* NEW RADIO SPECIAL - Reality Radio: Telling True Stories in Sound *
A few months ago I emceed an evening of radio storytelling at WGBH in
Boston, sponsored by the Association of Independents in Radio. The evening
was based on the book "Reality Radio: Telling True Stories in Sound,"
edited by John Biewen and Alexa Dilworth, and featured riffs by Ira Glass,
The Kitchen Sisters, and me.
Ira told a hopeful story about what a bad radio producer he was, even after
seven years of doing it. Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson explained how they
befriend such a grand variety of strangers in telling their stories, and I
talked about documenting our community in 60-second bursts of sound over
the course of ten years. All our spiels were based on material we created
for Transom, which ended up in John and Alexa's book.
Viki Merrick at Atlantic Public Media (Transom's home) produced the
hour-long special and you can find it on the PRX. If you're a station, you
can air it or fundraise around it, since it's a celebration of what we do
in public radio.
Drop over any time,

Creative-Radio is an independent forum for people active in or interested in the use of radio in development, in particular promoting public health, improved education, protection of the environment, improved livelihoods, good governance and conflict mitigation. Since it started in 1996, Creative-Radio has been in the forefront of radio's resurgence as a tool for social change and peace-building, and it helps promote best practice in these areas.
