Voice over IP

[excerpt]

When we needed a personal touch, Voice over IP (also called VoIP, IP
Telephony, and Internet telephony) came in handy and kept costs down. VoIP
technology enables the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or
any other IP network. With VoIP, eRiders could chat online with each other
or with managers without incurring the expensive long-distance charges of
regular phone calls. VoIP allows users to place calls to traditional
landline phones, as well as to those with a VoIP account, a computer, and a
microphone headset.

eRiders typically use the VoIP service
Skype<http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/downloads/internet/page10380.cfm>
, but there are other services available. To learn about other VoIP tools,
or about VoIP technology in general, read TechSoup's article Ditch Your
Telephone for VoIP<http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4776.cfm>
.

Ditch Your Telephone for VoIP Make free, or nearly free, phone calls over
the Internethttp://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page4776.cfm

[excerpt]

Although in recent years the cost of long-distance phone calls has decreased
in many parts of the world, phone rates are often still prohibitively
expensive for nonprofits, especially those working internationally.
Communicating online is an alternative, yet can lack the efficiency -- and
effectiveness -- of a phone call. A possible compromise? Voice over Internet
Protocol ( VoIP or Voice over IP), a technology that enables you to make
calls over the Internet for significantly less than the cost of a
traditional phone call, or even for free.

Organizations most likely to benefit from VoIPs are those that need to make
lots of long-distance phone calls, particularly abroad. This includes
organizations that work internationally, but could also apply to those with
staff in other parts of the country or abroad. Small nonprofits and NGOs
that already have computers and an Internet connection, or whose staff work
remotely because there is no office, could also benefit, even if they are
just making local calls.

Depending on the service they choose, most organizations already have much
(if not all) of what they need to make use of VoIP technology. Any
additional required software is often free or inexpensive. However, there
may be extra costs for hardware and services, meaning that Internet phone
calls aren't cost effective for everyone. See below for more information.

Community Radio Training Workshop
Organised by Community Radio Forum
at Dahanu, Maharashtra
July 1 - 4 2009

Community Radio Forum-India is a registered association of community radio
broadcasters, researches and advocates in India and its members have played
a significant role in shaping and drafting the new CR policy currently in
place. CRF believes in the power of community radio, is committed to
democratization of India's airwaves and works to enable community
organizations to set up their own Community Radio Station. The CRF, being a
membership based organization, is the only representative body of CR
practitioners in India

CRF is organising a 4 day workshop in July 2009 (1 - 4 ) targeted primarily
at communities and groups who have already applied for a CR license and are
in the preparatory phase of setting up a CRS. However, groups considering
setting up a CRS are also welcome.

Aims and Objectives of workshop

1. To demystify technological aspects of CRS
2. To understand the various aspects of content and programming required to
run a CRS
3. To provide hands on training on content development and programming for a
CRS

Critical to the sustainability of community radio is affordable technology.
The 4-day Workshop will discuss various options for studio as well as
transmission equipment, aiming to provide a clear understanding and
demonstration of the equipment required to set up and run a radio station.
Besides transmission, both hardware as well as software options for radio
programming and sound architecture will be displayed and discussed.

Additionally, participants will spend time producing short duration
programmes that they will edit, record and play back. Field recording
exercises with recorders will enable participants to gain a sense of the
challenges they face in building content for the CRS.
