[creative-radio] Free Speech Radio News faces closure 12/20

I am writing you with an urgent request. Free Speech Radio News faces imminent
closure on December 20 if we fail to raise enough funds to operate. You can
read more about why we find ourselves in this situation at FSRN.org/crisis .

We are working around the clock to try to keep FSRN on the air. You can help by
donating generously today.

We think this 10-year-old organization is worth saving and we know you do too.
Here are just a couple reasons why:

--FSRN has brought you thousands of daily newscasts containing tens of
thousands of community voices, highlighting the marginalized communities most
affected by social and economic policy changes. We have more than 150 reporters
in 30 states and 50 countries - together, we have reshaped the way critical
issues are represented in news.

--FSRN is the only US-based radio newscast to have local reporters on the
groundin the tribal areas of Pakistan, where Western journalists are banned.
We've brought you hundreds of breaking newsand in-depth featuresfrom this
conflict zone, airing stories no other journalism outlet has covered. Stories
that elevate the voices of women, youthand religious minorities, conveying their
struggles and their determination.

--FSRN is the only US-based radio newscast with a native Gazan, born and raised
in the refugee camps, filing from the occupied territory. Rami Almeghari's
reports, along with our reporter in the West Bank, Ghassan Bannouraprovide
insight about the Middle East conflict and how everyday people are affected.

--FSRN brought you daily coverage, for many months, of two major events this
year: the earthquake in Haitiand the BP oil disaster. Ansel Herz and Dolores M.
Bernal were on the ground, recording the voices of displaced and the injured,
and challenging officials -- including Bill Clinton-- on their slow response,
when Haitians lacked even the simplest of aid, like food and water. Following
the BP oil disaster, Zoe Sullivan examined the impact on the United Houma
Nation and Vietnamese immigrants. And FSRN anchor Dorian Merina interviewed many
people on the ground, including one of the first people to challenge BPand the
government's assessment of just how much oil was gushing into the Gulf.

There are so many other examples of extraordinary reporters and critical
stories. We'll continue to highlight them as we work to save FSRN. Here's what
you can do to help:

#1 - DONATIONS.I know we have asked for "emergency donations" before, and many
of you have generously responded. But this is about as bad as things have
been at FSRN. Please give generously so that we cankeep producing the
newscast after December 20th.CLICK HERE TO DONATE AND HELP KEEP FSRN ALIVE!

#2-SPREAD THE WORD! Tell your friends and networks to donate. Send them
tofsrn.org/crisis to find out more about the situation and donate. Send this to
your twitter feeds, facebook pages, and old-fashioned social networks. Sign up
for our Twitter feed and retweet our messages. Forward this email!

#3 - HELP FSRN EARN FREE CREDITS ON SPOT.US Spot.us is a new model of
community-funded journalism. We are working to raise funds for our December
audio documentaries. You can help raise $10 by taking two surveys. No money
needed and the surveys only take a couple minutes to fill out.

Over the past several years, FSRN has adapted to budget cuts by reducing
staff and cutting staff and reporter pay. Yet we've continued to bring you a
daily domestic and international newscast that has only increased in quality.
We will work to save FSRN for listeners and for independent journalists around
the world, and hope you will too.

Thank you for your support!

Catherine Komp
On behalf of FSRN Staff

[creative-radio] Internews Taps Afghanistan Cellular Network to link 41 community radio stations

