Internews to Present "Every Human Has Rights" Media Awards with Archbishop
Desmond Tutu

Awards Celebrating 60th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human
Rights Honor Media Reports on Forced Labor at Nike Factory,"Virtual
Imprisonment" at Gitmo

Internews has announced the thirty winners of its global "Every Human Has
Rights" Media Awards, honoring journalists who have reported on human
rights abuses from Guantanamo Bay to Darfur refugee camps. The winners are
being flown to Paris to receive their awards on December 6 at the Every
Human Has Rights celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former Irish
President Mary Robinson will speak at the event.

The media competition attracted entries from more than 400 journalists,
with radio, TV, print and online stories focusing on 108 countries.
Winning stories spotlight forced labor at a Nike factory in Malaysia,
"virtual imprisonment" at a Guantanamo Bay simulation on Second Life,
tunnel smuggling between Gaza and Egypt, and threats to female refugees
from Darfur, among others.

"As a member of the international jury for the Internews Every Human Has
Rights Media Awards, it was very inspiring to see how courageous
journalists around the world are bringing human rights abuses to the light
of day," said journalist and author Mariane Pearl, who is the widow of
slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

The Internews media competition is part of the "Every Human Has Rights"
campaign, which has worked throughout this year to stimulate global and
local conversations about human rights.

The "Every Human Has Rights" campaign was inspired by The Elders
(http://www.theelders.org), a group of globally respected leaders convened
by Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel. The founding members include
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson, former UN Secretary-General Kofi
Annan, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and five others.

Among the thirty winners of the Internews Every Human Has Rights Media
Awards, seven will receive special prizes, to be announced in Paris. These
will include an award for the best piece as determined by an online public
vote, promoted through Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Care2 and other social
networks. Winning entries and the public vote are online at Every Human
Has Rights Media Awards. http://media-awards.everyhumanhasrights.org/

Internews is an international media development organization that empowers
local media worldwide to serve the information needs of their communities.
The organization has worked in over 70 countries and trained over 70,000
people in media skills.
