[creative-radio] Take Back the Tech! Day Two

Hi all,

Again, asking if you could somehow incorporate this into today's news cycle.

All the best,

Sonia

Day 2 | Get the stats | Petition a Minister!

The known statistics on violence against women clearly indicate the pandemic proportion of this issue. The UN In-Depth Study on All Forms of Violence against Women found that at least one of our three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in her lifetime by someone usually known to her [http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/vaw/SGstudyvaw.htm#more].

At the same time, comprehensive data-collection on incidents of violence against women has been challenging. Some governments don't see this as an important issue and don't prioritise it on the national agenda. There is also the issue of underreporting, where barriers like poorly trained enforcement officers, lack of adequate laws and social sanctions such as "shame" make it virtually impossible for women and girls to report the violence they have faced without further risks or costs to their well-being.

We need statistics because they give us a sense of the extent of the problem. Well-develop statistics also help us to understand the different dimensions of the issue to be able to come up with good responses. Without statistics like the one above, it might be easy to dismiss violence against women as one-off incidents, or that rapists are mostly strangers instead of people we know and trust.

We are only just beginning to pay attention to how ICT impact on violence against women. It's only in the past few years that cyberstalking became a known phenomenon, and that new information is being uncovered about how mobile phones can become important points of struggle and violence. We know this is a serious issue, and we know it needs to be addressed now.

But current data collection efforts rarely include cases like cyberstalking or the use of private photographs to blackmail partners into staying in an abusive relationship. Apart from a few high-profile cases involving celebrities and politicians, we have very little data on how it affects the majority of women and girls in their everyday lives and relationships. This is also be one of the reasons why there are virtually no laws in a majority of countries that is able to provide recognition and access to justice for survivors of such violence.

Get the stats! Recognise the issue. Petition your government to start collecting data on violence against women affected by ICT!

1) Locate
* Many governments are recognising the power of ICT to facilitate and improve their work. They usually have official websites, and some public officials even have blogs and Twitter accounts to reach the internet-connected sections of the public.
* Do a search and find out the contact details of the Ministry involved. For example, Ministry of Women, Ministry of Telecommunications, or even the Prime Minister or President's Office. Find their email address, blog address or Twitter account.

2) Petition
* Send them a petition today! You can send an email, write a letter to the editor or even post a tweet!

* EMAIL
** Write an email that says something like:

Subject: Petition to include [cyberstalking, online harassment and privacy violation] in data collection on violence against women
Dear Minister
Violence against women is a serious problem in our country. With the increased development of the internet and mobile phones, it is also starting to give violence against women a new dimension. As a person living in this country, I am petitioning for you to include incidences of [cyberstalking, online harassment and privacy violation etc] in current efforts to collect data on violence against women. Please raise it as an issue in the next parliamentary sitting.
Sincerely,

** Forward the email to 10 people and local mailing lists, and ask them to do the same.
** Send a copy of your email to ideas@takebackthetech.net, and we will post it up as part of the global collective effort to improve data collection on cases involving violence against women and ICTS

* LETTER TO THE EDITOR
** Write an open letter to your minister, and address it as a letter to the editor of the most popular newspaper where you are.
** Add a personal story, experience or recent event to ground the point. Use any of the content raised above to get you started.
** Send a copy of the letter to ideas@takebackthetech.net, and we'll post it up here.

* TWEET
** If your Minister has a Twitter account, "follow" her/him. Make full use of this platform to engage with your representative in government.
** Send her/him a Tweet something like "Start collecting stats on cyberstalking etc. Pls raise in Parliament."
** Tag it as #takebackthetech, and add a call for your network to retweet the msg at the end. Your tweets will be published on the right column of this site if your account is public.
** If your Twitter account is private, you don't have to accept your Minister's request to "follow" you. You can still send tweets to them and they'll see it.

Take Back The Tech! Get the stats. Make the connection between ICT and violence against women visible. Turn the tide!

[creative-radio] Take Back the Tech!

Hi all,

Today is the first day of the 16 Days of Activism against VAW. I'd like to invite you all to use your media outlets to get involved in the Take Back the Tech! campaign, which involves 16 daily actions aimed at combatting VAW online. Here is the first day's action:

Day 1 | 25 November - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women | View, Share, Respond!

Take Back The Tech! starts today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

In 1993, violence against women was formally recognised by countries all over the world as a violation of human rights, through the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women by the United Nations General Assembly [http://www.unhchr.ch/huridocda/huridoca.nsf/%28symbol%29/a.res.48.104.en].

Development in new forms of information and communications technologies such as mobile phones and the internet have brought with it new dimensions to existing forms of violence against women, such as online harassment and cyberstalking. At the same time, it also carries with it tremendous potential for change and transformation. For example, by enabling survivors to connect with help, forming networks and movements to advocate for women's rights, documenting and making visible the different forms of violence and more.
This year, Take Back The Tech! calls for action that defends our right to freedom and expression and information. To end violence against women, we need to be able to speak up, document violation, make them known, share our ideas and thoughts and pass on what we know.

Kickstart your campaign by starting a conversation on how we can take control of technology to end violence against women. Start by sharing the Take Back The Tech! video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCwK8Y1Unr4

1. View
* Watch the Take Back The Tech! short animated video here.

2. Reflect, respond & converse!
* What ideas come to mind on how you can take control of technology?
* If the situation happened to you or someone you know, what is the one thing you can do to help stop the violence? It doesn't have to be a grand solution, but every action that is taken is one step towards ending violence against women.
* Add your thoughts as a comment to the video on YouTube or on this page. Respond to comments by others and keep the conversation going.

3. Share
* Harness the networked environment of ICT to spread the message. Make a commitment to inform at least 10 people about the connection between violence against women and ICT today. Let's try and hit 10,000 views of the Take Back The Tech! video by Dec 10 - International Human Rights Day!
* Share the video with 10 different people and ask them to do the same. Email it, post it, embed it, do whatever you feel most comfortable with or have access to. Keep it going.
* Use your thought or possible action as the subject title of your message or post. E.g. "I'll call back a stalker who is harassing my friend".
* Here are some ideas on how to share the video:
** Email: Send the link to your contacts. Include at least 1 mailing list and copy ideas@takebackthetech.net. Ask them to do the same.
** Mobile phone: Download the video and send it to 10 friends. Ask them to do the same.
** Facebook: Post it on your Facebook status and tag 10 friends. Include @takebackthetech campaign
** Twitter: Tweet the link and ask for 10 retweets. Include the hashtag #takebackthetech
** Youtube: Re-upload the video on your YouTube account. Or click it as your "favourite". Invite your contacts to embed it.
** Blog: Embed it on your blog and invite your blogroll to do the same. Start a conversation between you!

Take Back The Tech! Exercise your right to expression to end violence against women. View, share, respond - and keep the conversation going!

Reminder from:   creative-radio Yahoo! Group

Title:   Buy Nothing Day

Date:   Thursday November 25, 2010
Time:   All Day
Repeats:   This event repeats every year.
Notes:   For 24 hours on Buy Nothing Day, November 25, we remember that no one was born to shop,

up by the more than 3,500 jammers who took part in last year's biggest
ever Buy Nothing Day? Set up credit card cut ups, don white coats and
vaccinate against affluenza, give out free samples of nothing - anything
to show that the best things in life are free. You can find more ideas
