[creative-radio] Toilets save eyesight, new study confirms

Toilets save eyesight, new study confirms

November 19 is world toilet day - and what the world needs now is more of
them.

CALGARY, Nov. 16 /CNW/ - Why in the world is an organization dedicated to
the treatment and prevention of blindness spending money on toilets?
"Because believe it or not, toilets and blindness are directly
connected," says Pat Ferguson, President & CEO of Operation Eyesight. "Proper
sanitation and clean water are in short supply in the developing world and
that contributes to a high rate of unnecessary blindness and other serious
health problems."
A new study conducted by Zambia's Ministry of Health and supported by
Operation Eyesight found that trachoma was 28 per cent more likely to strike
in households that do not have proper toilet facilities. The study, which
covered five districts in Zambia, found that up to 80 per cent of the
households surveyed do not have toilets.
"Trachoma is caused by a bacterium and is easily spread from person to
person and by flies which breed on human waste," says Ferguson. "So it's no
surprise that proper sewage disposal helps to prevent this horrible disease."
Trachoma is the world's leading cause of preventable blindness. In parts
of Zambia and Kenya where Operation Eyesight supports development projects
designed to eliminate trachoma, up to 30 per cent of children age one to nine
years are infected.
Without treatment, trachoma causes a person's eyelids to turn inward so
that the eyelashes constantly scrape the eyeball. It is extremely painful and
can lead to permanent blindness. The World Health Organization estimates more
than 80 million people are affected by trachoma and about 8 million suffer
the advanced stages of the disease and are visually impaired.
Operation Eyesight's trachoma projects are designed to both treat and
permanently eliminate trachoma. The projects follow the World Health
Organization-endorsed SAFE strategy which includes Surgery to treat the late
stage of the disease, Antibiotics to eliminate infection, Face washing and
hygiene promotion, and Environmental change including water wells and
latrines to prevent re-infection.
To be effective, the ambitious projects require construction of thousands
of latrines, drilling hundreds of wells, mass distribution of antibiotics and
training thousands of citizens in hygiene and well management.
"These projects are large and costly," says Ferguson, "But the benefits
are enormous. In addition to preventing unnecessary blindness, the SAFE
strategy dramatically reduces other serious diseases, helps keep children in
school and saves women the need to walk many kilometers in search of water,
which is usually unfit for human consumption."
Operation Eyesight is working in close partnership with the governments
of Kenya and Zambia and is a member of GET2020, the World Health Organization
initiative to eradicate trachoma from the entire world by 2020. For more
information about Operation Eyesight's trachoma projects, visit
http://www.operationeyesight.com.

Operation Eyesight is a Canadian international development organization
dedicated to preventing and treating blindness throughout the world for more
than 45 years - primarily in South Asia and Africa. We help local medical
professionals provide comprehensive, sustainable eye care and community
development for the people of the world who can least afford it. Since 1963,
Operation Eyesight has restored sight to more than two million people and
provided blindness prevention services to nearly 33 million others. For more

The shiny antenna stands 20 metres from a table inside an enclosed room.
There is mast or dish directed skywards, just an open briefcase on which
the main kit is placed.

As a technician fiddles with a dial, switches and knobs at the control
panel, a soundman closely monitors the development.

A third man paces up the room with a hand held palm-sized transistor
radio, coaxing it to life.

Onguti, a Kenyan-born Canadian, has just broken new ground. His company,
Conexe Systems Inc, registered in Manitoba, Canada, has found a solution
which could revolutionalise operations of radio and TV sub-sectors.

"We have developed the smallest radio station in the world. It is packed
in a suitcase which weighs 18 kilogrammes" he enthuses.

The germ of the radio station research was born two years ago when Onguti
returned home after more than ten years in Canada.

Similar-sized radio stations have been developed elsewhere, especially for
the military and other field organisations, but the technology by Onguti
is simplified to be more compact and cost effective.

[...]

Although some remote areas are listed as having registered FM stations,
many do not broadcast as there is no reception of FM radio signals.

Although Wantox's FM stations range is limited, the designers say they
have more powerful sets which can be received over 100 kilometres away.

"We are researching on a station with a range which can cover almost the
whole country. This is challenging, given the different topographical
layout of the country but we will succeed," he adds.

Conexe Systems is planning to invest about Sh1.12 billion in Nairobi to
set up a factory for production of the FM radio stations.

The company is in the final stages of manufacturing a briefcase TV station
that could greatly reduce costs in broadcasting.

The Wantox FM radio station has a transmitter with five channels for
inputs such as laptop, Ipod, and a portable CD player, five tape recorder
player microphones and a telephone hook up provision for phone in
programmes.

Onguti, 44, left for Canada in 1992 and enrolled in York University,
Toronto where he got a degree in sociology and later a diploma in
sociology.

The radio station, he says, is the brainchild of his partners, Yves and
Louise Maynard, the founders of Conexe Inc, established in 2004.

[creative-radio] NSW, Australia: Binjang radio takes first steps forward

http://www.wellingtontimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/binjang-radio-takes-first-steps-forward/1678494.aspx

[excerpt]

A lot of people have been taking interest in the Binjang Community Radio
after its first annual general meeting was held last week.

