Community Radio for Sustainable development and Good Governance

February 20-23, 2010 - Bangalore, India

The 2nd AMARC Asia Pacific Regional Conference has been postponed
to*February 20-23, 2010
*. The event was scheduled to take place from 10-13 October 2009. The
location of the conference remains unchanged and will be held in Bangalore,
India. The organisers made this decision to enable more people to
participate in the conference so that the community radio movement in the
region is consolidated and strengthened.

The 2ND AMARC Asia Pacific Conference : Community radio for Sustainable
Development and Good Governance, will bring together community radio
broadcasters, activists, academics, policy makers, and representatives of
the donor community and governments to review the development of the
community broadcasting in the Asia Pacific region in the last 4 years. It
will take a careful look at thematic areas of development such as the
empowerment of women within the CR sector, the role of community
broadcasting in peace building, it's role in the face of global climate
change and at times of natural disasters as well as for poverty eradication.
The regional conference will address practical issues such as capacity
building in areas of management, technology, community participation,
monitoring and evaluation, media convergence, and networking and the
conference will recommend steps that will ensure the way forward for the CR
sector in the region. The 2nd Regional Assembly of AMARC Asia-Pacific will
be held in conjunction with the Regional Conference.

which lets users upload and edit multiple audio tracks.

Using Myna, users can either upload prerecorded audio clips or record new
ones instantly, then add sound effects to them.

Through our interactions with the artists on Worth1000.com, we realized
that while many people wanted to use digital editing software, it was very
inaccessible:

* The costs were prohibitive (and many people didn't want to risk
installing a virus by pirating).
* The interface was too bloated with rarely-used features to make
learning it easy.
* You actually needed to install the programs on a machine with
specifications that complied with the program and suffer through any
unwanted DRM malware that might also come with the software.
We have our roots in the grassroots hobbyists community. We are
artists ourselves and know that there are so many other potential
creators out there like us... all they need are accessible tools.

This was passed on to us at Prometheus Radio Project by a soon to be new
Community Radio Station in Fairbanks, Alaska. They are looking for an
intern or radio enthusiast who would be interested in helping to build their
station both technically and communally. They can offer room and board,
some spending money, but mostly a great Alaskan adventure in a great
community. Fairbanks Open Radio is a small group of people who have come
together to establish a progressive community radio station in Fairbanks,
Alaska. They have written the following announcement and hopefully you can
share it with anyone you think might be interested.

Help Wanted: Person interested in bringing a radio station into the world.

We are Fairbanks Open Radio -- an FM non-commercial educational community
radio station (soon to be), located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

For two years now our board has been working towards creating a progressive
radio station. We have made great strides and our parent organization, the
Alaska Federation for Community Self Reliance is actually very close to
being being granted a license by the FCC [probably within six months]. Our
board has jumped through most of the bureaucratic hoops and after a lot of
work, we expect to score highest out of nine applicants in the FCC's point
system ranking. So the groundwork has been laid and we will have two years
from the date we are issued the license to bring the station on the air.

All current members of our board are working at their jobs too much to be
able to devote the necessary time and energy needed to really get the ball
rolling. We believe there is enough community support to make this nearly
all volunteer station work. There are many people who have contributed and
will contribute to the effort but we need a person with energy, drive,
stamina, and focus, to coordinate their efforts.

Fairbanks Open Radio is looking for a person with energy, organizational
skills and a commitment to citizen media. This is an opportunity push back
against the overly loud voices of AM talk radio that have inundated our
communities. .

This will be an adventure, an opportunity to build a progressive station
from the ground up. Fairbanks Open Radio can't offer much money, but we can
provide a place to stay, money for food and transportation. This job would
not be for the money. A better world yes, making a difference yes. Amazing
adventure yes. Radio experience would be helpful but not necessary.

We are pleased to announce a call for applications for the PhD in Human
Rights and Peace Studies (International Program) and the MA in Human Rights
(International Program), Mahidol University , Thailand.

The PhD in Human Rights and Peace Studies is the only PhD program of its
kind in Asia, while the MA is the longest running graduate degree program in
human rights in Asia. These programs offer a unique opportunity to engage in
depth with the highly important issues of human rights and peace in the
world today. The objectives of the programs are to produce graduates with
excellent research skills and thorough theoretical and conceptual knowledge
of these fields, and who are able to apply this knowledge to the field.

The application form can be downloaded from the homepage of the Center for
Human Rights Studies and Social Development at www.humanrights-mu.org. The
applications will be reviewed twice a year: November 15, 2009 and January
31, 2010 for the academic year beginning in June, 2010. Prospective students
are strongly encouraged to apply by November 15, 2009 in order to allow time
to arrange financial support for study.

We hereby invite eligible candidates to apply for the PhD in Human Rights
and Peace Studies and MA in Human Rights. In addition, we would appreciate

The potential solutions that renewable energy resources can provide in
solving the world's energy problems will be presented by scientists and
researchers at the ISES Solar World Congress (SWC) 2009 at the Sandton
Convention Centre, Johannesburg from 11 – 14 October 2009.

