[creative-radio] Re: Audacious and awesome new book about Youth Radio

GREAT FIND GEORGE

I'd be interested to see what others in the group think about this email from NFCB when I attempted to help them see that we could help them revive their youth radio program.

"Teaching young people how to do radio doesn't seem particularly relevant."

still makes me nutz after all these months I've held on to this email... read on...
___

Jeff--this is a very generous offer. But. I'm not sure this is much of a priority for us now. Teaching young people how to do radio doesn't seem particularly relevant. More relevant would be teaching adults how to do digital media. So what did you have in mind?

I can offer support as I believe youth education in radio is essential
to it's survival.

Please contact me if there is any way we can help, I would like to
have the next Youth Conference in Portland in 2011 - what should be
the goal for fundraising to make this happen?

Thank you for your time; excited to bring back this important element
of NFCB!

[creative-radio] Audacious and awesome new book about Youth Radio

RT @creative_radio: RT @NFCB: Audacious and awesome new book about Youth
Radio, our neighbors here in #Oakland! Recommended read!

http://ow.ly/2woV1

[excerpt, see embedded links at url]

Anyone who wants to launch or sustain a media project that engages young
people and amplifies their voices should read Drop That Knowledge, a new
book about Youth Radio written by Elisabeth Soep and Vivian Chavez. Lissa
Soep is a longtime Youth Radio staff member who has developed the
program's training framework and curricula. Vivian Chavez is a alumna of
Youth News, a forerunner to Youth Radio.

Youth Media International, as it is currently re-branding, is one of the
oldest and most successful youth media programs in the country. It's a
public media treasure. As founder Ellin O'Leary writes in the epilogue,
"Our mandate is to prepare young people to maintain and reinvent
journalism's best principles, so that they can deploy today's new tools
and platforms to speak truth to power, to cultivate credible soures, to
tell the story no one else is telling, and to create art and report on
emerging trends and culture."

At Youth Radio, adolescents, teens and young adults get the basics of
media production and much, much more: media literacy, leadership training,
critical thinking, group process, negotiation, peacemaking. They learn by
listening but mostly by doing. Once they develop their wings, some of
these producers soar, experimenting with nontraditional storytelling
techniques and providing fresh perspectives on issues that hit closest to
home: public education, neighborhood violence, teenage pregnancy, racial,
gender, national and sexual identity.

Drop That Knowledge explains the guiding philosophy of Youth Radio - the
model of "converged literacy" which is defined as "an ability to make and
understand boundary-crossing and convention breaking texts...knowing how
to draw and leverage public interest in the stories you want to
tell...[having the] imaginative resources to claim and exercise your right
to use media to promote justice." At Youth Radio, young people are
respected as the experts of their own experience, who not only find their
voice, but are empowered to use it responsibly, meaningfully, and
effectively.

I'm a longtime admirer of Youth Radio. I worked with some of its reporters
when I produced national news at Pacifica, and I visited the group's
Oakland headquarters for the first time earlier this year. Even so, I must
admit that I learned so much in the 200-plus pages of this book that I
didn't already know.

It's fascinating to read between the lines of some of Youth Radio's most
visible and successful stories that aired on NPR and PRI. How did these
pieces come together; what was the role of the reporter versus the editor;
how did youth and adults collaborate; what kind of dynamic ensued as harsh
truths are shared, or stereotypes are reinforced or debunked in a 4-minute
audio essay that would carry the burden of being The Voice of Youth on a
particular issue.

Late Barqad was on top of a three story building at KM5 intersection where

Al-Shabab has on Monday declared battle against the African Union troops

[creative-radio] Joint appeal by AMARC, PPF for setting up community radio stations in flood-hit Pakistan area

Joint appeal by AMARC, PPF for setting up community radio stations in
flood-hit Pakistan areas

http://ow.ly/2uanK

Kathmandu, Nepal, The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters
(AMARC) and the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) appeal to the Government
of Pakistan and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to
allow setting up of emergency community radio stations in areas that have
suffered from the current floods in Pakistan.

We call upon all concerned agencies in Pakistan to be flexible and
responsive to proposals for the establishment of community based
broadcasting mechanisms so that any information gap that exists among the
affected people is fulfilled and relief operations are made highly
effective. AMARC offers its knowledge and expertise in setting up
emergency broadcasting mechanisms, gathered from working around the world
in similar situations of natural disasters. The important role of
community radio in times of natural disaster for aiding relief operations
as well as for supporting rehabilitation and rebuilding has been proven
many times over. The recent examples of the positive power of community
radio was seen in the earthquakes of Haiti and Chile where AMARC played an
important role in facilitating the setting up of emergency broadcasting
stations.

