Use radio to pursue community development

http://news.peacefmonline.com/news/200911/31224.php

[excerpt]

Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), has
stressed that radio must be used as a tool for community mobilization and
development.

Addressing a durbar to mark the 10th anniversary celebration of Radio
Peace in Winneba, Mr Adu-Gyamfi commended the station for its excellent
performance over the years.

He said Radio Peace broadcasts 80 percent of its programmes in Mfantse,
Awutu and Effutu and the remaining 20 percent in English, which makes it
to have a sense of belonging.

Russian independent media facing testing times

[excerpt]

Journalists from small independent radio stations across Russia have been
told they must go online and embrace social networking to help them
survive.

The Yekaterinburg Independent Radio Festival has heard that many radio
stations are struggling with few staff and reduced incomes.

They've been urged to expand on to digital platforms and reach new audiences.

Climate Catastrophe

Pakistan is one of those countries, which make comparatively insignificant contribution to the causes of climate change but are extremely vulnerable to its effects. From coastal populations in the south to those relying on snow-fed rivers for agriculture in the north have become vulnerable communities. Agricultural productivity has been hit hard by the changes in land and water regimes. According to the officials, dry lands areas in arid and semi-arid regions are most vulnerable and affected agriculture productivity, putting the country's food security at risk. The country intends to develop efficient water management systems, create mass awareness campaign and change cropping patterns. However these measures need additional financial resources that are already scarce. Tragic part of the story is that the country's vulnerability to climate change is inflamed by apparent failures in governance, non-sustainable use of resources and ignorance.

[creative-radio] Low-Power Radio and What the Media Won't Tell You About the Media

Low-Power Radio and What the Media Won't Tell You About the Media

Saturday 07 November 2009

by: Amber Sands, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

[excerpt]

http://www.truthout.org/110709E

There's a classic problem for progressives who want to change the media:
the media doesn't like to cover itself. Especially not when it comes to
issues that challenge the status quo of corporate control. It's like
turning to the military for news about the peace movement, or asking Big
Oil to report on climate change legislation.

So you may not have heard much about the grassroots effort to create
hundreds of new, non-commercial radio stations. Overcoming nine years of
opposition from the broadcasting lobby, the Local Community Radio Act is
on the verge of a vote in the House of Representatives.

The bill would expand low-power FM (LPFM) radio, first introduced by the
Federal Communications Commission in 2000. Media activists and community
groups nationwide demanded this access to the airwaves to combat the
deregulation that concentrated media ownership into fewer hands. The FCC
began licensing low-power stations between the larger ones on the radio
dial, but Congress promptly hobbled the low-power service with
restrictions.

If you're wondering why Congress would step on the toes of the agency that
regulates communications, well, ask the media - they may not cover media
regulation, but they spend millions influencing it.

Fearing competition from stations that would carry original, local
programming, broadcasters claimed that LPFM stations might interfere with
the signals of full-power stations. The broadcasting lobby demanded that
Congress widen the required distance between the radio frequencies of an
existing full-power station and a would-be LPFM. Congress made the spacing
requirements so vast that only rural areas can meet the criteria for a
low-power license.

[creative-radio] Journalism between hope and trembling: the example of the Philippines

Raymund Villanueva still remembers July 2 2006 with horror. In the early
morning that Sunday, the little broadcasting center of the community radio
station „Radyo Cagayano", which he helped building up, was being burned
down completely. At about two in the morning, eight mummed soldiers
infiltrated the premises in the small town of Baggao in the Northern
Philippines, captivated and gagged the employees and ignited the entire
radio station with petrol. Radyo Cagayano had just started broadcasting a
few weeks ago and had especially stood up for the interests of local
farmers. Until today, Radyo Cagayano has been unable to pick up his work
again due to a murder on one of his employees and heavy reprisal. Raymund
Villanueva supports the broadcasting station with technical equipment and
know-how, after his own radio station has been prohibited by the
government on the day of the emergency act of February 24 2006.
