The Denmark-based media organisation Games (Gambia Media Support) calls on
the EU politicians and diplomats and European tourist companies to take
action against the court verdict which resulted in the conviction of six
Gambian independent journalists.
On Thursday morning, 6 August 6, in a courtroom in Banjul, the capital of
Gambia, soldiers held AK 47 rifles while a handpicked Nigerian High Court
judge found the six journalists guilty of of sedition and defamation and
sentenced them to two years imprisonment and fined them US$ 10,000 each.
According to the Gambian Press Union (GPU) and international freedom of
expression organisations, including Amnesty International, the
International Federation of Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, The
Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Trade Union
Confederation, the six were merely exercising their freedom of expression.
