[creative-radio] Canadian-designed portable FM radio station that fits in a briefcase

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/story/2010/12/29/portable-radio-africa.html#ixzz19bWcHXF7

A Kenyan Canadian has put together a portable FM radio station that fits in
a briefcase that he hopes to use to reach remote parts of Africa.

Peter Onguti helped develop and is bringing to Africa the 18-kilo FM radio
kit that can be powered by solar, battery or conventional electricity

He got the idea for a portable radio station after Kenya's last election,
when violence erupted across the country. People in rural areas especially
were experiencing an information blackout.

Onguti turned to a Canadian friend and business partner to design a portable
radio station with good range.

*'It's just that I want people to have access to information.'**—Kenyan
Canadian Peter Onguti*

"I asked him — he's a telecommunication engineer — if he could come up with
something which was suitable for this market, especially Kenya and the rest
of Africa," Onguti told CBC News.

Then he used his own savings to build and market the portable radio
stations.

The government of South Sudan will be using about a dozen of the units to
educate rural voters in the upcoming referendum on separation from North
Sudan.

And dozens more are being used to broadcast health and education programming
in Western Africa.

Depending on the unit, the stations can broadcast anywhere from 30 to 100
kilometres.

"You can do a lot with this unit, not necessarily just focus on war and
violence and such," Onguti says.

He envisions his portable radio stations in use all over Africa. Radio is a
good choice for Africa, where many people are illiterate and cannot afford
television.

He has yet to turn a profit on sales, with units ranging from $10,000 to
$70,000, but that doesn't discourage him.

"It's not about the money actually — it's just about information, that is
the key drive for me. It's just that I want people to have access to
information.

[creative-radio] PrisonAct) The VOICE Call - Urgent, ALARM! from our threatened activist - Mbolo Yufanyi fights against his arrest warrant + Video doku

PrisonAct) The VOICE Call - Urgent, ALARM! from our threatened activist -
Mbolo Yufanyi fights against his arrest warrant + Video doku

New developments and Update concerning the arrest warrant:
Please join to protest by writing and spreading the fax campaign and
support us to stop the continous intimidation of Mbolo without further
threat of imprisonment.

Dear friends and comrades, this is a message from our threatened activist
Mbolo Yufanyi.

"On the 14th of December, I was visited by the court Bailiff Johann Jöns
of the district court of Berlin Neukölln. He told me that the next visit
he will make to me will be with the Police and this time, it will be to
arrest me. He threatened me that this could also happen even on Christmas
Eve".

ALARM. Protest Rally and Vigil: When? Day X (day of my arrest).

Where? Where I will be brought to. The prison where I will be brought to,
be it in Berlin or elsewhere. You will be informed by us when that
happens.

„I stay by my words. I will not pay for my daughter being taken away from
me by Germany"

Mbolo Yufanyi.

>>END<<

Our Community is under threat - Mbolo Yufanyi needs your Solidarity!
The VOICE Refugee Forum in Germany:

As we all have been promptly informed by the above mail from Mbolo Yufanyi
and previous releases from The VOICE Refugee Forum, we should really
reckon that he now faces the prospect of being arrested at any time from
now on. We should therefore be prepared to stage a series of actions as
soon as they carry out their threat. Good that we have been warned so we
should be ready to act should anything happen to him. Others should see
how they can support our solidarity call and the demands of Mbolo Yufanyi.

We, activists of The VOICE Refugee Forum are in Solidarity with Mbolo
Yufanyi's demands to protest with him against every threat of his arrest
and imprisonment and we are against the racist decision by the district
court of Goettingen and the regional court of Braunschweig to separate him
from his daughter since 2007. The arrest and imprisonment of Mbolo is also
a threat to the harmonies in our international communities and families in
Germany and this has been and is still the goal of Mbolo's fight, to keep
these Communities together. Many of us have been separated from our
beloved ones and Mbolo Yufanyi is the first to carry out the disobedience
of a racist court decision, against the backdrop of facing jail terms.
This is a test for our different Communities.

What we stand to gain!
We will fight and campaign to open the German prison gates to free the
victims of racist imprisonments in Germany.

Mbolo will resist the arrest and we join his call to protest and fight for
his freedom if arrested, and also for the freedom of all victims of racist
imprisonment and against the racial profiling of the German authorities.
If they touch Mbolo, they touch us all.

We call on all activists, friends, progressive men and women and groups to
join us in our protest to denounce the ongoing threats of racist arrest
and imprisonment of one of our leading activists.

