Native Arts Association Strives for Satellite Radio
Indianapolis, IN December 22, 2009. The Woodlands Tribal Artists
Association Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote a
renaissance in eastern woodland Indian art and crafts. This is strived for
by means of arts education, trade show and public exhibition
opportunities, and archival support services. A major tool that the
association hopes to use in fulfilling its mission is to deploy and
maintain a Native-interest satellite radio station.
Association Chairman Duane Prescott (Ho Chunk) noted: "We believe that
there is a large number of artists, traders, dancers, singers, and
non-native enthusiasts traveling across the country at any time who would
be very interested in Native American programming if it was an option
available to them. We hope to convince Sirius XM that a station with
cultural, educational, and current event programming would bring them a
healthy number of subscribers and listeners."
Board Member Jim Beuoy added: "Our immediate challenge is to gather
sufficient statistics for our continued meetings with Sirius XM.
Obviously, they cannot give a channel to everyone who requests one. We
need to present the programming decision makers with facts about potential
subscription growth that would result from this valuable and underserved
programming. Consequently, we people interested in hearing Native music,
interviews, and news to complete our on-line survey. It's free to the
respondent and set up in a way that only one response can come from each
computer address. " That site is: http://www.surveymo
Board Member Ross Davis Ph.D. (Workforce Development Coordinator,
Northwoods NiiJii Enterprise Community Inc.) also noted: "Mass media is
unquestionably a powerful agent of socialization
underneath the surface in Indian country, anxious to arisea passion to
share storiesof culture, history, entertainment, humor, you name it--to
communicate across generations, whether elder, youth, or even the Seventh
generation. Satellite radio is a vehicle to carry forth such passion. We
know that this isn't going to be easy, but we have great advisors and
counsel and are starting to pique the interest of a number of key people
and groups in Indian country. We can get the ball rolling with the help of
everyone taking the opportunity to email the survey link to everyone they
know, so that we can grow this grassroots initiative exponentially. It
would be to our and everybody's advantage if everyone were able to
complete the survey soon. There's no question that the time has come for
Native satellite radio. Please fill out the survey while you're thinking
about it!"
