The NCRF is a national, membership-driven association of community radio
stations and support service organizations. Radio station members are
independent non-profit CBOs - owned and run by diverse local communities
who actively participate in the development of programming activities, for
sustainable non-discriminatory local development.

Our work is to build an enabling environment and a coherent sector
identity -- ensuring continued healthy growth of community radio in South
Africa.

Artists Against Apartheid is an ongoing concert series in Montreal that brings
together groundbreaking artists and musicians for performances in solidarity
with Palestinian human rights.

Over eleven concerts in Montreal incredible local artists performed for
hundreds at various concerts halls across the city, many of these concerts were
recorded by CKUT radio...

CKUT radio presents a special radio broadcast featuring live performances
recorded at the Artists Against Apartheid, recordings being broadcast for the
first time live on CKUT community radio.

Broadcast will feature performances from groundbreaking artists from different
front-lines within Montreal's internationally celebrated music scene...

Featuring recordings of live performances from the late Lhasa de Sela,
saxophonist Colin Stetson, violinist Sarah Neufeld from Arcade Fire,
percussionist Shahzad Ismaily, cellist Rebecca Foon, Esmerine, Seven Arrows
ensemble featuring Andrew Barr (percussion), Sarah Pagé (harp), Yuki Isami
(flute), Joe Grass (pedal steel) and also a trio performance featuring Sam
Shalabi (oud), Omar Dewachi (oud) and Pierre-Guy Blanchard (percussion)...

As a cultural initiative Artists Against Apartheid occurs as Israel's military
occupation over the Gaza Strip and West Bank intensifies, in violation of
international law and multiple U.N. resolutions. Palestinian citizens face an
entrenched system of racial discrimination and segregation, resembling the
defeated apartheid system in South Africa. A matrix of Israeli-only roads,
electrified fences, and over 500 military checkpoints and roadblocks erase
freedom of movement.

In response to apartheid policies imposed on the Palestinian people by Israel
multiple artists are coming together in Montreal through the ongoing Artists
Against Apartheid concert series, presenting a cultural force in solidarity
with the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom.

Annie told me her story over dinner. Her father was kidnapped in Colombia
by the FARC guerillas. He was held in the jungle for months. He was
rescued in a military raid. It was an amazing story, made more so by the
fact that it was so common. Except perhaps for the Rescue part. Thousands
of people are still missing down there, and there's a radio station that
broadcasts to them--messages from their loved ones. Shows like "Voices of
Kidnapping" have been doing this for years and years. I asked if Annie
would want to go back and tell the story of her father, and also of those
who are still missing and those who love them. This is Annie's first piece
for radio and it's a good one.

reporting – on crime and court cases, for example – in New York City. This
invariably involves talking to grieving family members, so I came to the
task of interviewing the family members of the kidnapped and disappeared
somewhat prepared. However, I was not prepared for the intimacy of a radio
interview. I anticipated more reserve on the part of my subjects and I was
surprised to find that they were more comfortable talking on mic than I
was."

[creative-radio] Outta Road - Jamaica

 

Outta Road - Jamaica
The entertainment-education (EE) initiative "Outta Road" ("What's Happening
out in the Streets") centred around 155 episodes of a radio serial drama
that aired nationwide from March 2007 to March 2008 and then from November
2007 to July 2008. It addressed issues such as HIV/AIDS, adolescent sexual
and reproductive health, violence prevention, and substance abuse
prevention. Designed for 10-19 year olds across Jamaica, the messages in
Outta Road were reinforced by flyers, pamphlets, handbooks, and good
parenting calendars. Youth listened to the programmes in a classroom setting
and were also given CDs to bring home to listen to and share with their
friends. Guidance counsellors used the programme as a stimulus for
discussion about difficult and highly sensitive issues.

[creative-radio] Southern Sudan Interactive Radio Instruction (SSIRI)

 

Southern Sudan Interactive Radio Instruction (SSIRI)
The SSIRI programme aims to design, develop, and pilot-test appropriate and
cost-effective technologies that provide learning opportunities for
children, adults, and teachers in southern Sudan. Any school with a radio
can receive and use the lessons, broadcast daily on Sudanese national radio;
however, the project is focusing on 200 schools in 8 counties, providing
supplies, training, and assessment. SSIRI employs a team of 18 Southern
Sudanese educators, scriptwriters, actors, and production staff to develop
100 half-hour programmes for each grade level (grades 1-3). The lessons use
a combination of games, songs, and stories to teach English literacy, native
language literacy, and mathematics. SSIRI aims to reach very remote areas
where educational materials are unavailable.
