*Call for Submissions / New Adventures in Sound Art / Freedom / Toronto, ON
/ Deadline Date: Friday, September 30, 2011*

Go to www.naisa.ca/opportunities.html<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=atrppscab&et=1107793322850&s=139&e=001RhJeSwHit7xX8mk9Rj-R4MAuWb7YAYxeW66qQRfFYIywiRSglz83SuiXgAYT6zNFqKO8fFCl8d8_v7d8Obmpu4NuYORcAo4DtYOTPn2P8yDT44hfK1tifBOeKN5YAsO5>for
full information and on-line application

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and
nationalities to submit works on the theme FREEDOM for consideration in New
Adventures in Sound Art's 2012 programming in Toronto, Canada. Using the
theme of FREEDOM for its 2012 programming, NAISA will commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the birth of John Cage, an artist that challenged established
artistic conventions in many fields. He also helped to broaden the already
evolving language of sonic expression to include the existence of sound
within the realm of art.

Preference in programming will be given to works that respond in some way to
the theme of FREEDOM. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme
are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component.
NAISA would also like to encourage artists to submit works for live
performance, gallery exhibit, screening, webcast or audio stream, radio
broadcast, network or translocal performance, mobile experiences and any
other emerging formats that include sound as a primary element.

New Adventures in Sound Art is a non-profit organization that presents
performances and installations spanning the entire spectrum of sound art.
NAISA is partially funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the
Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts and
the SOCAN Foundation.

[creative-radio] Orissa-based community radio - Radio Namaskar made it to the voice of the flood hit population

http://www.orissadiary.com/ShowDistrictNews.asp?id=29223

*Report by OrissaDiary.com correspondent; Bhubaneswar:* Night of 10th Sept
was a black night for people of Gop Block in Puri district as the breach in
the embankment of Kusabhadra river at Kusupur made flood water gush into the
villages and even the Gop market that never saw a flood like this. Within a
few minutes thousands of the families living in different villages lost
their houses and belongings. Some died, many went missing. As the old mud
and kuchha houses collapsed, people took shelter on roof top of nearest
buildings where they had to spend 3 days.

Experiencing the gravity of the situation, Radio Namaskar – the community
radio of the locality soon started broadcasting information about the flood
and about people in the affected areas. It was of immense help to people as,
even, persons missing or stuck off in places could get information on the
radio about their families and villages.

As Radio Namaskar soon became the medium of communication in the flood
gripped localities, local administration also tapped it as an opportunity to
make announcements of updates and information.

Not keeping the activities limited to broadcast of information only, Radio
Namaskar also involved it in the rescue activities. A dedicated telephone
line was used by Radio Namaskar to link the affected communities with
administration and others through radio. Within a week, more than one
thousand phone calls were received from people. 32 relief teams and number
of individual volunteers coordinated and facilitated all the activities of
Radio Namaskar in the flood affected area for which, many people could save
their life.

Apart from becoming the voice of the flood hit population, Radio Namaskar
disseminated the way how Community Radios can play a crucial role in time of
disasters.

[creative-radio] JOB: Executive Producer and Trainer, Radio, Development Media International (DMI

Executive Producer and Trainer, Radio
Development Media International (DMI)
Location: Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Apply by: 09 Oct 2011
http://www.devnetjobs.org/jobdescription.aspx?job_id=1398

WANTED: FRENCH-SPEAKING RADIO EXECUTIVE PRODUCER TO HELP SAVE LIVES IN WEST AFRICA

Development Media International (DMI) is a London-based organisation which uses mass media campaigns to promote healthy behaviours in developing countries (www.developmentmedia.net). DMI has launched the world's first scientific trial to examine how many lives can be saved using mass media alone. This major, 4-year project will take place in Burkina Faso, West Africa, in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Our model predicts that we will prevent 20% of all child deaths. At the end of the project, the producer will know precisely how many lives they have saved.

The media outputs of the campaign will be based on 60-second radio spots (PSAs1) and 2 hour radio phone-in programmes, all to be produced in local languages and based on extensive research. Some 600+ spots and 200+ phone-in programmes will be produced over 30 months. We are now looking for an outstanding French-speaking radio executive to join the team in Burkina Faso in helping recruit, lead and train the locally-hired creative team.

