Annie told me her story over dinner. Her father was kidnapped in Colombia
by the FARC guerillas. He was held in the jungle for months. He was
rescued in a military raid. It was an amazing story, made more so by the
fact that it was so common. Except perhaps for the Rescue part. Thousands
of people are still missing down there, and there's a radio station that
broadcasts to them--messages from their loved ones. Shows like "Voices of
Kidnapping" have been doing this for years and years. I asked if Annie
would want to go back and tell the story of her father, and also of those
who are still missing and those who love them. This is Annie's first piece
for radio and it's a good one.

reporting – on crime and court cases, for example – in New York City. This
invariably involves talking to grieving family members, so I came to the
task of interviewing the family members of the kidnapped and disappeared
somewhat prepared. However, I was not prepared for the intimacy of a radio
interview. I anticipated more reserve on the part of my subjects and I was
surprised to find that they were more comfortable talking on mic than I
was."

[creative-radio] Outta Road - Jamaica

 

Outta Road - Jamaica
The entertainment-education (EE) initiative "Outta Road" ("What's Happening
out in the Streets") centred around 155 episodes of a radio serial drama
that aired nationwide from March 2007 to March 2008 and then from November
2007 to July 2008. It addressed issues such as HIV/AIDS, adolescent sexual
and reproductive health, violence prevention, and substance abuse
prevention. Designed for 10-19 year olds across Jamaica, the messages in
Outta Road were reinforced by flyers, pamphlets, handbooks, and good
parenting calendars. Youth listened to the programmes in a classroom setting
and were also given CDs to bring home to listen to and share with their
friends. Guidance counsellors used the programme as a stimulus for
discussion about difficult and highly sensitive issues.

Southern Sudan Interactive Radio Instruction (SSIRI)
The SSIRI programme aims to design, develop, and pilot-test appropriate and
cost-effective technologies that provide learning opportunities for
children, adults, and teachers in southern Sudan. Any school with a radio
can receive and use the lessons, broadcast daily on Sudanese national radio;
however, the project is focusing on 200 schools in 8 counties, providing
supplies, training, and assessment. SSIRI employs a team of 18 Southern
Sudanese educators, scriptwriters, actors, and production staff to develop
100 half-hour programmes for each grade level (grades 1-3). The lessons use
a combination of games, songs, and stories to teach English literacy, native
language literacy, and mathematics. SSIRI aims to reach very remote areas
where educational materials are unavailable.

"Nothing seems able to stop the violence against journalists," Reporters
Without Borders said today after learning that radio commentator Eugene
Paet was wounded in a shooting attack yesterday in a the northern province
of Ilocos Sur.

"After a nightmare 2009 culminating in the massacre of 30 journalists by a
militia on Mindanao Island, one might have hoped that journalists would
stop being the target of killings," Reporters Without Borders said. "But
this attempt to murder a radio presenter marks a deplorable start to 2010
that bodes ill for the rest of the year."

The press freedom organisation added: "The authorities must, as a matter
of urgency, make 2010 the year of an offensive against impunity, and must
act with courage and energy against those who bring disgrace on the
Philippines by instigating his kind of violence."

The motive for the attempt to kill Paet is not yet clear but his family
said it could be linked to criticism he has expressed on the air. Paet was
shot twice very near Bantay police station as he was driving home after
work. His assailants were two unidentified men on a motorcycle using a .45
revolver. He was rushed to a Vigan hospital where he was said to be in a
stable condition.

Have you ever wanted to volunteer in Africa? Interested in radio
broadcasting? (Start dates flexible)

We are looking for interns to volunteer with 3 local radio stations in the
Cape Coast area of Ghana (Ahomka FM, ATL FM and Eagle FM).

As an intern you will be part of a team professionals at local radio station
in Cape Coast Ghana (either ATL FM, Eagle FM, or Ahomka FM), working to
create and implement radio programming. You will be involved in
scriptwriting, conducting interviews, and involved in all that goes to
producing news and studio based programmes. Duties may include reporting
stories on air and conducting interviews.

Objectives of the placement

• Assist the radio station in the creation and implementation of its
programmes.

• Advocate local and national issues, such as human rights, politics, civil
liberties, social enterprise, gender issues and economic development

• Foster skill transfer between the interns and the radio station.
Application instructions:
We are looking for people with a proven interest in journalism or community
activism. Experience in radio journalism is not required, but is preferred.

Fees:
All interns are housed at the Abusua Foundation house, and are provided with
meals, accommodation, airport pick-up and drop-off, orientation and 24/7
emergency care support for a flat fee of $120 a week. To secure the
placement there is a $500 deposit (a percentage of which is donated to the
radio station in-kind).
