[creative-radio] International Green Pen Awards 2009: celebrating environmental journalism around

Colombo, Sri Lanka: 14 October 2009. American, Brazilian and Indian pioneers in promoting environmental journalism in the developing world have just been honoured with the International Green Pen Award 2009.

They are among the five latest winners announced by the Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists(APFEJ) a non-profit media organisation headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka.The APFEJ is a network and regional association founded in 1988, dedicated to promoting education understanding and awareness of the environment through honest and accurate reporting of local, regional and
international environmental and development issues. It acts as the head of national environmental journalist forums(NFEJs) or media organisations of 42 countries in the Asia Pacific region.The APFEJ ad hoc committee was formed in 1985 at a regional conference on media and environment in New Delhi, organised by UN-ESCAP in collaboration with UNEP. Today, APFEJ is the world's oldest and largest organisation of professional environmental journalists, with networking contacts of over 12,000 members in nearly 154 countries around the world.

Prof Sharon M. Friedman of USA, Haroldo F Castro of Brazil and Carmen Miranda of India have been researching, training or otherwise supporting environmental journalists in the developing world for over a quarter of a century. The other two winners, Nanette Woonton of Cook Islands and Natallia Sliadneva of Belarus,have a distinguished record of being path-breaking environmental journalists in their own countries and regions.

International Green Pen Award is presented each year at the annual congress for journalists who have made a significant contribution in promoting environmental journalism.

This year's awards will be presented during the 18th APFEJ World Congress of Environmental Journalists to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 19 ï¿½ 21 October 2009. It is organised by the
Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists (APFEJ) in partnership with the Commonwealth Environmental Journalists Association (CEJA), Sri Lanka Environmental Journalists Forum(SLEJF) and a number of other media and development organisations. Nearly 100 environmental journalists from 30 countries will participate in the congress on the theme 'Educate to end Climate Poverty'.

"I am delighted to receive this award," says Dr Sharon M. Friedman, Professor and Director of the Science and Environmental Writing Program in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Lehigh University, in Pennsylvania, USA. "Environmental journalism in Asia
has advanced in leaps and bounds since Kenneth Friedman and I first engaged the region in the 1980s."

Another winner, Haroldo Castro, said: "People will only support conservation if they first understand why we want to protect a particular area or species. This is why environmental communication ï¿½ by journalists, film makers and educators ï¿½ is tremendously important. I appreciate this award, recognising over three decades of my work around the world."

International Green Pen Award, established in 1998, recognizes leadership of individuals in the field of environmental journalism - people who help, inspire and support others in the field.

Nominees can be full-time or freelance journalists based anywhere in the world, and working in any form of print, broadcast or online media. They may be employed by media organisations, the United Nations, government agencies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Here are brief profiles of this year's winners (more information is available on the website of the http://www.environmentaljournalists.org Dr Sharon Friedman is one of the world's leading researchers and teachers on science and environmental communication. She studies how scientific, environmental, technological and health issues are communicated to the public, and has conducted research on risk communication and on mass media coverage of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl nuclear accidents among other hazards. In 1988, she co-authored with Kenneth A. Friedman the pioneering publication 'Reporting on the Environment: A Handbook for Journalists', published by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Asian-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists Translated into 19 languages, the book inspired a generation of environmental journalists across the Asia Pacific region. Haroldo Castro has 30 years of professional experience as an international communications strategist, filmmaker and television producer, photojournalist, and conservationist. He worked at Conservation International (CI) from 1991 to 2006. In 1999, he created a contest for environmental journalists, the "Biodiversity Reporting Award" (http://www.biodiversityreporting.org) to acknowledge the efforts of media professionals in developing countries. As Director of the Asia Regional programme of the Panos Institute in the 1990s, Carmen Miranda was responsible for developing and managing a series of training programmes and fellowships for journalists in South Asia and Indonesia to create awareness and encourage reporting on environmental issues. The programmes were also designed to promote regional exchange of information on the environment, cooperation and
understanding and to identify common regional environmental concerns such as water, which was covered extensively and from different perspectives across the region through Panos media fellowships. Before and after her stint with Panos, Carmen has a varied career as writer, illustrator, film maker and campaigner on a range of environmental and social issues in her native India as well as in other parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. Nanette Woonton was the News Director for television news with Cook Islands Television in the Cook Islands, where she also worked in producing documentaries, advertisements, radio news and print news. In 2007, Woonton moved to Samoa to work with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) as the Associate Media and Publications Officer. She has been instrumental in a strong climate change media outreach for the Pacific islands. In 2008,
she sourced funding for a capacity building for climate change reporting project, which brought Pacific islands reporters together to undergo training with specialists in climate and other environment fields. Read more at:

Natallia Sliadneva of Belarus is both a journalist and environmental educator. She is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the ecological magazines 'The World of Animals' and 'Ecologist and Me'. Starting her journalistic career in 1997, she has worked closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture as well as the Training-methodical Association of Higher

One of the plaintiff's lawyers in the wrongful death lawsuit over a radio
station's fatal water drinking contest today asked jurors to award his
clients between $24.62 million and $34.45 million for the loss of the love,

Jennifer Lea Strange.

