Community Radio Feature: Radio Agnia FM-Cote d'Ivoire

Radio Agnia FM is a three-year old radio station, located in Abengourou, Côte d'Ivoire, east of the capital, Abidjan. The General Council of Abengourou plays host to the radio station, providing it office space and funding. Radio Agnia FM's primary mission is to educate and train people for economic, social and cultural development.  The radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, and puts an average of six programmes on air per day. Approximately 5% of the programmes are in the local language, Agni. In addition to broadcasting entertainment segments, Radio Agnia FM also produces programming that covers rural issues and awareness campaigns. Radio Agnia FM also produces special feature programmes about the men and women who have positively influenced Abengourou District. The radio is one of the few stations available in the region other than ONUCI FM, the United Nations radio station.

According to the Radio Agnia FM station manager, Jean Luc Konaté, the station's objective in the short-term is to reach the largest number of people possible, in the medium-term to be more professional and in the long-term, to be free and independent. Radio Agnia FM would like to improve its services by increasing its range of coverage, physical resources and personnel training, ultimately hoping to be autonomous of the support of the General Council, on which the station is currently dependent for all funding. Radio Agnia continues to address its original goals: serving as a tool to bring people together, fitting into the dynamics of national reconciliation and contributing to the consolidation of social peace.

Radio Scriptwriting Competition and Free Training Course for African Radio Broadcasters

Farm Radio International is organizing its fourth scriptwriting competition for organizations and individuals that work with radio in Africa.  This radio scriptwriting competition aims to build the production skills of broadcasters who serve smallholder farmers and rural communities.  Also, it promotes the exchange of high quality radio scripts amongst radio organizations in sub-Saharan Africa in order to benefit rural listeners.  This year, the subject of the competition is healthy communities.

The script is to be prepared by talking with local farmers and can take a variety of formats - for example, dramas, interviews, or conversations. The script must be an original piece of work between 500 and 2,000 words in English or French, written specifically for this competition.

To assist participants with writing the radio scripts, a free, ten-week online scriptwriting training course is available at http://scriptcompetition.farmradio.org/online-course-2 . Script entries must be received no later than November 1, 2010.

For more information, visit  http://scriptcompetition.farmradio.org/competition-2

Radio, Mobile Phones Stand Out in Africa's Media and Communication Landscape

Radio, Mobile Phones Stand Out in Africa's Media and Communication Landscape
While radio remains the single most important source of information in Africa, new technologies are seeing mobile phones and other ICTs contributing to the media sector. Intermedia is doing research into these trends, looking at Kenya, Zambia, Ghana, and other countries outside of Africa. Findings include:

  • Individuals who have had ownership of a phone for at least five years, have shown be greater consumers of a variety of media compared to those who have owned a phone for a shorter period of time.
  • Mobile phones are rivalling radio as the most accessible communication or media platforms in both Kenya and Ghana.

More information and data analysis is available through their AudienceScapes project, in particular,

[creative-radio] Radio Resource Pack - SADC Gender Protocol Media Provisions

RESOURCES FOR RADIO PRODUCERS

Broadcasters, activists, and all those interested in gender and media can
listen to interviews recorded at the 4th Gender and Media Summit. Producers
are welcome to use the interviews for their coverage of the GEM Summit,
progress report launches, and gender in the media in general. Produced in
collaboration with CMFD Productions and supported by FES, the Tune into GEM
Summit Protocol Radio Resource Pack includes downloadable audio files,
interview summaries, suggested cues, and background information.

To access the files and producers notes:
http://www.genderlinks.org.za/article/radio-resource-pack---tune-into-gem-su
mmit-2010-10-10

The SADC Protocol on Gender and Development, adopted by Heads of State in
August 2008, is a unique sub-regional instrument that brings together all
commitments to ending gender equality and sets 28 targets to be achieved by
2015. The Protocol calls on the media to mainstream gender in all laws,
policies, and training. As in other areas of decision-making, the media is
called on to make sure that there are equal numbers of women and men in all
areas and at all levels by 2015 and that they are given equal voice in all
coverage. The media is urged to challenge stereotypes and to be sensitive in
its coverage of topics like gender violence.

The Gender and Media Progress Study (GMPS) shows that there has been a
marginal 2% increase in women sources in the media from 17% in the 2003
Gender and Media Baseline Study (GMBS) to 19%. While countries with more
advanced media like South Africa, Namibia and Mauritius have remained
static, smaller and more socially conservative countries like Lesotho and
Malawi have demonstrated remarkable progress. Another positive sign is that
the proportion of women sources went up in hard beats that have been the
focus of media advocacy and training. For example, the proportion of women
sources in sports increased from 8% to 12%; in politics from 9% to 13%; and
in economics from 10% to 14%

It is against this background that gender and media activists gathered in
Johannesburg for the fourth gender and media summit in October 2010. Under
the banner, Gender, Media, Diversity and Change, trainers, analysts,
activists and practitioners measured progress against the provisions of the
Protocol.