RT @creative_radio: @Internews Taps Afghanistan Cellular Network
http://ow.ly/3mcMg
up to 24 channels using "Radio over IP" for 41 community radio stations
[excerpts]
*KABUL, Afghanistan* — The telecommunications sector in Afghanistan is
vibrant with four main telecom operators providing cellular telephone
coverage to even the most remote corners of the mountainous country.
[...]
The Internews Network, a California-based nonprofit NGO that seeks to
develop independent local media around the globe, launched Salam Watandar
("Hello, Countryman") in Kabul in 2004, providing news, current affairs,
educational and cultural programming in the Dari and Pashtu languages. Its
programs are carried by 41 local independent and community stations in 27 of
Afghanistan's 34 provinces.
"In the past, we had to rely on a one-way free-to-air channel on Eutelsat
Hot Bird 6 to get our programming to our affiliates, with no real way for
them to have immediate two-way communication with us or with partner network
stations," said Charmaine Anderson, Internews country director for
Afghanistan.
"But now that a local Afghan wireless company is providing us with 2 Mbps of
bandwidth on their cellular telephone backbone, we have two-way
communications with all of our affiliates. Not only does this make it easier
to feed network programming, but now we can share content and communications
in real time.
[...]
The first thing to understand about Salam Watandar network communications is
that they are transported using "Radio over IP," or RoIP. In other words,
all audio is converted to digital, IP-based files, so that they can be
efficiently transmitted over the cellular telephone backbone.
[...]
the files are distributed in real-time to affiliates, who are also equipped
with Ubiquiti Bullets and IQOYA *Link boxes. Because the network is
IP-based, the Kabul hub can send down other programs at the same time and
support two-way voice calls. It can also receive content coming in from the
affiliates.
[...]
Internews began testing the RoIP cellular telephone backbone in April 2010,
and it is changing the way the network does business. No longer are
affiliates passive receivers of information: They are now active members who
contribute to overall programming. This two-way reach will vastly improve
Salam Watandar's ability to cover breaking news, and make the service more
relevant to listeners across Afghanistan.

[creative-radio] Take Back the Tech! Day 9 | Be safe online | Share a strategy!

Hi all,

Once again, if you could somehow incorporate this into your news cycles. And check out the last few days actions - yesterday's was creating a Twitter paper on online VAW, so there may be some interesting results for your country/ region.

Sonia

There are increasing reports of women and girls who are subjected to harassment and cyberstalking through the use of technology. Harassment and cyberstalking can take many forms. For example, receiving repeated harassing and threatening messages online and through SMS. Or the harasser pretending to be the victim, and posting sexualised messages on websites, forums or to her contact list. Sometimes this is accompanied by her real name, phone number and sometimes even home address, moving the harassment from online to the material world.

Cyberstalkers usually aims to gather as much information about a person as possible, to track and monitor her movements and activity and to instil fear in her or to cause her harm. Like many forms of violence against women, the harasser or abuser is often someone that is known to the survivor. The UN estimates that 95% of aggressive behaviour, harassment, abusive language and denigrating images in online spaces are aimed at women, and come from partners or former partners [http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/vaw/SGstudyvaw.htm].

This is probably because people they are the people who knows most about the survivor. They can easily access into email accounts and other online spaces by guessing passwords or by having the opportunity to install spyware and other kinds of tracking software into the person's computer or mobile phone. In unequal relationships, one partner can aim to exert control over the other by controlling her communication channels - who she speaks to, when, about what etc. Even when harassers are not people who are close to us, we sometimes unwittingly post a lot of personal information about ourselves online and don't pay enough attention to how we can better protect our privacy.

How can we make our online experience a safer one? What are some good communication and online practices that we can undertake to make our digital and communication spaces more secure? Share what you know!

1. What's your strategy?
* Share or think of 10, 5, 3 or thing that we can do to be safer online and in our use of communication tools. They can be simple actions, concrete tips or suggestions of tools and applications.
* Think of strategies that can be applied generally, or to specific communication channels and tools, such as mobile phones, social networking spaces, emails etc.
* Here are 10 tips to start with:
** Choose good passwords. Don't use birthdays or names of pets and family members.
** Get to know the privacy options on social networking sites and photo-sharing applications.
** Never post your personal phone number or home address online
** Switch off your bluetooth unless you're actively using it
** Regularly download and delete private photos on your mobile phone
** If you're harassed, keep everything! Don't delete messages, chat logs etc.
** When you breakup, make your last act together as deleting private videos and photos.
** Do a search on yourself and your home address and number.
** Log-out from applications when you leave your desk or computer.
** If you're harassed, talk to a trusted friend.

2. Share it & grow the list!
* Share your strategy with the people you have contact with today.
* Post a strategy every hour. Post it as your status message on social networking sites like Facebook, or on your instant messenger like Yahoo! or Skype. Or if you're on Twitter, tweet or retweet a strategy every hour, with the hashtag #takebackthetech. Start a conversation!
* At the end of the day, copy and paste your list and add them as a comment to this page, and share your action with other campaigners and readers of this site.
* Or start a chain-mail and grow the list! Copy and paste this daily action and send it to 10 friends as an email. Add your own strategy to the 10 above, and ask them to do the same. Copy your email to ideas@takebackthetech.net and we'll post your list on this page.

Take back the tech! Protect our right to communicate freely and safely, without violence or harassment. Share a strategy!