Court jury. "Understand and appreciate the value of a mother, a lover, a
companion and a best friend."

Dreyer made his request on behalf of
<http://topics.sacbee.com/Jennifer+Strange/> Jennifer Strange's husband,
Billy Strange, 30, and their two children, Ryland, 6, and Jorie, 3.

The 28-year-old woman died on Jan. 12, 2007, of acute water intoxication as
a result of her participation in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest put
on by radio station <http://topics.sacbee.com/KDND/> KDND "The End" 107.9.
The contest promised the popular video game to the whomever could drink the
most water without urinating.

Strange went home and died after the contest.

Dreyer also asked the jurors to award his clients as well as
<http://topics.sacbee.com/Jennifer+Strange/> Jennifer Strange's older son,
Keegan Sims, another $1,888,135 in economic damages as a result of past and
present financial support and household services they could have expected to
receive.

Keegan Sims' attorney, Harvey R. Levine, is scheduled to present his closing
arguments to the jury on Wednesday on the non-economic damages he thinks
that should be awarded to the 13-year-old boy.

Defense attorney Donald W. Carlson, who is representing plaintiffs

its parent company,

Communications Corp., also is scheduled to present his closing argument
Wednesday.

Dreyer, in his closing arguments today, told the jury today that the
evidence is "overwhelming" that two defendants remaining in the case were
responsible for the woman's death nearly three years ago.

"You get to decide what the standards are in this community, how radio
station personnel are going to operate ... and how a company like Entercom
is going to train its personnel," Dreyer said in the beginning of his
closing arguments in the trial that is nearing its conclusion in
<http://topics.sacbee.com/Sacramento+Superior+Court/> Sacramento Superior
Court.

Dreyer said that if the employees of
<http://topics.sacbee.com/Entercom+Sacramento/> Entercom Sacramento's "
<http://topics.sacbee.com/Morning/> Morning Rave" program on
<http://topics.sacbee.com/KDND/> KDND were negligent on the day of the fatal
contest, and if they were acting in the scope of their employment, then the
corporate defendants also are responsible and that they should be held

death.

"We believe the evidence demonstrates in overwhelming fashion that these two
defendants were responsible," Dreyer said of Philadelphia-based Entercom and
its Sacramento subsidiary. He said it was up to Entercom "to make sure
people don't do dangerous contests. This isn't something we made up. These
are their rules."

Strange finished second in the contest.

Arbitron's flawed ratings hurt minority radio

Even in an age of media fragmentation, free, over-the-air radio remains a
vital source of news, information and entertainment for millions of
Americans. Arbitron, the company that provides radio ratings data, plays a
critical role. Its data are used to determine the price broadcasters fetch
for advertising, which directly impacts the content that is available on the
dial. Arbitron's responsibility is heightened by the fact that it is the
dominant radio ratings firm and is unregulated by government.
Recently, Arbitron has introduced a new rating system called the Portable
People Meter (PPM) that requires participants to carry a cell phone-sized
device that picks up radio signals. Since its introduction, minority
broadcasters have demonstrated that this system undercounts African American
and Hispanic listeners. Recognizing the public interest at stake, both
Congress and the Federal Communications Commission launched investigations.

This past week, the House Committee for Oversight and Government Reform,
under the leadership of Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), released information
that demonstrates the depth of the problem.

The Media Ratings Council (MRC), the independent industry body that
accredits media ratings systems, turned over its audits of the PPM system to
the oversight committee under subpoena. The committee put out a statement to
inform the public of the serious flaws in the PPM system that these audits
reveal.

According to the statement put out by the committee, the MRC's documents
indicated "persistent problems" with Arbitron's minority sample audiences.
For example, the committee reported that subpoenaed documents showed that a
relatively small subset of individuals is providing usable data. In New York
City, Arbitron recruited a sample audience of 5,400 people. But only 2,700
persons — half of the sample — provided data. The committee reports that
"the radio listening habits of over four million ethnic minorities are
represented by only 500 Arbitron recruits." This paltry sampling is being
repeated in cities nationwide, impacting the content available to tens of
millions of Americans. This is only one example of the concerns raised by
the commission.