[creative-radio] AMARC and PPF mission makes key recommendations for disaster response

AMARC and PPF mission makes key recommendations for disaster response -
IFEX http://ow.ly/2Uq5H

13 October 2010
Campaigns and Advocacy
AMARC and PPF mission makes key recommendations for disaster response

(AMARC/PPF/IFEX) - Islamabad, October 9, 2010 - The international
assessment mission organized by the World Association of Community Radio
Broadcasters (AMARC) and the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) called on the
government of Pakistan to allow the establishment of at least 30
non-commercial flood-relief radio stations through community-based
organistions in the severely affected districts.

These were the key recommendations of an international assessment mission
carried out between 30 September and 10 October 2010. The mission visited
flood-hit communities in Thatta District (Sindh), Muzaffargarh District
(Punjab), and Charsadda/Nowshera (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The mission was
supported by BHN Foundation, Radio FMYY and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. The
international mission team included experts from UK, Japan and Indonesia.

The principle observations and findings of the mission were that while
existing FM local radios are playing an important role in flood response,
there are gaps in the provision of relevant local information in some of
the severely and moderately affected communities which are unlikely to be
met on a commercial basis. In light of these findings, the international
assessment mission recommended the establishment of flood-relief radio
stations in locations not served by existing local FM radio services.

In addition, the mission recommended that support be provided to existing
local FM radios to continue their vital work of providing information and
voice for flood-affected communities. That could be at a community level
to capture the voices and experiences of flood-hit communities and to
develop community correspondents among the affected communities. The
mission also recommended that work be undertaken at the provincial level
with media, NGO and governmental stakeholders to raise awareness of the
role of community media in disaster response and to engage in policy
dialogue.

AMARC is working with PPF to develop a plan of action to support the
humanitarian relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction effort, with a
focus on voice and access to information at the community level for people
in the affected communities, especially the most vulnerable and
marginalised.

The international assessment mission was framed by growing international
experience of community radio in humanitarian communications, disaster
response and reconstruction. Community radio stations under the ownership,
control and management of local communities and operated on a
non-commercial basis have proven to be of particular importance in
strengthening the voices and access to information of disaster-affected
communities. Community radios have played a key role in disaster response
in Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, Haiti and many other countries.

Devastating floods in Pakistan have left more than 2,000 people dead and
more than a million homes destroyed since the flooding began in July 2010.
The United Nations estimates that more than 20 million people have been
affected by the flooding, and have described it as one of the worst
humanitarian disasters in recent human history.

volunteers to help train up the staff at the orphanage to be able to
teach radio skills and record local bands and choirs, with the aim of
turning the facility into a community radio station in the future.

involves setting up Bario Radio, a new community radio station and
telecentre in a rural community in Borneo, in an area where there is no
existing local radio coverage. The station will provide a platform for
local discussion, communication, dissemination of information and the
promotion of local culture and community development. We are looking
for volunteers to work with the RadioActive team to get the station set
up and teach radio skills to the local community station staff so that
they can run their station effectively. If you are interested in
volunteering, speak good English and have experience in radio, please
get in touch! Expected dates: early January 2010 for one - two months.

Turkish group demands apology from Seehofer

Outraged Turkish groups and German politicians on Monday demanded an
apology from Horst Seehofer after the conservative Bavarian state premier
suggested over the weekend Germany put a stop to immigration for Turks and
Arabs.

Seehofer, who belongs to the CSU, the Bavarian sister party of Chancellor
Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, told news magazine Focus that
"immigrants from other cultures, such as those from Turkey and Arab
countries have more difficulties" integrating into German culture.
Therefore he had drawn the "conclusion that we need no additional
immigration from other cultural areas."

On Monday chairman of the Turkish Community in Germany (TGD), Kenan Kolat,
demanded an apology.

"The latest comments by Seehofer are defamatory and unacceptable," he told
daily Berliner Zeitung, speaking of an attempt to stigmatise certain
ethnic groups and trump former Bundesbank board member Thilo Sarrazin's
inflammatory assertions about Muslim immigrants.

Meanwhile politicians from across the spectrum expressed their dismay over
Seehofer's suggestion.

Germany's Christian Democratic commissioner for integration, Maria Böhmer,
said she was "very shocked," while Seehofer's fellow CSU party member and
parliamentary liaison at the Interior Ministry Ole Schröder accused
Seehofer of trying to talk around his own state's problems with
integration.

Bavarian Free Democrat and Justice Minister Sabine
Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger called Seehofer's words an "intentionally
simplified populist debate."

Opposition parties the environmentalist Greens and the centre-left Social
Democrats accused the Bavarian leader of pandering to far-right populism.

But other members of Seehofer's Christian Social Union defended him. Head
of the CSU's parliamentary group, Hans-Peter Friedrich, told daily
Hamburger Abendblatt that his party leader was "absolutely right."

Instead of allowing more immigrants from abroad, Germany should focus on
bringing in other European workers, he suggested.

"These people are easier to integrate into Germany than those who come
from foreign cultural groups," he said.
