
farmers in the area in particular to improve agriculture productivity and
the economic situation of the rural people. Commercial potential of the
agriculture sector in the area would also be facilitated.

Media watchdog, the Media Institute for Southern Africa – Zimbabwe, has
expressed grave concern over the upsurge of hate speech against the
private media and perceived opponents, by members of ZANU PF and the state
controlled media. Earlier this week army commander, Lieutenant-General
Phillip Valerio Sibanda, berated foreign based Zimbabwean radio stations,
accusing them of being at war with Zimbabwe and urged the military to
'guard against them'. This has been widely seen as meaning that
journalists broadcasting into Zimbabwe are legitimate military targets
because they threaten the state.