It is hard to overstate the magnitude of Arbitron's dereliction of duty.
Americans are now painfully aware of the price paid when financial ratings
agencies fail to provide accurate information for the investment world.
Arbitron plays just as important a role in the media world. It is no
exaggeration to say that unless Arbitron acts in a principled fashion, it
has the power to upend the radio marketplace.

That is exactly what is happening today. Since the rollout of the PPM
system, Spanish-language and urban-formatted radio stations have seen their
ratings plummet. The industry faces the real possibility that these stations
will go under and the dial will become even more homogeneous — all because
the data that drive the system are simply wrong.

This scathing congressional report should have provided Arbitron with a
wake-up call.

Instead, it seems Arbitron is intent on hitting the snooze button.
Arbitron's response lashes out at the committee for reaching "erroneous
conclusions." The allegation is farcical.

Indeed, the committee offered no conclusions — it simply reported the facts
it had uncovered in the MRC documents.

Moreover, Arbitron claimed that it has been "open and forthcoming" with
Congress. If so, why did the committee have to subpoena the MRC records?
Surely, Arbitron could have turned them over voluntarily. The only
conclusion is that Arbitron knew those documents contained irrefutable
evidence that the PPM system is flawed.
It is time for Arbitron to stop playing games. A critical part of our
nation's media and cultural landscape is at stake. Millions of Americans are
counting on them to get this right, so that they don't lose the radio
content upon which they rely. It is not too much to ask the ratings provider
to deliver reliable data. It is simply a question of doing its job. That is
a message Arbitron must heed.

[creative-radio] OOT--Menulis Narasi

Kursus Narasi - Pantau
Angkatan VIII

KURSUS
ini dirancang untuk orang yang ingin belajar menulis panjang yang
memikat sekaligus mendalam. Ia juga diperuntukkan bagi mereka yang
berminat menulis esai atau narasi.

Ia mengedepankan
dasar-dasar etika jurnalisme serta belajar memahami mekanisme
verifikasi, teknik wawancara, riset, menganalisis struktur bacaan,
bahasa, penelusuran data serta editing. Ia menjadi landasan penting
dalam belajar menulis yang baik, mulai tulisan feature hingga narasi.

Pantau
mulai menawarkan pengajaran genre ini pada media tahun 2001, setiap
semester sekali, selama dua minggu. Peserta maksimal 16 orang. Jumlah
ini dianggap optimal untuk sebuah metode pelatihan, yang berlangsung
selama 12 hingga 16 sesi. Setiap sesi 90-menit diformat serius namun
santai. Peserta bisa berdiskusi langsung. Total, Pantau sudah
mengadakan 16 kali kursus ini. Peserta datang dari berbagai kota, dari Banda Aceh hingga Jayapura, dari Pontianak
hingga Kucing, dari Ende hingga Kupang. Alumninya, kini mulai
bermunculan. Ada yang menulis buku. Ada yang jadi pemimpin redaksi. Ada
yang sekolah lanjut.

Pada 2006, paket semesteran tersebut
ditambah dengan paket empat bulan (lima bulan bila terpotong hari libur
nasional). Kursus ini berlangsung di Jakarta, mulai setiap Mei dan November. Pantau telah menyelenggarakan enam kali kursus dengan total peserta 108 orang.

Kursus juga terkadang diadakan di luar Jakarta berdasarkan permintaan. Di Jakarta, kursus ini diikuti berbagai kalangan.
Baik itu aktivis, pengacara, dokter, dosen, mahasiswa, arsitek, pekerja pertambangan, NGO dan lain-lain.

Harapannya,
merangsang peserta membuat tulisan yang dalam, memikat dan analitis,
enak dibaca dan mengalir. Cerita yang analitis dibutuhkan masyarakat
untuk mengambil sikap terhadap pokok masalah.

Kursus diadakan
sebanyak 18 sesi dengan frekuensi pertemuan mingguan, setiap Rabu malam
pukul 19.00-21.00. Ini sengaja dibuat agar peserta punya waktu
mengendapkan materi belajar, membaca dan mengerjakan tugas. Kelas
ditekankan pada banyak latihan. Kelas ini juga akan membicarakan
karya-karya klasik nonfiksi Joseph Mitchell, Truman Capote, John
Hersey, Gay Talese dan Ryszard Kapuscinski serta Pham Xuan An dari Saigon.