We are in consultation with his lawyer and we shall be keeping you abreast
with any new developments regarding this situation.

Please spread this information as wide as possible and ask your friends
and colleagues to join us and fight for Mbolo Yufanyi's right to freedom
and to be a father to his daughter whom he has not seen regularly for
years now. His daughter and present family need him.

Please join to protest by writing and spreading the fax campaign and
support us stop the continous intimitation of Mbolo without further threat
of imprisonment.

We protest the Racist elements of the court case and decisions of 2007
that took away the „Sorgerecht" as a father from Mbolo Yufanyi.

YUFANYI MBOLO'S STRUGGLES AGAINST REFUGEE RESIDENCE OBLIGATION
(Eng., Deutsch) Press release: Warrant of arrest and Imprisonment for
Cornelius Yufanyi.
http://thevoiceforum.org/node/314

Concerning the arrest warrant

New developments concerning the arrest warrant against a black father and
activist who wants to be a father for his daughter, but is not allowed to.

After several protests against the arrest of the black father and activist
took place, the arrest warrant, which was issued against him in 2007, was
transferred further to another bailiff. The court executor (JVHS a. GV)
Mr. Johann Jöns has summoned Mr. Yufanyi Movuh Mbolo for the 02/12/2010 in
order to enforce a statutory declaration, this time without giving his
official email address or fax number. The reason is probably to avoid
further electronic protests and fax campaigns. The court executor is in
possession of a warrant if Mr. Yufanyi Movuh does not appear on the above
date.

Mr. Yufanyi Movuh will not go to the appointment of the new court executor
and will continue to protest against the racist decisions of the District
Court of Göttingen and Braunschweig Higher Regional Court. The two courts
withdrew the right to custody of his daughter Anna Nulia Yufanyi Movuh
Nkume from him. The decision was based on a claim (also based on a racist
stereotype) of his White German ex-wife, Kerstin Gierth, who claims that
Mr. Yufanyi wanted to kidnap his daughter and take her with him to his
native country Cameroon (in spite of his studies and residence here in
Germany).

Mr. Yufanyi has instructed a lawyer in Berlin, to fight for the rights of
his daughter. Nevertheless, his warrant of arrest still stands as a result
of his refusal to pay the legal fees of his ex-wife.

To continue the support of Mr. Yufanyi Movuh, we now focus our protest
faxes and emails to the President of the District Court of Neukölln:
Wolfgang Schollmeier.

We thank all those who have protested against the arrest of the activists
Yufanyi Movuh. The protest has been effective – that is why he is not in
prison. We ask for further support of Mr. Yufanyi Movuh's father-daughter
campaign for his rights and the rights of his daughter.

Because we defend the rights of Mr. Yufanyi as a father, we call on all to
send mails and faxes to the executing officer, JVHS a. GV Johann Jöns, to
protest against the arrest of Yufanyi Movuh Mbolo.

Please send protest faxes and emails to:
the President of the District Court of Neukölln: Wolfgang Schollmeier with
a copy of the fax to: the_voice_berlin@gmx.de, The VOICE Berlin.

Phone: 030 / 90191-0
Fax: 030 / 90191-122

E-mail: poststelle@secuted by one of your court executors, Mr. Johann
Jöns, who has already summoned Mr. Yufanyi Movuh for the 02/12/2010, with
the aim of forcing an affidavit for Mr. Yufanyi Movuh.

I / we find it unacceptable that not only the custody of Mr. Yufanyi for
his daughter has been withdrawn, but also he is punished for not accepting
the racist decision of the District Court and the Court of Appeal. For
more than three years, his daughter has had little contact with him and
since July 2007 the mother of Mr. Yufanyi's daughter violated all
regulations of both courts by staying over two years in Mexico and now,
after her return, she does not want that he stays in real contact with his
daughter and that he assumes responsibility. The right of the child to
have contacts to both parents is clearly violated here, although the court
claims to have decided in the best interests of the child. Mr. Yufanyi was
granted a one day per week "right to visit" from his daughter. Since three
years, this possibility is undermined by the mother. He has already
instructed a lawyer from Berlin to fight for the rights of his daughter.
Nevertheless, he is being threatened with an arrest warrant for the
refusal to accept lawyer fees of his ex-wife.

I / we stand behind Mr. Yufanyi's decision. For the possibility to take
responsibilities as a father and to protect his daughter's right to have a
father, both need the opportunity to see each other whenever they want. As
a father, Mr. Yufanyi is an important person and reference for Anna Nulia
Yufanyi Movuh to convey to her the African part of her identity.