[creative-radio] On the Air, from Mobile Phones to Community Radio

On the Air, from Mobile to Radio
Pilot project lets listeners
record and pay for on-air radio messages via mobile phone, creating a new
revenue source for community radio in Kenya Recently dubbed by
TIME Magazine as the "Silicon Savanna ( http://e2ma.net/go/7193623609/208663445/224572063/1406122/goto:http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2080702,00.html
)," Kenya is home to innovative mobile phone technologies that have
transformed the lives of millions of people. Ahead of much of the rest of
the world, Kenyans have adopted mobile money as an everyday way to handle
financial transactions. More than half the population use mobile phones
for everything from transferring money to family members to paying bills
— even cab fare. Now, community radio stations are
integrating mobile money into their business models. Through a four-month
pilot launched in August by Internews, in partnership with the mobile
banking system MobiKash and a network of community radio stations, the
stations will earn revenue while putting community voices on the air,
through an innovative "M-Dedications" system. Watch a video (

1. Radio in Africa
Published by Wits University Press in January 2011, Radio in Africa is a
collection of essays on the multiple roles of radio in the lives of
listeners in Anglophone, Lusophone, and Francophone Africa. According to the
publishers, radio has been called "Africa's medium." The book is divided
into three parts: Radio, Popular Democracy, and New Publics; The Cultures of
Radio: Languages of the Everyday; and Radio and Community: Voices of Change.
The essays cover a wide variety of perspectives, including the history of
radio and its part in the culture and politics of countries such as Angola
and South Africa. Others, such as an essay on gender and religion in Mali,
show how radio can both create tensions and encourage social innovation...

2. Africa's Evolving Infosystems: A Pathway to Security and Stability
Published by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in March 2011, this
report looks at how mobile telephony has evolved in Africa, and what it
means for development and democracy. The author suggests that new uses of
mobile communication, often paired with radio broadcasting, have created
entirely new types of institutions that promote transparency,
accountability, and security. For example, at Radio Tayna, radio club
members use mobile phones to call in programming suggestions. Radio and
mobile phones also provide communities tools that empower them to build
connections with external organisations that can help meet pressing safety,
health, and economic concerns...

3. (En)gendering Community and Popular Media Content: Lessons from the Field
This article, published in the Gender and Media Diversity Journal in April
2010, examines gender mainstreaming in popular and community media content,
particularly radio. The author looks at two approaches to incorporating
gender content into community radio: gender-specific programming and gender
mainstreaming. The paper argues that gender mainstreaming is crucial to
ensuring women's voices are heard, and profiles the approach of South
African-based organisation CMFD (Community Media for Development)
Productions. The author uses the organisation's work to outline a series of
'best practices' for gender mainstreaming in community and popular media
content, particularly radio drama...

4. The Media, Climate and Society - The African Story
This article from the Network of Climate Change Journalists of the Greater
Horn of Africa (NECJOGHA) outlines the media's role in communicating the
impact of climate change, arguing that most of the disasters affecting
Africa today are climate-related. Journalists interviewed identified radio
as the most commonly used medium for the dissemination of climate
information, arguing that it is a rapid and effective avenue of risk
management over a wide area especially in rural settings. They further
argued that while radio is cheap and people without access to electricity
can listen to their sets in the fields where they work, television reporting
on weather and climate change is often uninspiring and in need of radical
reform...

5. Hen Mpoano (Our Coast) - Ghana
This community awareness and engagement campaign was designed to support an
integrated approach to ecosystem governance and sustainable management of
coastal resources in Ghana's Western Region. One component of the campaign
is a regional 24-episode serial radio drama featuring a fictional fishing
village; it will run weekly for six months, launching September 2011. The
five-year project, running from 2010 to 2015, is a collaboration between the
United States Agency for International Development, the Coastal Resources
Center (CRC) of the University of Rhode Island, SustainaMetrix, Friends of
the Nation Ghana, the World Fish Center, and Media Impact...

6. Esquadrão da Prevenção (Prevention Squad) - Angola
Launched in 2010 by Population Services International (PSI) Angola,
Esquadrão da Prevenção (Prevention Squad) is a multimedia campaign that
features cartoon superheroes on television and radio, in print materials,
and in person, who protect children from malaria and water-borne illness.
The campaign is designed to raise awareness about malaria and water-borne
illness prevention among children by encouraging parents to more
consistently follow healthy practices with their children, such as using bed
nets, treating water, and washing hands with soap...

7. Get Off the Sexual Network! Campaign - Uganda
Launched in Uganda in September 2009, Get Off the Sexual Network! was a
multimedia HIV prevention campaign designed to raise awareness about the
risks associated with multiple and concurrent partnerships (MCP) using
radio, television, and print media, and community-based interpersonal
communication. Radio skits tackled issues of fidelity (related to sexual
networks) in a humourous, entertaining, and educative way. At the end of
each skit, there was a call-in session where listeners were able to
participate, interact, and relate to the situations. Drama teams also acted
out these skits in communities, to prompt discussions...

8. Tsireledzani ("Let's Protect Each Other") - South Africa
Launched in February 2009, the Tsirelezdani project works to develop, test,
and disseminate a series of pilot products, activities, and tools designed
to raise awareness of human trafficking in South Africa. Specific
communication tools used in the campaign include: a radio drama series based
on the adaptation of trafficking stories; the production of artwork, poems,
and "industrial theatre" representations on and about human trafficking;
production and distribution of posters, flyers, stickers, and leaflets; and
the launch of a South African government website on human trafficking...
