Listen to an ambient composition mixing electronics and live piano samples, a
sonic collaboration between Jordan Christoff via Delay Talk and musician
activist Stefan Christoff. This composition built on live piano improvisations,
developed over months of experimentation via electronics by Jordan Christoff in
spring 2011 at the Torn Curtain performance/rehearsal space in Montreal. As
brothers Jordan and Stefan Christoff are regularly working at bridging organic
piano and contemporary electronics experimentation in sound, working toward
creating beautiful and inspiring sonic landscapes for your ears.

Re: [creative-radio] Qualcomm partners Sesame Workshop India for radio project

Dear all, Hi George,

You write:

"Under the pilot initiative, 10 families have been given Android-based
handsets with a 'Galli Galli Sim Sim' application, using which the members
can access the educational content from Sesame," Sesame Workshop India
Trust Managing Trustee Sashwati Banerjee said

What about air time? Wouldn't the families have to pay for the minutes they use on the phone listening to the programme? Does the app make the use free?

While naturally a brilliant technical feature and opportunity, I always wonder for whom these possibilities are really real?

Best,

- birgitte

NEW DELHI: Mobile chip maker Qualcomm today said it has partnered with
Sesame Workshop India to provide educational experiences to children of
migrant populations in Gurgaon through the use of community radio and
mobile phones.

"Under the pilot initiative, 10 families have been given Android-based
handsets with a 'Galli Galli Sim Sim' application, using which the members
can access the educational content from Sesame," Sesame Workshop India
Trust Managing Trustee Sashwati Banerjee said.

Also, there would be a broadcast on community radio 'Gurgaon ki Awaaz',
which can be accessed by these families through their handsets itself, she
added.

Started in the 1960s, Sesame Street is an American children's television
series, which uses Muppets, animation, short films, and cultural
references to deliver educational content. The concept is now available in
over 140 countries and is available as 'Galli Galli Sim Sim' in India.

Media and Information Literacy
by Martin Scott
This January 2009 guide was produced in response to broadcasting
organisations wanting guidelines to help them promote user-generated content
(UGC) and media and information literacy (MIL). It includes outlining a
typology of UGC, a discussion of who contributes UGC, and guidance on
promoting MIL and UGC in formal and non-formal education and in communities.
It was supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Commonwealth Broadcasting
Association (CBA).

[creative-radio] Radio: Connecting Papua

Radio: Connecting Papua
by Eriyanto and Esti Wahyuni
This December 2009 report is the result of an independent survey
commissioned by Media Development Loan Fund (MDLF) to look at the impact of
a radio station that MDLF helped to build in the Central Highlands of Papua
in cooperation with Indonesian radio news agency KBR68H and the non profit
Indonesian Association for Media Development (PPMN). "The research
reveals...[that] in Kurima, Radio Pikon Ane is not just a medium of
information and entertainment; it is also a community mobiliser....The most
obvious impact of Radio Pikon Ane is that it offers access to and a media
for information, never before available in such a geographically isolated
area with such poor communication infrastructure...."

Honour for Sangham Radio Staff Reporter

The community radio experiment -Sangham Radio-, run by a group of
illiterate rural dalit women at Machnoor village, Medak district continues
to attract attention and accolades. The School of Journalism and
Communication of University of Queensland, Australia has commended the dalit
women for their 'innovative and practical mode of communication contributing
to grass-roots levels sustainable development'.

The commendation is part of a global competition '2011 Communication for
Social Change Award', which was conducted by University of Queensland. Close
to 60 competitors drawn from 22 countries vied for the top honours. The
community radio, which was set up by Deccan Development Society (DDS), is
being exclusively run by dalit women from rural background. Commending the
work by rural women, The Centre for Communication and Social Change, School
of Journalism and Communication, University of Queensland has sent a letter.
"We commend the courage and extraordinary commitment you have demonstrated
to communication for social change. The Centre commends your contribution to
innovative and practical communication that has contributed to
grassroots-level sustainable development," the letter said.

"The poor and marginalised, especially rural dalit women, are excluded by
traditional media. The issues that impact their lives are hardly covered by
anyone. The Sangham radio is an attempt to give such women a voice and a
platform to share views," says Director of DDS, P.V. Sateesh said.

Supported by DDS, about 18 women have been creating content for the
community radio on a wide range of issues. The community radio is billed as
the first such initiative in India that is run and managed fully by rural
dalit women. The women were provided training on the intricacies of
broadcasting and running a community radio by DDS.

"There are close to 5,000 women members of DDS and they contribute Rs. 5
every month to run the community radio. Issues like ecological agriculture,
local healing systems, violence against women, locally relevant education,
childcare and tradition and community care of natural resources are
discussed in the radio," Mr. Sateesh said.

[creative-radio] Girls making media in Ghana

Girls making media in Ghana

[excerpt]

Sometimes among all the ICT4D hype, we forget about one of the biggest and
oldest ICTs there is: radio. There are all kinds of jobs that the youth can
do at the radio station, including news, marketing, voice, or running the
cafe. Having job skills such as these can begin to give the youth some
experiences that will serve them later in life.

The GMM program began last year with a workshop for 20 of the students on
media skills and gender. Following that the Club received a small media kit
consisting of digital cameras, voice recorders, a radio, a notice board and
Flip cameras. The girls work with 2 advisers and now several boys have also
joined the Club. They conducted a bullying campaign with the goal of
reducing the incidence of bullying by 30%. After the campaign, which
included posters, educational sessions and other outreach, the Senior
Housemaster claimed that bullying had been reduced by 90% compared to the
year before.
