South Asia has spoken

We have only a few days for the much anticipated Climate Change conference in Copenhagen to begin and world leaders have still made up their minds to seal a climate deal that could make save the earth. While skepticism runs deeply across the world including South Asia, people still are lingering to the thin thread of hope. Panos Radio South Asia brings to you this special edition of Development Dilemma to share voices of the ordinary South Asians and experts from the Himalayas to the Coastlines of South Asia.

Subject: a long life lived so well ... George Atkins founder of Farm Radio
Int'l passed away today

***************

It is with sadness that we share the news that George Atkins died this
morning.

Legions of people were touched by George's life - George always inspired
with his vision, passion, energy and commitment to serving smallholder
farmers (and agriculture, the basic industry) through radio.

Farm Radio International produced a short film this past summer in which
George tells the founding story of Developing Countries Farm Radio Network.
If you haven't seen it yet, or wish to see it again, you may view it here:

More news and messages of condolence to his family and colleagues will be
made available on the website of Farm Radio International

[creative-radio] Radio Fellowships & Grants Directory

Updated November 24, 2009

http://www.airmedia.org/ops/airFellowShip.php?PageID=149&sIndex=All

Guidelines and Instructions

1. By far the most important thing to note about this list is that it
refers to ONLY radio-related FELLOWSHIPS and GRANTS.

2. By its very nature, it is often hard to determine where to draw the
line as to what to include in the list and what to exclude. If the
agency in question specifically states that they give a
fellowship/grant either generally to 'broadcast media' or specifically
to radio projects, we have included it. If the agency contacted stated
it does not give fellowships/grants to radio producers, the entry was
not included in this list.

3. For the most part, these are domestic U. S. fellowships and grants,
although we have included some key foreign ones as well. Also, because
the territory we cover is so vast, there are many local or regional
fellowships and grants we haven't included. If you know of others,
please tell us.

4. The dates for "Deadline" should be used in a general sense. To
confirm the official deadlines and complete rules for any of the
fellowships/grants listed, you MUST contact the agency itself. Because
there are so many agencies with different application and fellowship
calendars, these dates sometimes refer to the current official
deadline, but they might refer to last year's deadline. This list
should be used for general planning purposes only! OFFICIAL DATES MUST
BE CONFIRMED WITH THE AGENCY ITSELF!

5. This is a work-in-progress. We have tried to be as inclusive and
accurate as possible, but with this much data, changes occur all the
time. Please use our Fellowships Directory Update Form to send errors,
corrections, omissions and suggestions. Also, the vast majority of
these fellowships and grants are honorable and respectable, but if any
of the agencies seem to be a bit shady or disreputable, let us know of
your experiences with them.

6. If you win a fellowship or grant -- from this list or elsewhere --
please let us know: airspace@airmedia.org.

You will find an archive that includes articles on both the art and

[creative-radio] Preston FM's World AIDS Day

Preston FM supports World AIDS Day with special day of programmes

Preston's Community Radio Station, Preston FM, is suspending our usual broadcast schedule to bring Preston and beyond 14 hours of programmes dedicated to World AIDS Day this Tuesday 1st December 2009 from 8am, helping you learn more about how HIV/AIDS affects people here in the UK and around the world.

You can listen in Preston, UK and the surrounding area on 103.2 FM, and around the world online at www.preston.fm <http://www.preston.fm> (click the "listen live" link). And if you miss any of the programmes, we'll be podcasting as many of them as possible on our website.

The day will include a special edition of our Chat City Breakfast Show, as well as discussions, debates, documentaries and even dramas. Some programmes will be borrowed from other community radio stations around the world - but most are being made by Preston FM volunteers.

The theme for the day will be reflected in everything - the interviews, the features, the vox pops, the music, the content from around the world. Preston FM's music team have scoured the archives to find appropriate and relevant music for the day.

Our World AIDS Day coverage is part of Preston FM's "Preston & Beyond" project, funded by DFID's Development Awareness Fund, which is helping local people gain a better understanding of the UN Millennium Development Goals and other International Development topics.

Preston FM's World AIDS Day Broadcast Schedule (all times GMT):

8am-10am - Chat City Live World AIDS Day Special - Presented by Mac McCarthy and Margaret Walton
Chat City kicks off Preston FM's World AIDS Day schedule with a live edition of the show featuring three interviews about living with HIV and the World AIDS Day Vigil in Preston, on the 4th December, information about World AIDS Day events in the area and a guide to HIV organisations and services.

11-12noon - Red Ribbon Magazine Programme - Presented by Preston FM and other organisations
A collection of packages, interviews and vox pops from Preston FM's very own Community Reporters and from other organisations and charities far and wide, sharing the common goal to create more awareness of HIV and AIDS.

Community radio in Sanand to have rural women at the helm

Sanand, the pastoral village pushed into prominence by the Nano project of
the Tatas, will soon have a community radio station (CRS) run by village
women, some of them barely literate.

These women have been selected from 20 neighbouring villages (one from
each) and are currently being trained for the CRS, which is sponsored by
the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA). They will soon build an
archival and topical database to run the station, and to that end have
been collating data and taking down laborious notes and interviewing
experts in developmental issues like agriculture, health and water
conservation.

"We have selected some married and unmarried women; some in their 40s,
while some very young. We aim to train a team that will be
self-sustainable and would be potential opinion leaders of their
community," said Shantaben Koshti, the coordinator of SEWA Academy.