It is only logical, that Mr. Yufanyi cannot pay the costs of a trial that
denied these rights to him and his daughter.

If Mr. Yufanyi is arrested, I / we will do everything politically possible
to maintain his right as a father and the right of his daughter.

Therefore, I / we ask you not to allow the warrant of arrest under your
jurisdiction to be implemented and rather to advocate for its repeal and
for the rights of Mr. Yufanyi and his daughter.

Yours sincerely,

***

[creative-radio] Reginald Fessenden: The Forgotten Father of Broadcast Radio, East Bolton, Quebec, BROUGHT VOICE TO THE AIRWAVES

The Forgotten Father of Radio
REGINALD FESSENDEN BROUGHT VOICE TO THE AIRWAVES—ONLY TO LOSE CONTROL OF HIS
INVENTION
BY WILLIAM S. ZUILL

http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/it/2001/1/2001_1_40_print.shtml

[excerpt]

THE INVENTOR'S WIFE STOOD WITH HER ARMS SPREAD across the filing cabinets,
trying to cover the open drawers as three men struggled to remove the files
they contained. She knew she couldn't win, but she thought it might somehow
help her husband legally if the men had to use force. The men pulled her
away and started loading boxes. Then, with about a third of the files gone,
they began to relax their guard. She seized a moment when they all were
outside the office to slam the door and lock it. More time gained.

It was December 1910, and the woman who had been reduced to playing cat and
mouse with the movers was the wife of the man who had discovered how to
broadcast words. His name was Reginald Fessenden, and he deserves, as much
as anyone else, to be called the father of radio. Yet instead of making him
rich, Fessenden's inventive genius brought him mostly frustration.

For all the tumult of his later years, Fessenden enjoyed a peaceful
middle-class upbringing after his birth in East Bolton, Quebec, in 1866. The
boy's brilliance showed itself early, and in 1884 he became a master at
Bishop's College School, in Quebec, while attending Bishop's College there.
Before completing his degree, Fessenden took a job as headmaster (and only
teacher) at a small private school in Bermuda. While there he fell in love
with Helen Trott, the farmer's daughter he would later marry. (At the same
time, this writer's grandfather became engaged to Helen's elder sister
Eliza, whom he later married.)

Helen Trott went everywhere with the six-foot-tall Canadian, even when he
floated on his back in the sea, working out mathematical problems about
electricity. Years afterward, he would write: "One could miss a great deal
out of one's life and still be happy remembering those [carriage] drives
back after a dance, along the shore of Harrington Sound, and the moonlight,
the semi-tropical air and the smell of the jasmine flowers."

Fessenden's stay in Bermuda lasted two years. His family hoped he would
enter the church, like his father, an Anglican minister. Instead he decided
to go to New York City, armed with a few introductions, and try to either
find a job with the great Thomas Edison or make a living writing for
magazines. He was not yet married; Thaddeus Trott did not want a sonin-law
who admitted to holding the extraordinary notion that voices could be sent
great distances without wires.

New York was a disappointment. Fessenden sold only a few magazine articles
and repeatedly failed to get a job with Edison. Persistence finally paid off
in 1885, when he was given the post of assistant tester for the Edison
Machine Works as it lay electrical cables under New York's streets. During
his lunch hours he studied electrical theory and analytical mechanics and
worked out ways to do the testing faster. Before long he rose to inspecting
engineer.

[creative-radio] CKUT radio: Floodlines

* CKUT radio: Floodlines
author Jordan Flaherty on New Orleans community power

Listen to an interview with journalist and activist Jordan Flaherty on the
recently published book Floodlines on community power and resistance in New
Orleans post Katrina. Particularly this interview focuses on the struggle for
public housing, access to education and against police brutality in New
Orleans, while highlighting author Flaherty's critique on the hyper capitalist
reconstruction model that guided major government responses to disaster in New
Orleans.

"Floodlines is a firsthand account of community, culture, and resistance in New
Orleans in the years before and after Katrina. The book weaves the
interconnected stories of Mardi Gras Indians, Arab and Latino immigrants,
public housing residents, gay rappers, spoken word poets, victims of police
brutality, out of town volunteers, and grassroots activists. From post-Katrina
evacuee camps, to torture testimony at Angola Prison, to organizing with the
family members of the Jena Six, Floodlines tells the stories behind the
headlines, from an unforgettable time and place in history."