It was not so long ago that community radios were brought to the forefront
of the efforts to provide relief and rehabilitate those affected by the
tsunami and floods in Indonesia. AMARC and PPF highly appreciate the
valuable work being carried out by radio stations in the flood affected
areas. There is a need to complement theses efforts by bridging the gaps
of information at the very local levels and among displaced peoples. This
can be effectively achieved by setting up emergency community radio
stations. AMARC, PPF and all other AMARC members in Pakistan offer sincere
condolences to the families of those that have perished in the floods in
Pakistan. We offer our solidarity and prayers to those that have suffered
huge emotional and material losses and extend our support to those that
are engaged in helping the affected.

[creative-radio] Film and Television Institute of India community radio beams over Pune

RT @creative_radio:
Film and Television Institute of India community radio beams over Pune
http://ow.ly/2sXgu

Press Trust of India, Updated: August 21, 2010 12:37 IST

Pune: If you have something to communicate that has a social relevance
and artistic value, think of going on air without the cumbersome
formalities of an official media broadcast.

This is the message being spread by the "Community Radio" station that has
been beaming from the campus of the Film and Television Institute of India
(FTII) here.

What started as social interactive sessions of the institute's students
has spread its wings with the FTII radio network launching daily radio
capsules on a variety of topics from June this year, inviting
participation from different segments of the city population which has
touched the five-million mark.

"Individual groups, schools, NGOs, budding and creative artistes are
invited to present their views and skills on FTII Community Radio where
formalities like an audition test are not required," said Sanjay
Chandekar, who heads the station.

[creative-radio] West Bengal: Aachuley’ Lepcha indigenous peoples Community Radio

RT @creative_radio: KALIMPONG: Aachuley' Lepcha #indigenous peoples
Community Radio
http://ow.ly/2sIE5
Lepcha tribes of the Darjeeling District, West Bengal

[excerpt]

FROM LEPCHA AACHULAY MAGAZINE

99% of the indigenous Lepcha tribes live in remote villages where the
basic human facilities are non-existent.The literary rate of the Lepcha
tribes is the lowest among the various communities in this region. Without
proper education, they are living in the 19th Century today.
Marginalization of the original indigenous Lepcha tribes in West Bengal
has a telling effect on their socio- economic and political conditions. No
wonder anthropologists, linguists and scholars are repeatedly saying that
the original indiegenous Lepcha tribes are a vanishing tribal race.

Bollywood and western musical and cultural craze have not spare the Lepcha
community either. Beautiful and meaningful folksongs, folk music and
traditional cultural heritage seem unfashionable to many today. India is
known throughout the world for her varieties of ancient, rich and unique
languages, literature, culture, traditions, customs etc. People of the
world marvel at her. It is very important that the Lepcha tribes do not
falter in their thoughts and action and must endeavour to conserve their
very rich and ancient cultural heritage in Mayel Lyang.

Useful and important Government information is hard to come by in this
region, especially in the remote villages where the Lepcha tribes reside.
Take the example of 'Census of India 2011'. Most people in the remote
villages are not aware of the importance of Indian Census 2011 and how
each individual or the head of family at least could be immense help to
the Goverment of India in compiling the most important and correct census
in order to plan the future development works.

There are hundreds of problems for the Lepcha community in this region.
Each problem has its own solution. Through the community radio, we fimly
believe, it will not only help to communicate among the Lepcha tribes
better and solves problems, it certainly can help us to preserve,
conserve, maintain and develop the very rich, ancient and unique Lepcha
language, literature and cultural heritage for posterity. A Lepcha
Community Radio Station is a must for the original indigenous Lepcha
tribes in Kalimpong, the heartland of the Lepchas.

The long awaited cherished dream, hope and aspiration of the original
indigenous Lepcha tribes of the Darjeeling District, West Bengal of a
quality radio communications in their own language, is going to be
materialized and fulfilled soon. 'Panos Institute South Asia' is here to
help the Lepcha community of West Bengal to establish their own community
radio in Kalimpong.

Gram Vaani, meaning voice-of-the-village, is an initiative to empower rural communities through participatory media.

http://gramvaani.org/

We aspire to build an eco-system of information production and consumption by bringing together rural communities, development NGOs, regional and local government agencies, and national and vernacular news agencies. Together, we can give a voice to the rural population that can be heard across the nation. One of our prime areas of expertise is in community radio.

The latest!

The GRINS box plus software, our flagship product for community radio stations is now available. GRINS is an open-source radio automation system especially designed for rural communities in developing regions, to help run their radio stations easily and efficiently.

Please read on for screenshots and other details. No other radio broadcast system supports such a seamless integration of radio and telephony!
