Covering swine flu
April 28, 2009 - Posted by Regan Ray
Though the deaths in the latest international health crisis are so far
confined to Mexico, assignment desks across Canada have been waiting for
the Next Big One - are they ready? Covering Health Crises is a portal for
reporters to exchange questions and advice, starting with resources and
links to help make sense of the potential pandemic and learn from the
experience of SARS.

Spreading the news: observations and advice on reporting on swine flu
April 28, 2009 - Posted by Candace Gibson
This is the first real test of the both the media and many of the pandemic
plans put into place by hospitals, public health agencies and local,
provincial and federal levels of government since the SARS epidemic played
out in Toronto in 2003. From my vantage point as an interested scientist
and science journalist, both sides seem to be doing a much better job of
communication and a more balanced job of reporting on the potential risks
this time around...

A 2003 American Journalism Review article about coverage of SARS digs into
the debates that raged at that time. The issues remain relevant today as
coverage of the swine flu continues. From the AJR:

"Caution is the watchword for journalists involved in frontline reporting

discouraging in-person interviews and implementing other health

TV, health and the fear factor
April 28, 2009 - Posted by Ivor Shapiro
Back in 2003, John Doyle, The Globe and Mail's TV columnist, pointed out
that both officials and the press underestimated TV's power to foster fear
rather than provide perspective. And it's not just photos of people in
masks that do it:

"Scenes of officials sitting at a table and talking in vague terms are
precisely what works on TV to generate fear.... For television to be used
to calm fears and present an image of a situation under control, the
clichés of medical shows must be harnessed -- an empathetic authority
figure who is in charge of the SARS crisis should have been put front and
centre on TV to speak in terms that mean something to everybody. Instead,
for weeks, a gaggle of people with vague titles talked about 'probable and
suspected cases' and merely made the world scared of SARS in general and
Toronto in particular." ("SARS coverage fuels fear instead of calming it,
" The Globe & Mail, April 28, 2003.)

Words worth remembering as swine-flu fever builds.

Hello,
A Graduate Student from the Media, Art and Text program at Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA is focusing her research on the
re-examination of radio in the digital age with a specific focus on
nonprofit local radio asked me to pass this survey on. There are only 4
questions in the survey. If you have a minute please fill it out. Here at
Prometheus we are a hub of information about LPFM stations but there is
still so much we don't know and dont have time to find out. Therefore, it's
great when there are academics who do have time and are interested in
researching community radio, it's impact etc.
Thanks,
Andalusia

This LPFM, College & Community Radio Survey is intended for active
participants in local radio and is part of my graduate research in the
Media, Art and Text program at Virginia Commonwealth University. This will
be the first step in a plan to study nonprofit local radio over the next two
years with the goal of promoting greater support for, and participation in
grassroots non-commercial community radio broadcasting in America.

"Radio is one sided when it should be two. It is purely an apparatus for
distribution, for mere sharing out. So here is a positive suggestion:
change this apparatus over from distribution to communication. The radio
would be the finest possible communication apparatus in public life, a vast
network of pipes. That is to say, it would be if it knew how to receive as
well as transmit, how to let the listener speak as well as hear, how to
bring someone into a relationship instead of isolating them." Bertolt

Hi George -- Barry and I were down here in 2000-2002 -- he was station
manager -- could you pass on the word? It's a great station ...

Subject: Appalshop Seeks General Manager for WMMT-FM
To: fenner@community-media.com

Dear Friend,

As you may be aware, Appalshop is seeking a General Manager for
WMMT-FM. The organization is looking to friends and colleagues like
you to assist us in circulating the job announcement to potential
candidates. A complete job description can be found at
http://ent.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=275198048&u=2987513

WMMT's General Manager will lead the station in planning and overall
direction -- preparing the annual plan and budget, supervising staff
and tracking budget. S/he will be the keeper and advocate of WMMT's
vision -- understanding both the guts and the soul of WMMT;
articulating and advocating the station's mission locally and
nationally; representing WMMT in state, regional, national discussions
(especially media policy and fundraising); and leading WMMT's
strategic planning and major policy decisions.

Appalshop is dedicated to the proposition that the world is
immeasurably enriched when local cultures garner the resources,
including new technologies, to tell their own stories and to listen to
the unique stories of others. The creative acts of listening and
telling are Appalshop's core competency.

Again, we encourage you to pass this announcement on to those you know
who may be interested in applying for the position of WMMT's General
Manager. Additional information is available at our website

El Salvador's Journalists Urge New Government to Democratize Communication

Several organizations and communication networks in El Salvador have
united as the "Movement for Democratic Communication" and called on the
incoming government, which takes power June 1, to reform policies on
information and communication in a way that supports the democratic
process.

According to the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters
(AMARC), the Movement is demanding the passage of an access to information
law and other reforms.

The group presented a nine-point, public manifesto, "Freedom of Expression
for a Country,", which calls for government advertising to be distributed
among media in an equitable way, "that guarantees it doesn't serve to
reward or punish media."

The proposals include reforming the Telecommunications Law in a way that
ensures fairness in granting radio and TV licenses in the public, private,
and community sectors.

VOTE IN THE COMMUNITY RADIO POLL:

Communities in Africa interact with their local community radio stations...

*Sufficiently: communities influence programming content in a meaningful way.

*Infrequently: communities don't generally engage with their local
community radio stations.

*Not at all: community radio stations struggle to feature the voices of
their specific communities.

*With difficulty: communities try to engage with their community radio
stations, but the stations won't hear them or feature their voices,
struggles, and opinions.
