1. Online Survey Report: Radio for Peace Building Workshops
This survey from United Kingdom (UK)-based consulting company Radio for
Peace Building Ltd. was created as a way of finding out more about the kind
of radio for peace building workshops that radio professionals around the
world say they want. The survey results showed that the majority of
respondents are interested in "workshops on radio journalism for peace
building, and on talk shows for peace building, rather than in soap operas
or youth programmes. However, a high percentage (30.5%) is also interested
in a more generalised workshop approach, that of radio for conflict
prevention / management"...

2. AudienceScapes - Global
Launched by the Washington, DC (United States)-based InterMedia in March
2010, AudienceScapes is an online tool and research programme providing
media use and communication information on developing countries from a
bottom-up perspective. Based on the conviction that successful communication
is central to successful development, AudienceScapes is an effort to make
InterMedia's knowledge and experience in the field available to those who
conceive, design, implement, and evaluate development programmes, as well as
to other stakeholders in the development process...

3. Engaging Media in Local Governance Processes: The Case of Radio Sibuka,
Shinyanga Press Club, and Kagera Press Club
This 4-page case study shares information about the experience of
implementing a project entitled Capacity Building of Local Governance Actors
(CBLGA) in Tanzania, supported by the Netherlands Development Organisation
(SNV), in which the media was acknowledged as a local governance actor.
According to the report, the mass media form an important channel for
communication and delivery of information between authorities and the public
and contribute to a more transparent and accountable society...

6. Fostering Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Well-being with

This 60-page evaluation report examines a project carried out by Uganda's
Straight Talk Foundation (STF) called "Youth Radio for Better Adolescent
Reproductive Health" in Kisoro, Uganda. The project incorporated a local
language youth radio show with complementary information, education, and
communication (IEC) materials and face-to-face activities - a package of
interventions meant to facilitate sustained and informed conversations
amongst adolescents and the adults in their lives about adolescent sexual
and reproductive health (ASRH)...

7. Kande Ni Bayra Community Radio Listeners' Clubs - Niger
Initiated in July 2009, this two-year project, organised by the
non-governmental organisation Volontaires pour l'Intégration Educative (VIE)
Kande Ni Bayra and Dimitra, works to increase access to information and
communication in order to build the capacities of rural women and improve
their living conditions and leadership opportunities. The project combines
radio broadcasts and face-to-face sessions by working with listeners' club
meetings at literacy centres. The project covers the broadcast areas of nine
community radio stations in two regions of Niger...

8. Dagu Addis Youth Programme - Ethopia
This 30-minute youth radio programme combines reality radio, listener group
discussions, personal narratives, and games to portray challenges young
Ethiopians face in practicing healthy behaviours in relation to HIV
prevention. The programme was launched in December 2008 by the National AIDS
Resource Centre and broadcasts on a radio station in Addis Ababa, as well as
via school-based media in 15 government-owned high schools. The show
explores topics such as sexuality, relationships, peer pressure, gender,
reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS from the perspective of adolescents and
young adults...

9. Majalisar Mata Manoma - Nigeria
Initiated in 2009, Majalisar Mata Manoma was a project that involved
creating spaces for women farmers in the rural community of Gwagwada,
Nigeria to meet and engage with radio. The project, which was carried out by
the African Radio Drama Association (ARDA), involved the development and
broadcast of a radio programme designed for rural farmers, particularly
women, as well as the establishment of a listening club in Gwagwada. Women
in the listening clubs were also trained to use a cellphone to interact with
the radio programme...

10. Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) - Zimbabwe
VMCZ is a professional media self-regulatory body set up in 2007 by
Zimbabwean journalists and other stakeholders in civil society who subscribe
to the principles of media freedom, accountability, independence, and
ethical journalism. VMCZ's mission is to promote a strong and ethical media
with the ability to contribute to building a more democratic and just
society within policy and legal environments that facilitate growth and
development of independent, pluralistic, and free media...

11. Reporting Redd: A Journalist's Guide to the Role of Forests in Combating
Global Climate Change
This media pack, published by Panos London, aims to give journalists an
overview of a vital issue in global climate change negotiations. REDD is an
acronym for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in
developing countries and is a proposed mechanism to slow the loss of
forests, but, according to this document, how it will work in practice is
proving "controversial and raising complex and emotive issues of national
sovereignty, human rights, big money, and corruption". "Reporting REDD"
examines the debates between the different organisations and individuals
involved with the project...

12. Media in Zimbabwe (MIZ) - Zimbabwe
Centring around an interactive web platform, this initiative was launched by
a senior Zimbabwean journalist seeking to circulate information that
Zimbabwean journalists may find handy in their work and to provide a
platform for networking and sharing ideas. The goal is to help create a
cadre of journalists who are: sensitive to human rights and democracy;
unwilling to discriminate on the basis of tribe, race, gender, religion,
sexual orientation, etc.; capable of reporting fairly and objectively,
without fear or favour; committed to ethics and professional standards in
journalism; and enlightened to news and opportunities beyond the eyes of the
ruling party. In short, Media in Zimbabwe (MIZ) seeks to highlight
strategies for fighting or evading media repression and media censorship,
such as by using the internet or blogging to communicate.
