[creative-radio] CKUT radio: Popular protests in Palestine

* CKUT radio: Popular protests in Palestine
interview with Palestinian writer/author Ali Abunimah

by Stefan Christoff

Listen to an interview with Palestinian writer/author Ali Abunimah on the
growing popular protest movement against Israeli apartheid in Gaza, throughout
the West Bank and particularly in the agricultural village of Bil?in.

Popular protests are growing in the West Bank, pointing to an expanding,
organized grassroots response to the Israeli military occupation at the
community-based level in Palestine, a direct response to the realities of
Israeli apartheid beyond the Palestinian Authority politicians walking the
halls of political power in D.C. pushing forward a negotiation process that has
lead to little results.

Bil'in village's creative protest tactics have drawn international attention
and endorsements from global political voices such as The Elders group lead-by
South Africa's Desmond Tutu. Bil'in the film has also been the focus of films
such as Bil'in Habibti, an progressive Israeli film that documents the popular
struggle against the wall in Bil'in. Beyond Palestine, Bil'in launched a
historic lawsuit in Montreal, Quebec against two corporations, Green Park and
Green Mount International, who are currently constructing Israeli-only
settlements on the Palestinian lands of Bil'in, lands stolen via the Israeli
apartheid wall.

[creative-radio] NEW AUDIO TOOL: Hindenburg - Audio Editing Software

TRANSOM.org
a showcase & workshop for new public radio
http://www.transom.org
October 25, 2010

* NEW TOOL: HINDENBURG - Audio Editing Software *

Transom is always interested in tools that make radio storytelling easier,
better, and cheaper. Lately, our Tools Editor Jeff Towne has been testing
some alternatives to ProTools and just test-drove Hindenburg from the
Danish Company, Nsaka, and finds it has the advantage of being designed
specifically for "us". Jeff says, "It's built by radio people for making
radio stories, podcasts and other documentary-style productions, rather
than multi-track music projects. The developers seem intent on keeping the
program simple and stable, easy to learn and use, even by non-technical
people."

And they have a free version. For both Mac and PC. Check it.
http://transom.org/?p=12909

Drop over any time,

Jay Allison
Atlantic Public Media
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
www.transom.org

=========================

"While we at Transom are not quite ready to abandon Pro Tools for all our
audio productions, Hindenburg is more than sufficient for many of them, and
provides a less-expensive, less-daunting entry point for reporters and
producers who wish to concentrate more on telling the story, and less on
the technique of digital editing."

-Jeff Towne, continued at Transom.org

How is this relevant, in any way, to radio?

[creative-radio] Bario Community Radio - Borneo

RT @creative_radio: Bario Community Radio - Borneo http://ow.ly/2YiwK Enrichment & preservation of the local indigenous cultures

http://www.ebario.org/bario-radio.html

In July 2009, e-Bario Sdn Bhd was awarded a grant by the Indigenous Peoples Assistance Facility of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to set up a community radio station. Community radio is a form of low-power small-scale FM broadcasting that is run by and for the community it serves. The function of Bario Radio is to extend the information services of the e-Bario telecentre into the homes of the residents of the surrounding area.

It is expected that this innovation will result in:
- Enrichment and preservation of the local indigenous cultures; particularly languages, music, history, song and verse.
- Reductions in poverty as greater levels of information are diffused throughout the isolated indigenous communities relating to economic, educational and health-related activities.
- A more cohesive community; through the airing and discussion of social problems, for example relating to health, agriculture, economic activities or coping with emergencies.
- A better connected population; through the rapid and widespread communication of important messages.
- More socially inclusive Peoples; by reaching everyone in their homes, radio brings benefits to all demographic groups; women, parents, students, the elderly, small children, the unemployed.
- A more democratic organization; community radio facilitates discussion of local issues by local people and it provides a forum for debate between them and their elected representatives.
- More culturally robust Peoples. Community radio is an effective platform for promoting entertainments and the arts.

[creative-radio] CMFE news update: Hungarian free radios contribution in disaster aftermath

---Apologies for cross-posting---

www.cmfe.eu news update - 20 October 2010

Hungarian free radios contribution in disaster aftermath
by Gabriella Velics

Following the red sludge tragedy in Western Hungary, temporary community
radios started to broadcast news in the affected areas of Kolontar and
Devecser. Soon after the tragedy, which ruined the lives of thousands,
some Hungarian free radio leaders along with volunteers decided to
establish local emergency radio stations to broadcast news in the
affected area and provide the residents and aid workers with
information, interviews, and music. At the moment, more than 10
Hungarian community radios are working together, some people are at the
site, while others are helping them from a distance in different parts
of the country.

One of the studios is operating in the nearby city of Ajka. The Best
Radio's team-members are under 18 secondary shcool volunteers, but
volunteers from different Hungarian community radios are also there to
help their heroic work. The programme can be received in the area
exposed to the red sludge and at the web site of Best Radio Ajka.

The other studio is temporary and is situated in the affected area of
Devecser, where they were given a room in the parish building and built
a studio. Their team consists of volunteers from different Hungarian
free radios. Besides their daily "home- job- family" routines, they all
come to the studio and spend their spare time doing this voluntary work.

These free radio broadcasting setvices are called KHH (Közös Hullámhossz
Hírszolgálat) and can be received everywhere in the affected area as
well as on the Internet.

Both studios are expecting a permanent status from the authorities.