Tugas akhir setiap peserta menulis sebuah narasi sekitar 5.000 kata.

Kursus ini juga telah menghadirkan banyak tokoh penulis sebagai pembicara tamu. Mereka adalah Arief
Budiman,
Bre Redana, Daoed Joesoef, Donald K Emmerson, Fadjroel Rahman, Jean
Jacques Kusni, Julia Suryakusuma, Putu Oka Sukanta, Riri Riza, Samuel
Mulia, Martin Aleida dan Maria Hartiningsih.

INSTRUKTUR

Andreas Harsono --
Wartawan Jakarta, anggota International Consortium of Investigative
Journalists. Pada 1999 mendapatkan Nieman Fellowship di Universitas
Harvard. Menyunting buku "Jurnalisme Sastrawi: Antologi Liputan
Mendalam dan Memikat." Kini menyelesaikan buku "From Sabang
to Merauke: Debunking the Myth of Indonesian Nationalism," yang
membahas hubungan media dengan kekerasan etnik, agama dan nasionalisme
di Indonesia dan Timor Lorosae.

Budi Setiyono -- wartawan Jakarta , pernah bekerja untuk Suara Merdeka (Semarang ) dan majalah Pantau ( Jakarta ). Dia co-editor buku "Revolusi
Belum Selesai" yang berisi kumpulan pidato politik Presiden Soekarno
serta "Jurnalisme Sastrawi: Antologi Liputan Mendalam dan Memikat."
Kini menyelesaikan buku soal penyair A.S. Dharta dari Lembaga
Kebudayaan Rakyat.

INSTRUKTUR TAMU

Justina Ayu Utami -- novelis dan aktivis. Banyak karya yang telah dihasilkan, salah satunya Saman,
menjadi juara sayembara penulisan roman Dewan Kesenian Jakarta 1998.
Dalam waktu tiga tahun novel tersebut terjual hingga 55 ribu eksemplar,
dan mengantarkan dirinya mendapat kehormatan Prince Claus Award 2000
dari Prince Claus Fund, sebuah yayasan yang bermarkas di Den Haag, Belanda.
Di awal 2002, Ayu meluncurkan novel Larung, dan menulis kumpulan Esai
Si Parasit Lajang, yang diterbitkan Gagas Media, Jakarta, 2003.

Ayu juga pernah menjadi wartawan di majalah Humor, Matra, Forum Keadilan dan D&R. Di masa Orde Baru, ia turut mengagas berdirinya organisasi wartawan Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) yang memprotes pembredelan majalah Tempo, Editor dan Detik pada Juni 1994. Ayu, yang juga mantan Finalis Wajah Femina 1990 itu, kini bekerja di jurnal kebudayaan Kalam dan di Teater Utan Kayu.

Arswendo Atmowiloto -- penulis dan wartawan yang aktif di berbagai majalah dan surat kabar. Pada 1990, ketika menjabat sebagai pemimpin redaksi tabloid Monitor, ia 'dipenjarakan' karena satu jajak pendapat yang dianggap menghina kaum tertentu.

Selama dalam tahanan, Arswendo menghasilkan
tujuh buah novel, puluhan artikel, tiga naskah skenario dan sejumlah
cerita bersambung. Sebagian dikirimkannya ke berbagai surat kabar
dengan menggunakan alamat dan identitas palsu.

Ia juga pernah mengelola tabloid Bintang
bersama Sudwikatmono, lalu mendirikan perusahaan sendiri, PT Atmo Bismo
Sangotrah. Selain masih aktif menulis, Arswendo memiliki sebuah rumah
produksi sinetron dan memproduksi sejumlah sinetron dan film.

SYARAT DAN BIAYA

Peserta
bisa dari berbagai latar belakang disiplin ilmu, minat atau profesi.
Kursus ini banyak diikuti oleh kalangan aktivis, wartawan, dokter,
pengacara, mahasiswa, dosen, peneliti, manajer dan sebagainya. Biaya
kursus 4 juta rupiah dan bisa diangsur selama kursus.

PESERTA
Peserta
dibatasi 18 orang untuk memudahkan lalu-lintas ide dalam kelas. Peserta
diharapkan mengirim biodata dan contoh tulisan agar instruktur bisa
mengenal background dan kebutuhan masing-masing peserta. Peserta juga
diminta mengerjakan tugas membaca, latihan meliput, serta menulis
pekerjaan rumah.