A number of residents turned up to the meeting, however with the club
consisting of 75 members, secretary treasurer Terry Hoffman was a little
disappointed there were not more present.

"I though we would get more at the meeting," he said.

"However there were a lot of apologies put in which means there is a lot
of interest but they just couldn't make it to the meeting that night."

Michael White stood down from the president's position making room for
Mumbil resident Marcus Hanney to be voted into the top job.

"The Wellington Rotary Club has provided $4000 as start-up capital," Mr
Hoffman said.

"The station is also now a member of the Community Broadcasting
Association of Australia."

[...]

The station is seeking a team of volunteers as on-air presenters,
producers and administrators.

"Anyone who is interested in volunteering, even if they would like to have
half an hour on air or as a clerical assistant should come forward," Mr
Hoffman said.

"It is all voluntary work; there is no paid labour at all.

"We would like to get as many members as we can; the more members we have
when we apply for the broadcasting licence the better it looks."

Mr Hoffman said the committee was hoping to see the station broadcasting
by the middle of next year.

Anyone who wishes to become involved can contact Marcus Hanney on 6846
7459 or Terry Hoffman on 6845 1025.

New community Radio Broadcasting For Goolwa, South Australia

http://thegovmonitor.com/civil_society_and_democratic_renewal/governance/australia-highlights-new-community-radio-broadcasting-for-goolwa-15149.html

[excerpt]

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has made spectrum
available for a new community radio broadcasting service in Goolwa, South
Australia.

Two aspirant community radio groups are active in Goolwa and currently
operate on temporary community broadcasting licences, alternating on the
one frequency.

'Spectrum congestion in the Goolwa region means that the ACMA has been
unable to identify more than one suitable frequency to accommodate
interest in community broadcasting in the area,' said Chris Chapman,
Chairman of the ACMA.

'After considering all the information before it, the ACMA believes that
an additional community radio broadcasting service would add to the
diversity of radio broadcasting services available at Goolwa. In addition,
new services of this type are likely to have a positive effect on
innovative programming and coverage of matters of local significance.'

Now that the licence area plan has been varied, the ACMA will commence the
allocation process for the long-term community broadcasting licence at
Goolwa.

Since Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel
Prize in 2006 for their work on microcredit lending, a number of
institutions working on similar issues have received a great deal of
attention and press coverage. One such organization is Kiva, which was
founded in 2005 by Matt and Jessica Flannery. Kiva prides itself on serving
as a link "between small individual lenders and small individual borrowers",
and on their website visitors can select the person they would like to
support. Recently, this personal connection came under question by David
Roodman, a research fellow at the Center for Global Development. In a
lengthy blog post, Roodman questioned the direct one-to-one relationship
between the lender and the borrower, while remaining largely positive about
Kiva's mission. Some commentators have continued to raise the question of
transparency, and in the wake of the news, Kiva amended a statement on their
website to state simply "Kiva connects people through lending to alleviate
poverty." This controversy has not been bad for Kiva, and the president of
Kiva, Premal Shah, commented this week "If anything, it has drawn more
people into the nuance and beauty of this model of microfinance. It's highly
imperfect, but it's like a 3 ½ year-old child: it has a lot of potential."

The first link will take users to an article from this Monday's New York
Times which talks about this recent controversy surrounding Kiva. The second
link leads to an article from the Mercury News that provides additional
background on the nature of microfinance programs and their mission. Moving
on, the third link leads visitors to David Roodman's original blog post
about Kiva. The fourth link will whisk users away to a post on creating a
"real marketplace for development" by Dennis Whittle, the CEO of Global
Giving. The fifth link leads to the Microfinance Gateway homepage. Here
visitors can learn about how microfinance works in different countries
around the world, read papers from their online library, and peruse
announcements from the microfinance industry. The last link leads to the

success stories featured here. [KMG]

Police manhandle, arrest journalist in Ghana

http://www.afriquejet.com/news/africa-news/police-manhandle,-arrest-journalist-in-ghana-2009111438164.html

Police officers in 'Wa', the capital of Upper West region of Ghana,
allegedly manhandled and detained James Donkor, a journalist with 'Radio
Progress', a community radio, for taking a photograph of a man the po
licemen had allegedly tied to an electric pole, the sub-regional rights
body, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), said Friday.

According to MFWA, the incident happened at the 'Wa Polytechnic' where the
journalist had gone to cover a function.

'One of the policemen pushed me, when I enquired about the treatment that
was being meted out to the young man,' Donkor told the sub-regional rights
body.

The journalist was later physically assaulted, subjected to rigorous
bodily search and handcuffed before being detained in a police cell for
about two and half hours.

Ghana Journalist Association called the arrest, handcuffing and detention
of Don kor by the police as 'unfortunate, unprofessional and a breach of
his fundament al human right and of Freedom of the Press.'

Meanwhile, Mahmud Khalid, the Regional Minster, reportedly condemned the
attack on the journalist and ordered investigations.