[creative-radio] The declaration of The VOICE Refugee Conference 2010 in Jena: Reinforced resistance against institutionalised racism

The declaration of The VOICE Refugee Conference 2010 in Jena:
Reinforcedresistance against institutionalised racism
http://thevoiceforum.org/node/1909

The Caravan - for the rights of refugees and migrants.
We are a nationwide network made up of refugees, migrants and antiracist
activists

Reinforced resistance against institutionalised racism

The Conference of The VOICE Refugee Forum with various refugee Initiatives
and the Caravan-for the rights of refugees and migrants took place in
Jena, Thuringen at the weekend.

The main aims were first, a discussion of the increasingly racist
"integration" debate on the part of German public officials and the wider
society against refugees, the so-called undocumented and illegal
immigrants in Germany. Second, was the exchange of experiences in the
struggles against Lager, food-packages, Residenzpflicht and racist
violence by state officials. Also, there was the issue of intensified
networking for further actions and the need for existing campaigns to be
strengthened.

Concerning the so called „integration"- debate, the plenary concluded that
the term „integration" is deceptively and manipulatively employed and
should rather be replaced by „colonial assimilation" as this is the closet
portrayal of the reality. The whole discussion documents the continuity of
a central-European culture determined by racism and barbaric migration
control.
From the position of refugees in Germany who face the continued
destruction of their home countries by Western intervention, the
murderous, militarized border control, the heartless deportation industry
and a well organised and coordinated isolation programme for refugees
epitomised by "Lagers" and Residenzpflicht", the debate is utterly
brainless and inherently psychotic.

Refugee lives are being lost here because we are being denied medical
treatment by the "sozialamt". Let them integrate the corpse. Refugees are
left in Lagers for years (and in some cases, no warm water or Heater even
in this winter) to waste for life. All over Bayern, refugees are
boycotting the age-long food-packages, many of which are expired food.
>From Mohlau to Meinersen, from Bayern to Baden-Württemberg, refugees have
waged the same resistance against inhuman conditions for months. They are
all saying the same thing: enough of this whole nonsense "integration"
debate. This resistance again shows the necessity of strongly organised
refugee communities as the only way of a consistent resistance.

The countless and brutal deaths of refugees at the hands of the police and
other state officers like the medical personnel who administered emetics
and yet remain unaccountable for their murders are true manifestations of
their "integration" design. We are not even talking about their deadly
machines at the hinterlands and borders of our home countries yet.

For us, who have been asserting our self-determination by relentlessly
fighting for our basic human rights, organising autonomously and refusing
to partake in, yield or compromise to this racist debate, we reiterate our
struggle here against racism and its dominant structures that has been
used to subject us to untold suffering and deny us our human dignity. We
reaffirm our struggle for our freedom and call again on the German
government to show some humility by practising what it preaches. There can
be neither seriousness nor sincerity in "integration" debate when a
section of the society is purposely and deliberately isolated, constructed
as hate objects and eternally punished for no reason.

Given our principled stand, we, as a self-organized network remain
determined to fight for our rights and human dignity. We reject the covert
and overt machinations of this racist "integration" debate and we call for
a broad solidarity from all progressive groups and well meaning
individuals to refuse the insult and deception that is this debate. We
reject their lies. We refuse to be fooled!

The conference resolved to send a delegation to visit and show solidarity
with our comrades in Bayern. Others to express our solidarity will join
the caravan and The VOICE activists and we call on all well meaning
individuals and groups to do the same.

As the activists from Brandenburg reported, the initiative of Abolishing
Residenzpflicht in the area has been nothing more than a fake and
ludicrous compromise between some civil society organisations and their
Government. Although the law has been slightly altered, refugees are still
being punished for exercising our right to freedom of movement.

When the Refugee Initiative Brandenburg fight for free movement, it is in
solidarity with all refugees and it attacks the whole Apartheid system.
When the hunger strikers in Bayern reject food-packages and the horrible
isolation camps, the rest of us cannot be silent. We all remain in
solidarity.

The coordinators of the conference will be participating in the
development of a nationwide network of refugee community initiatives in
the refugee camps in Germany through the lager-committee. We shall
elaborate on and encourage the documentation of related cases on the
situations and the abuses of refugees. These will be evaluated and
presented for the preparation of the planned Caravan Tribunal.

We are unanimous in our conviction that there is no way other than having
well organised refugee communities and a strong solidarity among each
other. In 2011, the growing network will be taking the struggles at the
nationwide level to a higher niveau in order to hit back against the
racist system of the German state.

