[creative-radio] Buy Nothing Day, 11/25/2009, 12:00 am

Reminder from:   creative-radio Yahoo! Group

Title:   Buy Nothing Day

Date:   Wednesday November 25, 2009
Time:   All Day
Repeats:   This event repeats every year.
Notes:   For 24 hours on Buy Nothing Day, November 25, we remember that no one was born to shop,
we pause, make a small choice to participate by not participating, and
we regain some calm. What will you do to tell Nike, McDonald's, Walmart
and the rest that enough is enough? Why not run with some ideas dreamt
up by the more than 3,500 jammers who took part in last year's biggest
ever Buy Nothing Day? Set up credit card cut ups, don white coats and
vaccinate against affluenza, give out free samples of nothing - anything
to show that the best things in life are free. You can find more ideas
and tools i

[creative-radio] Chiang Mai : Evidence sought to arrest radio host for threatening premier

Evidence sought to arrest radio host for threatening premier
Published: 23/11/2009 at 12:00 AM

[excerpt]

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/27940/evidence-sought-to-arrest-radio-host-for-threatening-premier

Police are gathering evidence against a local community radio host for
threatening the life of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on air.

Chiang Mai deputy governor Pairoj Saenphuwong said police could arrest
Phetcharawat Watanapongsirikul, a leader of the Love Chiang Mai 51 group,
who announced on his community radio programme that he would take the life
of Mr Abhisit when he visited the city next Sunday.

Mr Abhisit will be in Chiang Mai to meet the Thai Chamber of Commerce and
the Federation of Thai Industries.

"No one needs to file a complaint with police because it is a criminal
case. Police can make an arrest as soon as the court issues an arrest
warrant," Mr Pairoj said.

The group supports former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra whose native
province is Chiang Mai.

Protesters would be allowed to rally on a ground at the Tha Phae gate when
the prime minister arrives, he said. Any protesters who demonstrate
elsewhere in an unlawful manner would face legal action.

[creative-radio] Citizen-Journalism site starts program for displaced pro journalists

A Web site for citizen journalists is extending a helping hand to
professional ones. Allvoices.com has announced a program for displaced
journalists who want to continue their craft and get paid for it. The San
Francisco-based Web site is building a professional network of journalists
to cover key beats. Allvoices will pay up to USD 250 per story to
journalists who are selected to participate in the "Provoices" program
based on market and beat. If the story generates a lot of traffic, the
writer could be eligible for more money. During the first nine months of
this year, newspaper industry employment was down 22 percent compared to
the same period last year, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Allvoices has more than 200,000 registered citizen contributors. Those
interested in Provoices should send a resume and clips to
journalist@allvoices.com

Highlights from this issue

of the pan-African coalition, Solidarity for African Women's Rights

came into force four years ago, on 25 November.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS: LOOKING BACK OR MOVING FORWARD?
The Beijing Platform for Action in Africa
Mary Wandia
Despite the wide adoption of protocols for gender equality across
Africa, 'violations of women's human rights have reached epidemic
proportions,' Mary Wandia writes in Pambazuka News, 'and unless we
adopt a multi-sectoral approach in the implementation and monitoring
of regional and international commitments, we shall continue to
marginalise half of the continent's population.' With the Beijing +15
Africa Review meeting underway in Banjul, Wandia asks whether Africa's
ministers for gender and women will 'rise up to the challenge'.

SPOTLIGHT ON BEIJING +15
Marren Akatsa-Bukachi
Addressing gender inequality remains central to the drive to improve
livelihoods and engender development for all, writes Marren
Akatsa-Bukachi. While progress has been made, the key challenge will
be to revitalise the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action
(BPFA) and ensure genuine momentum is sustained around achieving
gender equality in all areas of life, the author argues.
http://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/features/60349
******

WHY WE SHOULDN'T NEED BEIJING +15
Morissanda Kouyaté
'The idea behind "Beijing" was not to get together every five years
and count the victims of gender discrimination and violence',
Morissanda Kouyaté writes in Pambazuka News. 'It was intended to be –
and remains – a campaign to end these problems. A lack of will remains
a key obstacle to achieving this – not just political will, but at all
levels, to consider women as equal members of society, enjoying all
inalienable rights accorded to men.'

******

THE BEIJING PLATFORM FOR ACTION: WHAT HAS IT DELIVERED TO AFRICAN WOMEN?
Norah Matovu Winyi
The Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) was unveiled some 15 years ago,
leading Norah Matovu Winyi to ask what has really changed for Africa's
women since the platform's inception. Over the last 15 years progress
in women's position has on the whole been regrettably slow the author
notes, with a wide gap between commitments and actual action still
persistent. But with the unveiling of a new resolution to 'establish
[a] new gender-equality entity in the United Nations', there is fresh
hope that the international organisation will be able to work with
governments and Africa's citizens to revitalise the drive for
equality, peace and development.

KENYA: PEACE AND SECURITY IMPERATIVES FOR WOMEN
Gender dimensions in the electoral process
Carole Ageng'o
Carole Ageng'o takes a closer look at the interplay between gender
relations and conflict in the three phases of Kenya's electoral
process – pre-election, election and post-election. Highlighting the
barriers women face to participating in each phase despite
international standards and regional instruments for protection of the
rights of women, Ageng'o argues that entrenched social roles have
'made it difficult for men and women to share power, privilege and
status on the basis of equality'. A change in prevailing gender
relations, Ageng'o suggests, is key to 'empowering communities torn
apart by war to build peace from below'.

[creative-radio] Even the Taliban Supports Local Radio

David Hoffman's InterNews, a $35 million organization which has helped
support the development of 4,800 news outlets in 30 countries, has just
opened its 42nd radio station in Afghanistan, and over lunch, Hoffman had
an interesting story to tell. It was about the response from the Taliban
to this form of public diplomacy.

Shortly after the station started reporting local news, says Hoffman, it
received a phone call from a very polite member of the Taliban. "Could you
please take the little jingle off the air?" the caller asked. "I want to
listen to the news, but it starts with a jingle, and we're not allowed to
listen to music." The Taliban could burn us down, says Hoffman, but they
don't, because we provide an important function in Afghanistan.