The ISES SWC 2009 will not only focus on global issues but will clearly
reflect significantly on Africa, while also paying increased attention to
environmental and social responsibility issues, global warning and climate
change. The Congress will address, in particular, the role that the
renewable energy resources can play in the sustainable development of poor
and rural communities in Africa.

First and foremost will be the use of various new technologies that can
convert the abundance of solar energy on the continent into electricity to
boost much-needed economic development, which relies heavily on energy
supplies. Presentations will include the latest research and technological
advances in these conversion processes.

"Our continent's potential to be one of the biggest users of renewable
energy should not be underestimated," said Jon Adams, Chairperson of the
conference steering committee and member of SESSA. Therefore, the timing of
this event on the African continent is seen as very appropriate. "In most
places in Africa photovoltaic systems are the only source of providing light
to those infamous two billion people that live on less that $1 a day and
without access to electricity," Adams continued.

Top international scientists and researchers will share their latest
findings and innovations with peers and the energy industry. Presentations
will cover a diverse range of themes such as Resource Assessment, Solar
Heating and Cooling, Solar Electricity, Solar Buildings, and Solar Energy &
Society.

The Congress programme is still being finalized, but it already holds
promises of a good balance between science and research with a generous
touch of current affairs and controversy. High profile national and
international speakers will address the most recent and current topics in
the sustainable energy field.

Another speaker who is expected to attract wide attention is Prof. Vivian
Alberts of South Africa, who will discuss his reasons for moving his
enterprise to Germany. A panel discussion on concentrating solar power and
Eskom's technology choices is bound to attract considerable interest from
governments and industry in the southern African region.

The recent announcement in South Africa of the Renewable Energy Feed-in
Tariff (Refit) has created quite a buzz in the industry and it is expected
that the pros and cons of Refit and the level of the tariffs will be hotly
debated during the congress. Dr. Hermann Scheer who first introduced the
Feed-in Tariff into the German Parliament will also be one of the keynote
speakers.

"The above examples represent just a small sample of the level of debate
that can be expected at the Congress. We will make more information
available about the programme as invited speakers confirm their
participation," so Adams.

ISES SWC 2009 key objective are to:

- ensure a sustainable energy future
- promote and increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency
- promote the use of renewable energy resources to positively impact on
the quality of life for future generations
- development of future opportunities for the use of renewable energy in
Africa
- jointly seek solutions which are consistent with the principles of
sustainability - affordability, environmentally sound and socially
acceptable .

Parallel to this Congress, SESSA will also promote the interest of the trade
and the public by introducing a Renewable Energy Expo, a trade exhibition.
The theme of the Expo is *Efficient; Alternative; Sustainable, * and it will

resources and products, services and developments. The Expo will showcase
the industrial and domestic use of new technologies and inventions that will
be of interest to the business sector and the public at large. SESSA

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting seeks an intern for spring 2010,
preferably starting the week of January 3, 2010. We are especially
interested in web-savvy applicants eager to get the word out about our
international reporting projects to as many people as possible - through
social networking platforms, online media, campus networks, special events,
and other avenues.

With the aim of increasing traffic to our reporting projects and expanding
the debate around these international issues, the intern's main duties will
include:
• maintenance of our website
• maintenance of our online profiles and channels (including YouTube
Channel)
• outreach to the online world, including blogs, social networking sites and
new media tools
• compilation of newsletters
• efforts to increase online traffic and expand newsletter subscription base

• assistance with event coordination

Not required but desirable: familiarity with HTML, familiarity with the
blogosphere, and experience with increasing web traffic through campaigns
such as Google Adwords and social networking sites. Applicants should also
have an interest in, and some familiarity with, current international

Elliot Madison, 41, from Queens, had his home raided and was put on
$30,000 (£19,000) bail after he and Michael Wallschlaeger, 46, were
tracked to the Carefree Inn motel in Pittsburgh during the summit on 24
and 25 September.

The pair were found sitting in front of a bank of laptops and emergency
frequency radio scanners. They were wearing headphones and microphones and
had many maps and contact numbers in the room.

Official police documents allege the two men used Twitter messages to
contact protesters at the summit "and to inform the protesters and groups
of the movements and actions of law enforcement".

The FBI said that as well as the computers and radio scanning equipment
discovered at the motel, they also confiscated from Madison's home 11 gas
masks, five pairs of goggles and test tubes and beakers. They said they
also took away anarchist books and pictures of Marx and Lenin.

Madison is a social worker with a Manhattan-based programme attached to a
psychiatric hospital. He is said to be a member of the People's Law
Collective, a voluntary group that advises protesters on legal issues
arising from actions. Wallschlaeger produces a talk show on radio called
This Week in Radical History.