[creative-radio] US Low Power Radio Bill Makes Huge Press Impact Nationwide with Hula Hoop Spectacle

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Prometheus Radio Project
Date: 15 December 2010 15:27
Subject: Low Power Radio Bill Makes Huge Press Impact Nationwide with Hula
Hoop Spectacle

The pressure continues to mount for the expansion of community radio
nationwide to churches, schools, and community groups nationwide.

After about 50 low power FM broadcasters and groups hoping to build low
power FM radio stations converged on the National Association of
Broadcasters -- telling them to stop making the Local Community Radio Act, a
bipartisan and widely loved bill that would expand community radio, jump
through hoops -- trade press, papers of record, and national media picked up
the trail.

*These stories show that the NAB looks increasingly foolish and isolated for
holding to its position in the face of such unified, bipartisan, and
widespread support for this issue*. One trade outlet, Radio Survivor, notes
that the NAB has received so many calls from LPFM supporters that they changed
their voicemail to accommodate the calls and
messages<http://prometheusradio.createsend3.com/t/y/l/axhky/nujjdidjh/r>
.

Read below and see attached for a press roundup: and remember, the time is
now to expand low power FM radio. Please support and work to pass Senate
Bill 592, the Local Community Radio Act, in this Congress.

Please contact info@prometheusradio.org if you have any questions or
concerns about this vital legislation, which would expand community radio to
save lives, put local voices of faith and family on the air, and strengthen
our towns and communities. *

*Community Radio Station Hopefuls Hula Hoop in Front of
the National Association of Broadcasters, asking CEO Gordon Smith:
Stop Making Low Power FM Radio Jump Through Hoops*!

*From Washington State to the Chesapeake Bay,
Teachers, Pastors, and Citizens Push Congress to Expand Low Power FM*

WASHINGTON, DC – Executives at the National Association of Broadcasters
(NAB), the lobby group representing large commercial broadcast stations
across the United States, were surprised to look out their windows today to
see a veritable circus of community radio supporters.

Dozens of people hula-hooped, juggled, and asked NAB chief Gordon Smith,
former Senator from Oregon, to stop blocking a bill that would expand access
to 100-watt low power FM (LPFM) noncommercial community radio stations
across the US – *the Local Community Radio Act, HR 1147 and SB 592.*

They cheered at the NAB, "Stop making us jump through hoops! Support low
power FM radio and the Local Community Radio Act!" * They also asked their
Congressional leaders to pass this widely loved and bipartisan bill before
the end of the 111th Congress*.

"Low power FM radio stations not only put local music, news, and political
debates on the FM dial, they saved lives after Hurricane Katrina because
they put up-to-the-minute local information on the air – and they are small
and flexible enough to keep running with a car battery when the power goes
out," said *Pete Tridish, an organizer with the Prometheus Radio Project* , a
nonprofit that supports low power FM radio stations nationwide. "*By passing
this bill today, Congress will be supporting thousands of constituent
organizations instead of bowing to one big broadcast lobby's wishes. * Gordon
Smith is silencing voices across the country by opposing the expansion of
community radio. So we're here to say: Gordon Smith, don't make a circus of
our democracy – stop making us jump through hoops; work with Congress to
pass this bill."

There are about 800 stations on the air across the US, but thousands of
other groups were unable to get licenses when LPFM was established in 2000.
The Local Community Radio Act, which would expand LPFM, sailed through the
House in 2009, and has broad bipartisan support in the Senate. *But news
reports <http://prometheusradio.createsend3.com/t/y/l/axhky/nujjdidjh/g>*
*showed that
NAB CEO and former Senator Gordon Smith is organizing secret Senate holds on
the bill to kill it* . The NAB claimed that they were working to compromise
or negotiate on expanding low power FM radio, but as of Monday the 13th,
they had rejected every offer that Senate sponsors and LPFM advocates have
brought before them.

"Over the 111th Congress, community radio advocates worked with Congress to
add 9 changes to the Local Community Radio Act, all suggested by LPFM
critics," continued Tridish. "But the NAB insists that every demand they've
made be met before they stop asking Senators to block passage of the
bill. They want to force the FCC to use an old, archaic way of finding
spots for LPFM stations that no other radio broadcasters are required to use
anymore for licensing. * If the FCC were forced to use this method of
licensing LPFM, there'd be no room for more LPFMs anywhere but unpopulated
areas and America's smallest towns."*

"Our station provides some of the only local service to Gillette when big
storms come through, and it puts great content on the air. That's why so
many in our town think it is such a vital resource. When I heard Senator
Barrasso (R-WY) was holding up a bill to expand community radio, I called
him up and explained to his office the work we do on our low power
FM," said *Pastor Joel Wright of the First Presbyterian Church of Gillette,
WY, licensee of KCOV-LP 95.7 FM* . "Senator Barrasso dropped his hold when
he learned how stations like ours serve seniors, faith communities, and
local leaders everywhere. If the NAB stops this hoop-la and tells the
Senate to stop blocking the bill, thousands of groups in cities and other
communities can get low power FM radio stations like we have here in
Gillette."

