Is a show by and about women from culturally and linguistically diverse
backgrounds with a commitment to progressive politics.

Is aimed at ethnic women and people interested in issues by and about

otherwise under-represented by the media.

Aims to represent the diversity of issues affecting women from culturally
and linguistically diverse backgrounds internationally and locally.

Presents information, analysis and comment on issues that are initiated,
facilitated or driven by women from culturally and linguistically diverse
and Indigenous backgrounds.

Prioritises the voices of women from marginalised sectors and communities.

JOY 94.9 is reaching out to new audiences as far as Albany, Townsville and
Whyalla with a new national GLBTIQ news radio program.

The 5-minute news program contains aims to highlight headlines targeted at
the Australian queer community.

The QNN (Q-mmunity Network News is part of Melbourne based LGBTQ radio
station JOY 94.9 and already has been picked up by 50 community stations
across the shared Community Radio Network (CRN).

"It's about getting the message of celebration and information and
education out as broadly as we possibly can," said Stephen Duns, president
of JOY 94.9.

"Mainstream news services do not adequately meet the needs of our
community, and QNN will provide this essential service for the diverse
lesbian and gay communities around the country."

Not to mention mainstream media is BORING! I hope the team at JOY 94.9
will offer something us insights that are fresh and thought provoking, and
not just another rehash of less than stellar news coverage.

QNN will be aired locally in Melbourne on JOY 94.9 at 7.05pm Monday and
10.30am Saturday, or you can pick it up from the station's website.

The national broadcasts can be heard at 11.55am Wednesday on participating
stations.

Mumbai: A two-day workshop on Community Radio (CR) will be organised from
November 26 at the Kamla Raheja Institute of Architecture and
Environmental study here, organisers said today.

During the workshop titled 'Community Radio - Tuning into Diversity',
participants will have the opportunity to hear first-hand experience of
speakers, including practitioners who are already running CR stations as
well as experts on the regulatory, technical and other aspects of running
a station, one of the organisers of Comet Media Foundation said.

Some of the speakers include Aditeshwar Seth of Gram Vaani, IIT Delhi,
Amol Goje of Vasundhara Vahini Community Radio, Baramati (Maharashtra),
Anuja Shukla from Radio Bundelkhand Development Alternatives at Orchha
(UP), Bharati Ahire of Radio Ujjas of Kutch Mahila Vikas Sanghatan, Bhuj
(Gujarat), Ram Bhat of Maraa, Bangalore, Sajan Veniyoor of Community Radio
Forum, an India-wide network and Richard Rego, Radio Sarang, Mangalore.

The workshop has been organised by Comet Media Foundation in partnership
with the Media Information and Communication Centre of India, Frederich
Ebert Stiftung and Centre for the Advancement of Philanthropy.

IF YOU'VE been hanging out to tune into 4FCR for the past four months you
might not have to wait too much longer.

Fraser Coast Community Radio is hoping to hear by the end of the week
whether it has been successful in gaining a $10,000 grant to help the
station get back on its feet.

The volunteer radio group is still recouping its losses after a fire tore
through its Hunter Street premises in July.

Office equipment was replaced, however the studio was destroyed and the
group forced to move to a building on Halcro Street, Pialba.

In August, the station went back on air but only broadcasting pre-recorded
music.

Fraser Coast Community Radio president Janice Warren said the group was in
the middle of setting up at the new station, however volunteers would be
working through renovations.

THE femLINKPACIFIC launched its Community Radio program in Nasigatoka
Village with a message that women should not be silent on violence against
women.

FemLINKPACIFIC co-ordinator Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls launched the program
yesterday.

Ms Bhagwan Rolls said a representative of the Nailarube Women's club from
the Nasigatoka Village said women knew violence existed in their community
and families but were too afraid to speak out and share their stories,
even among themselves.

"The community radio broadcasts have been found to be an important channel
for women to speak out against violence, and this is indeed in line with
this year's theme 'Commit, Demand and Act to End Violence against Women',"
said Mrs Bhagwan-Rolls

In doing a bit of research for the upcoming work on the Senate bill, I learned of the passing of Fred Schultz. Fred and his daughter Marcella started the Indiana Historic Radio Museum, and WNRL-LP. Marcella had passed away a few years before. This father-daughter team were one of my greatest inspirations in low power radio.

WNRL-LP is a lovely radio station that was founded by the one room museum of radios in ligonier indiana. They put the actual studio in the local high school a few hours away. Fred was a retired state trooper with a wry sense of humor, amazing stamina and an incredible love for old fashioned radios. Marcella was a pitbull of an activist and all around go-getter who was more or less singlehandedly responsible for forcing the FCC to act on the "appendix B applications," which were eligible for LPFMs under the original rules but cut out by Congress. After calling non-stop to her Senator, Evan Bayh, and educating the staff on the issue, Bayhs office took an interest and followed up with the FCC to insist that they process the Appendix B applications and give them an opportunity to modify their applications. WNRL- LP and dozens of other stations were eventually granted as a result of her tenacity.

For people that think low power radio is just a bunch of radicals, check out this youtube video of WNRL and see what community radio is like in a small town in Northeast Indiana... The beauty of low power radio is that it reflects the people of a place, and the people who start stations are often people who just love their communities.

The station seems to have survived the transition well, and is now owned by the school district of West Noble, Indiana. They are webcasting now, and seem to have a lot of high school students and some community members involved. And the schedule says that they still have some old-time radio on the air...
