Overview
Farm Radio International is seeking an individual with an expertise in journalistic writing and editing and a passion for food security and rural development in Africa for the position of Farm Radio Weekly Editor. Farm Radio Weekly is an electronic publication serving African radio broadcasters, and others who share an interest in radio and small-scale agriculture in Africa. Farm Radio Weekly features news stories for and about African small-scale farmers, written in a format that is suitable for on-air use. The publication also offers other resources to radio organizations in support of their work in the area of food security, including information about training opportunities, workshops, funding sources, etc.
Responsibilities
Over the course of the 12-month contract, the Farm Radio Weekly Editor will be primarily responsible for the content of approximately 44 editions of Farm Radio Weekly.
Weekly duties will include the following:
Scan African news sources for stories of particular relevance to small-scale farmers.
Conduct further research on news stories of interest and re-package these news stories in a format suitable for on-air use (minimum of two news stories per week).
Work with freelance African journalists: assigning stories and evaluating story pitches; providing guidance on particular stories and coaching on Farm Radio International's
style; revising and editing content.
Prepare "Notes to Broadcasters" which provide additional information, story ideas, and resources on topics in the news.
Research other resources and opportunities for broadcasters (such as competitions, training, and online guides) and package them in a manner suitable for Farm Radio Weekly.
Work in collaboration with Research and Production Officer and Managing Editor to copy edit and finalize all content.
Occasional duties will include the following:
Translate stories by French-speaking journalists into English. Electronically publish Farm Radio Weekly.
Conduct an annual subscriber survey, and communicate with subscribers on an ad hoc basis, to gauge ongoing interest in various topics and resources.
Prepare and edit content for Farm Radio International's partner newsletter, Voices.
Other ongoing responsibilities include:
1. Contribute to the long-term strategy to move Farm Radio Weekly operations to Africa, and assist with steps in this transition.
2. Maintain a style guide for Farm Radio Weekly, in conjunction with the overall Farm Radio International style guide.
Qualifications
Education
A university degree, preferably at the Masters level, with specialization in journalism, international development, or agriculture and food security.
Skills and Experience
Exceptional writing and editing skills
At least 2 years' experience working in a news, radio, or other media organization, including 1 year of direct involvement in writing news stories or radio pieces.
Knowledge of rural development issues and challenges in Africa, particularly those related to agriculture and/or natural resource management
Knowledge of gender and development issues, and capacity to develop news stories that are gender sensitive and promote women's equality.
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
Oral and written fluency in English; ability to speak, understand, and read French
Experience preparing grant proposals would be highly valued
Experience with basic HTML coding is an asset

Farm Radio International is a Canadian-based, not-for-profit organization working in direct partnership with approximately 330 radio broadcasters in 39 African countries to fight poverty and food insecurity.