Hundreds of diverse groups support expanding low power FM radio nationwide,
including emergency responders, national civil rights and faith-based
organizations, and many others. They have waited years for the opportunity
to serve their communities, but the FCC has been unable to give out licenses
to them because Congress restricted LPFM. * The National Association of
Broadcasters has informed Senators that there are thousands of license slots
available across the US – without noting that most of those slots are in
unpopulated areas like deserts, news reports have
shown<http://prometheusradio.createsend3.com/t/y/l/axhky/nujjdidjh/w>
.*

"I work with poor people and workers in Baltimore. In this economy, it is
hard to get the word out about how to find better jobs and to make the
places we work dignified for everybody," said *Veronica Dorsey, of the
United Workers, a human rights organization in Baltimore. * "We make radio
pieces with lots of people, but can only distribute them online, and more
folks have access to the radio than the internet. Many folks work 2-3 jobs
and don't have time to come together with us or hear our stories online –
and a radio station would change that. We could speak to everyone and help
make Baltimore a better place. * That's why we're asking Congress to pass
the Local Community Radio Act, and why we're asking the National Association
of Broadcasters to stop making low power FM radio jump through hoops. Let's
pass this bill!"*

"Civil rights groups and community organizations have wanted low power FM
radio for years, and now the chance is almost here," said *Betty Yu,
coordinator of the Media Action Grassroots Networ* k, a national media
justice network with members in many cities that lost their chance to get
low power FM radio stations. "This circus is a celebration of what the
future of the radio dial can be. Our communities invite Gordon Smith and
NAB to stop making us jump through hoops, and to help communities serve
their neighbors with their own slice of the FM airwaves."

LPFMs have saved lives in powerful storms when big broadcasts lose power or
can't serve local communities in the eye of the storm. *WQRZ-LP in Bay St.
Louis, MS received awards from President Bush and other organizations post
Katrina in 2005, when one of the station operators swam across floodwaters
with fuel strapped to his back to keep his station on the air.* The
station proved so important that the Emergency Operations Center of Hancock
County set up shop with the LPFM to serve the community after Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. Bipartisan Senators and House members have expressed
support for the Local Community Radio Act as a vital way to expand emergency
service media across our nation.

"I'm Frank Bluestein from Germantown, Tennessee, one of the several large
suburban cities located just outside of Memphis. We have been fighting for
the past 10 years to persuade Congress to give communities like ours the
opportunity to establish a low power FM radio station. Our city wants to
provide community and civic groups, students of all ages, local artists and
others the power to communicate over their own LPFM channel," said * Frank
Bluestein, a media teacher and Executive Producer of Germantown Community
TV. *

"Equally important for Germantown, we need a dedicated communication outlet
that will serve the needs of our citizens in the event another tornado rips
through town or if any kind of natural disaster hits," continued
Bluestein. "In this day and age, emergency management is a must for a city
of our size and LPFM perfectly fits our needs. A low power FM radio station
can stay on the air even if the power goes out. Low power FM saved lives
during Katrina but strangely, the federal government is banning it from this
part of Tennessee. That is not fair or wise. We have the right to be as safe
as any other community in the US. * Congress should stand up for the
people and get this bill done, and Gordon Smith and the powers that be at
the NAB should stand aside and help us and other communities like ours get
Low Power FM radio. After 10 years, it is time!"*

"I'm a founder of WRYR-LP, 97.5 FM in Sherwood, Maryland," said *Mike Shay
of WRYR-LP, 97.5 FM in Sherwood, Maryland, on the Cheseapeake Bay. * "We
got one of the rare low power FM frequencies in 2000 and we've been on-air
for 8 years. Our town loves us because we put music, youth, political and
cultural leaders that would never be heard on the dial – and we've taught
dozens to become producers and makers of community media nationwide. *Now
is the time to expand LPFM! NAB, end this hoop-la, and Congress, bring
community radio to every city and town by passing Senate Bill 592."*
