I just noticed your email via Creative Radio and thought I would send you an email back. I am an Irish radio producer with a strong interest in Community Radio and I just, last week, arrived back from a five-week stay in your beautiful country where I was recording material for two radio documentaries on the impact that Climate Change is having in Tanzania, which are for broadcast here in Ireland in a couple of weeks. I did visit northern Tanzania while there, recording material in Moshi, Arusha and Longido, but I did not make it near to your area. I had hoped to make some contact with Community Radio Stations while there but, in the end, did not manage to do so as getting around the country and recording the material I needed to record took quite a bit of time.

Anyway i am just writing to say how pleased I am to discover your station (I followed the link) and your work.

[creative-radio] Cité Soleil in mourning for murdered community radio station manager

Reporters Without Borders is deeply saddened by the news that radio
journalist *Jean Liphète Nelson* was gunned down yesterday in Cité Soleil,
the poorest neighbourhood of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The manager of Radio Boukman, http://www.radioboukman.com/ a community and
educational radio station based in Cité Soleil, Nelson was widely respected
for his humanitarian commitment to serving the inhabitants of this
politically sensitive district. Aged 38, he was the father of five children.

"We had several meetings with Nelson and the staff of *Radio Boukman*, the
station he helped to found in June 2006," Reporters Without Borders said.
"He was totally committed to his community and had told us of his desire to
change the perception of Cité Soleil, which is too often seen as just the
bastion of criminal gangs.

"Through *Radio Boukman* and the various social programmes he oversaw, he
wanted to improve the situation and status of a segment of the population
that tends to be ostracized. Radio Boukman also played a crucial role as a
relay of information during the January 2010 earthquake.

heritage. We also hope that justice will be quickly rendered to Nelson and
his family and that he will receive the tribute he deserves from the

Nelson and four other people were driving in a *Radio Boukman* vehicle in
Bois Neuf, a part of Cité Soleil, when they came under fire from four
heavily armed individuals. One of the passengers, Alexandre Marcus, was
killed on spot. Nelson's young brother, Jean Robert Nelson, was hit in the
leg. Nelson, who was also hit, was taken to a Médecins Sans Frontières
hospital where he died of his injuries soon afterwards. The news of his
death caused tension in Cité Soleil.

There is as yet no evidence that Nelson's murder was definitely linked to
his work. But this possibility must not be ruled out on the grounds that
there has of late been an increase in this kind of violence in the capital.
Nelson was a well known and recognisable figure in Cité Soleil, where and
his radio station may have threatened the interests of certain criminal
gangs.

popular songs while Masani waits for his brothers to land the daily catch.*

Radio Namaskar http://radionamaskar.org/ (the traditional Indian greeting),
on the air since February 2010, offers much more than entertainment to the
2,000 active fishers from a 10,000-strong settlement of mud hut dwellers
along Odisha state's Chandrabhaga coastline on the Bay of Bengal.

Cyclonic storms often threaten the fragile vessels of the fishers, and
their lives. Television weather forecasts are unreliable because power
supply in these parts is erratic.

"Radio Namaskar broadcasts high wind and cyclone warnings at short
intervals; its range extends 35 km out into the sea," says Gengri Mania,
40, who carries a radio when he accompanies his brother-in-law on fishing
trips.

Heavy rains and high floods often leave families stranded and huddling on
rooftops, sometimes for days together, as happened in the Gop
administrative block in September 2011.

"Radio Namaskar's dedicated mobile phone line was a life-saver," says Ali
Akbar Shah, 37, whose house was among the first to be hit by a huge body of
water when the Kushabhadra river embankment was breached.

Shah managed to grab a brace of seven mobile phone sets from his mobile
repair shop with which he kept up staedy communication with the CR on all
the three days that he and his neighbours were stranded on rooftops.

years ago, the University of the Philippines (UP)'s campus radio has
evolved into a community broadcaster, serving as the voice of the people. *

DZUP <http://www.dzup.org/>1602 Khz, the UP's radio station, does not just
air the voice of students and the academic community but also allows
grassroots groups and the marginalised to use it as a platform for social
change.

Josefina Santos, DZUP's station manager, says the radio station started in
1957 as an "an experiment" of the UP's college of engineering and the
college of arts and sciences.

The station played a crucial role during the leftist unrest in the country
and allowed students to voice their concerns during the years before the
1972 declaration of martial law by then president Ferdinand Marcos,
cracking down on protests and agitations.

"Sometime in the late 60s until the 70s, before martial law, it really
became the voice of the university and a dissenting voice of the people who
really were for social change," says Santos.

"When martial law was declared, one of the first stations that the military
went after was DZUP. They destroyed all the equipment and UP went off the
air," says Santos.

level, this can only be a model for us to trigger the dialogue on CR and

We needs to learn a successful experience in connecting mobile phone
directly to the online radio****

Can it be a bilingual or trilingual media platform - I am preferred to make
it in Sinhala, Tamil, and English? ****

Any simple or successful experience in reaching the civil society via
mobile phones. We too have some successful initiatives funded by ICTA. ****

Does anyone have a best way of using online platform for dialogue with
civil society? it can be forum, blog, social media or anything. ****

Any experience in recording automatically the phone calls, Skype calls an,
ect so that civil society can participate in programme making. We have
initiative in SL called *techkatha*. I am keen on more cases. ****

I am planning to have at least 30 regional journalists/*Nenasala* operators
(Rural access centre) who can communicate and contribute us in sharing
public concerns with us. ****

Since this is going to be a muti-lingual platform, any user-friendly way of
engaging podcasting in a manner that we can categorise podcasting according
to the language. ****

Any experience in transmitting the webcasting through a FM radio channel? **

What could be the best streamer? ****

What could be the software's that could be used for this purpose? ****
