[creative-radio] Five ways news sites can generate links

Five ways news sites can generate links

News organisations are trying to regulate use of their content and
encourage visitors to pay for their news. But most simultaneously realise
they need Google and other search engines to rank their sites in order to
have a significant chance at earning revenue online.

[excerpt]

http://www.ejc.net/magazine/article/five_ways_news_sites_can_generate_links/

Share buttons on The Wall Street Journal's website illustrate the paradox.
Even as News Corpplans to begin charging mobile readers re-raises
paywalls, its articles are surrounded by "share" buttons for Facebook,
Twitter, Digg and many more.

Why? Incoming links are crucial to search engine rankings. To search
engines, inbound links are similar to votes, showing that others feel
strongly enough about the page to link to it, indicating that it is worthy
of high rankings.
Newspapers and other news organisations already have an upper hand when it
comes to earning incoming links. Their brand and reputation prompt
linking. But with so many outlets competing for the same audience and many
online publications finding credibility with their audience, simply being
a reputable source is no longer enough.

How can news organisations get more incoming links in this increasingly
competitive climate? Here are five suggestions from a blogger and someone
who links to news sites every day.

GUINEA: IFJ CONDEMNS THREATS AND VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALISTS

http://tinyurl.com/yzlsqe4

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has firmly condemned the
violence and death threats by the military junta against journalists in
Guinea. Mouctar Bah, the Conakry correspondent of Agence France-Presse and
Radio France Internationale, Amadou Diallo, the BBC's correspondent and
Mamadou Ba journalist of the satirical newspaper Le Lynx are roughed up by
soldiers covering the violent dispersal of an opposition meeting in which
more than hundred persons died in September, 28 2009.

SIERRA LEONE: JOURNALISTS AT WAR WITH HIGHEST COURT

http://www.ipsnews.net/africa/nota.asp?idnews=48787

Umaru Fofana looks dishevelled. His hair is overgrown and people who do not
know him could be mistaken for thinking he just joined an Afro band. And his
hanging beard will surely solicit suspicious glances. But Fofana is not some
musician or an unkempt hobo. He is the president of the Sierra Leone
Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and his appearance is all for the cause of
media freedom. The association petitioned the court for an interpretation
and repeal of the criminal and seditious libel law contained in the Public
Order Act of 1965.

ZIMBABWE: MUGABE ATTACKS 'PIRATE' RADIO STATIONS... AGAIN

http://www.swradioafrica.com/news081009/mugsattackspirates081009.htm

Mugabe used an appearance at the International Telecommunications Union
(ITU) 'World 2009' meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday to attack the
West for what he called the continued violation of Zimbabwe's airwaves by
foreign based radio stations. In a speech that aptly summed up his regime's
attitude towards media freedom, Mugabe told a Council of Ministers meeting
that 'certain western countries had 'radio broadcasting systems' that were
targeting 'his' country to further their 'obnoxious regime change agendas'.

[creative-radio] Panjab University radio station to go on air soon

PU radio station to go on air soon
Amit Sharma, TNN 8 October 2009, 05:21am IST

[excerpt]

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/PU-radio-station-to-go-on-air-soon/articleshow/5099890.cms

CHANDIGARH: Community radio is all set to go on-air at Panjab University,
with School of Communication Studies ready to broadcast its first
programme within four months. The round-the-clock station is a result of
the Memorandum of Understanding between PU and Broadcast Engineering
Consultants Limited (BECIL) under Union ministry.

The school's chairperson, Dr Mohanmeet Khosla, said, ''The project is in
the final stages of execution. A BECIL team had visited the department on
September 30 to have a look at the infrastructure and identify sites for
installing radio towers.''

There would be two studios — one for live programming and the other as a
back-up for preparing programmes — apart from a panel discussion room, she
added. The equipment required for the station would reportedly be provided
by BECIL.

Discussing the programme content, Dr Khosla said, ''Fifty percent will
focus on the lower segments residing in slums in and around the city.
We'll concentrate on development, health and community-related issues that
will help educate and create awareness among the masses.''

[creative-radio] Industry wakes up to community radio in India

Industry wakes up to community radio in India
Robin Thomas
October 08 2009

http://www.exchange4media.com/e4m/Radio/RadioNews.asp?section_id=7&news_id=36104&tag=32030&pict=0

[excerpt]

With 57 community radio stations in the country so far, and counting, this
medium is seen as addressing small communities and meeting an individual's
day-to-day concerns and local needs in a significant way.

Mumbai is the latest to get the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting's
(MIB) Grant of Permission Agreement for establishing, maintaining and
operating a community radio station at Union Park Residents Association,
(Khar-Bandra). The community radio station is expected to be operational
within three months as per the agreement and will be called 'Jago Mumbai'.

This apart, some community radio stations to have got the MIB's nod in
recent months include Gurgaon (Haryana), Namakkal (Tamil Nadu) and the
Mahila SEWA Trust (Ahmedabad). Of these, the Gurgaon station is expected
to be operational in another two months, while the Namakkal and Mahila
SEWA Trust stations are already operational.

exchange4media speaks with some industry experts on the scope and the road
ahead for growth of community radio in India.

[creative-radio] West Sumatera Earthquake: Radio Nederland Builds Disaster Awareness Radio on the Hypocenter

West Sumatera Earthquake RNW Builds Disaster Awareness Radio on the
Hypocenter
(id) 9 Oktober 2009 - 11:21 WIB
Kurniawan Tri Yunanto - translated by Rosmi Julitasari

http://www.vhrmedia.com/RNW-Builds-Disaster-Awareness-Radio-on-the-Hypocenter-news2396.html

VHRmedia, Padang Pariaman – Radio Nederland Wereldomroep gave a unit of
radio transmitter to Kiambang's and Sungai Geringging's residents in West
Sumatera. This disaster awareness radio is built to prevent confusing
information about victims and to make the aid distribution easier.

RWN manager in Jakarta Han Harlan came to the location with technicians
from Netherland to hand over the aid. RNW also gave transistor radios to
be spread in 40 command posts (posko) in Padang Pariaman and Agam
sub-district.

"This tool is for emergency situation," Han Harlan said to residents who
are about to operate the disaster awareness radio at the Kiambang Village,
Nagari Lumbuk Padang of Padang Pariaman, Thursday (10/8). According to Han
Harlan the 100 watt radio transmitter can reach the areas, which are still
isolated because of the earthquake.

Hendri Ihsan, a community radio administrator in Kiambang, hopes that this
aid can alleviate the sorrow of earthquake victims. Now, they need
communication tools to carry the aid. "Several days after the earthquake,
all information was focused on Padang while other areas were not
covered-up and neglected. Then the focus was switched to Pariaman, and now
is to Agam," he said. Hendri also said that the radio is can be used as a
media for post-trauma therapy.

After Kiambang, RNW is about to give the same contribution to Geringging
village, located on the border of Padang Pariaman and Agam district. This
village is not far from the landslide center in Malala sub-district.

Roads to the location are still covered by soil, and it gives difficulties
in carrying the aid. It also makes thousand survivors are isolated in
emergency tents. (E1)
